What is your main SHTF (Apocolypse) gun/plan?

Hahaha!!!!!! If we start using the 8 troop leading proceedures to write a 5 paragraph opord we can be more than just friends.

Yup. SMEAC. Or SMESC, depending on whether you come from the “Admin/Logistics” era or the “Service/Support” era. Good times.

Civilian considerations.... sheesh.

I'm a service/support era guy.

Sure but we need a WARNO, and I’ll bring the string to set up a tabletop.

FRAGO’s will follow as the situation dictates.

GOTWA - Cams your age is showing you old salt! Good post though.

Ya, actually surprised myself pulling that one out of my ass so quick. lol We had fantastic NCO’s bringing us up as young bucks, and surely have them to thank for kicking my ass so hard some of it actually stuck. Most of them Vietnam Veterans and Grenada Veterans.
Sometimes the simple things just work brother.

For this specific scenario, likely the Russian SKS. 10 Rd fixed box magazine. I have an ample supply of ammo on stripper clips for it.
If I am trying to shelter in, cover all the windows with Plywood, which I have here. Move the stored fuel into the basement to keep it from being stolen. Of course my house is wood, so it would be easy to burn me out.
If the SHTF is more localized I do have a truck and enclosed trailer so I can load up and bug out with essentials. SKS for that trip as well. And I have 3 locations I can bug out to, all within a tank of gas distance.
If the SHTF super local (in my house, say, I could no longer draw a paycheck) then homestead survival skills will apply. I heat with wood, I eat off my front yard (garden) and I have chickens for eggs. Also have a deep pantry and $ saved to keep the essential bills paid. I would hunt for small game and the occasional Bambi. The Stevens Favorite works perfect for game. Not ideal for whitetail but if it is the difference between being humane and feeding my family, the choice is obvious. That's assuming I can only have one gun. Shooting squirrel with a 35 Remington does not leave much squirrel.

When I was at Benning school for wayward boys my drill sergeants had their cib's from panama! Lol

And we we're still planning to block the ruskies in the fulda gap lol

Desert Storm kicked off when I was still in ait!

In fairness, I was still learning Russki order of battle at a transition course at Ft Huachucah. In 2000.

I do remember watching the OJ Simpson Bronco chase live out of the corner of my eye while I was in line at the barbershop in Basic Training. Drill Sergeant Lapasnick would have smoked us if he wasn’t so busy watching too.

Good times. Seems like a lifetime ago.

We watched DS on tv from the barracks with beer and pizza after shuffling on and off birds 6 different times saying it was go time. That one just wasn’t in the cards for us.

During a time of civil unrest I think any semi auto rifle would be a good choice. However for a long term off grid situation you can't do much better than a shotgun preferably a pump with a rifled barrel and a smooth bore barrel. Big game, small game, home defense. When the colonists lived in Massachusetts the weapon of choice was a fowler not a rifle I believe and they would have known more about off grid living than anyone alive today.

Hopefully we've learned a bit since, the days when their knowledge was relevant.

But then again school children were instructed to duck and cover under their school desks.
Actually that was pretty good advice as long as you weren't at ground zero. The blast wave could take 5-10 seconds to reach you if you are in a building at the periphery of the blast. Instead of the children going to a window after they saw a bright flash, the were taught to duck and cover to avoid glass fragments blowing into their faces.

There is not one gun for SHTF. Although if I had to choose only one to grab, it would be an AK or an AR.

Scoped rifle for when the barbarians are in the distance, and to put food on the table
Battle Rifle with a 30 round magazine for when the hordes are closer.
12 ga when inside the wire. Also for hunting depending on load.
Combat handgun when you can grab them by the collar.

It is also the list of must haves for a firearms collection. Once you can outfit everyone in your house who can fight with the above, then it's time to add novelty firearms. If you have household members that can not shoot, they better be able to reload.

As far as a plan, unless it means certain death, I am going no where. Work with family and some good neighbors, break out the chainsaws and drop some trees, make a stand. In a rural neighborhood, with a bit of forethought, you could hold off a battalion until they brought in some real heavy stuff. And even if they did, give me a week, 4 guys and 4 shovels and I could dig in pretty well.

But I am far more concerned about the next ice storm or hurricane than a zombie apocalypse.

Decide where you and your D&D friends and family are going to make your initial stand (IE: whose house) make that your rally point to meet up at. Have each member be responsible for a different sector of the house and stand firm on that. Make range cards for fields of fire from each sector and stick to them. Have one be the designated runner for ammo and first aid and whoever that is then needs to call out so another can also cover their sector of the house. Then designate a second for when that guy gets killed, etc down the line.

Check your surrounding areas outside and designate a fall back or roaming rally point for when your initial plan goes to shit. Everybody can meet up at that point and continue to fight on foot to whatever predesignated ORP (objective rally point) I know you’ve all thought about and pre-planned for.

Use a simple whistle to signal your friends, one blast for “rally on me as soon as you can, new plan” as dynamic situations are always evolving and changing, two blasts for evac any way you can we’re being burned out or overum and meet me at the first designated roaming rally point in 15mins. If they can’t make that point in the allotted time window they should automatically start making it the secondary rally point you’ve all plotted for, etc etc.

Set up a simple GOTWA card for whoever’s in charge of this cluster. So if you’re really missing someone from one of the rally points you’ll strike out to find them and leave a second in charge to stand fast at that RP.

Use this format:

G - where you’re going
O - others you’re taking with you
T - time you’re expected to return
W - what to do if you don’t return
A - actions to take upon contact (being shot at)

And for each of these roaming rally points you’ve pre-plotted, you’ll need to check the entire surrounding areas for known avenues of approach (streets/walking paths/etc) and plan to surveil and defend them the hardest) but not leave any other avenues of approach (heavily wooded or swamp areas) completely undefended, because it’s those routes that the professionals will be taking.

I could go on for days, but hopefully you get the point. There’s a whole lot more to this than just running around with a gun in one hand and a bottle of jack in the other if you actually want to survive it. Voodoo and wizards aside. Not a great plan in my opinion.

Just something to think about (the thought and training that some people actually put into these things to give themselves a better chance at surviving) and maybe motivate you into a long term actual plan of action to help you and your family get by. It is what it is. I’ll prolly be sitting home myself watching one last Pornhub episode or something before running out into the street naked with a rifle and jungle boots on. I’ve lived long enough already.

Why would you make a serious post in this thread?

I've got my SHTF guys. All good marksmen, all well equipped. We have high quality medics, coms (and one of the guys to fix them), an electrician, a guy who can drive and fix anything on wheels, several people trained in small group tactics, and more. If we can get together, it's on like Donkey Kong.

One thing I think most overlook is the cold. Can you heat your house by wood? I burn around 7 cords a year, I buy it by the log truck load and only cut and split what I need for the next season leaving it in uncut and log length makes it harder to steal, but I do de-bark the logs so the don't hold the water and rot.

I have a two car garage under the house, I used it mostly for a work shop but in a days time I can empty it and fill it with all my firewood for the year. Of course a guy with bottle gas and match is like most on her is my worst enemy.

Or a POST industrial world.
Most of your prepper types are preparing for some apocalyptic situation but are they preparing for how to live AFTER the apocolypse, AFTER civilization.

I have zero interest in surviving after an apocalypse, starting from scratch, propagating the human species and all that. I have lived a good life, long enough and don't need the headache. I'm good for a couple/few months of SHTF, grid/civil breakdown but apocalypse? Starting over after civilzation? That's what the last bullet is for (although I seriously can't imagine it being my last bullet).

Ok, this is fun. Something that I can reload easily and in bulk. I really would require at least two guns. Probably a 9mm semi because I can reload tons of it, and a bolt action. Probably a 308. Again readily available. I question my choice of the 9mm because there are just too many moving parts. I wonder if I should go with a 357 mag. Easy to load in bulk and can also load it with 38 special. Plus 357 mag has plenty of stopping power for almost everything.

The big challenge is food, power and water. Certainly in New England water is not a huge problem. But the food. Knowing how to hunt is important, and so would be foraging. How many of you pressure can food, hunt, pick mushrooms and forage? Then there are all the other random skills, like being able to build things, fix engines, sewing, etc. Oh, and I hope everyone here reloads. I consider that a must have skill. I would probably migrate west to areas that are sparsely populated and has good access to fish and game. I'm working on that already, hoping to retire out there and getting away from all the crazy here with the coastal states.

It is a really interesting discussion because these are all basic skills that was common 40 years ago. But today much of it has been lost. The average person probably can't even sew a tear in their pants, never mind find an edible mushroom. Heck, loss of phone use would be catastrophic for most people. It is actually very sad. Just think of how many people you know that are proud of the fact that they cannot cook? Almost like it is beneath them.

I recently started mushroom hunting, foraging and canning. Not because I am a prepper, but because I find it all fun to do. It just happens that it will come in handy when the SHTF :)

I sense the sarcasm due to the nature of the thread, but I didn’t think it was too serious was it? Some of these threads are entertaining. The OP is obviously a very young man, whose plan is to strap on a 70lb duffel bag and run 8 miles w/a shotgun in the hopes of commandeering a boat w/the help of some wizards and incense.

My point to the OP was that even with the simplest of tactics and a more thought out plan he may have a longer shelf life, I think he got the point and hopefully learned something. Hell, I’m old and cranky, OP’s younger than my kids, least I can do is share some knowledge before I forget it all, serious or not. I’m working towards my Yoda stages of life?

Excellent.

Because we live near the harbor, we suggest to anyone who asks to prepare for a Northeaster blizzard with coastal flooding. That’s the most likely, most threatening scenario and happens several times a year already. And it’s not difficult.

True. Hell, Morrisey floods over with even regular storms most of the time. A bad one would put the whole area under water there.

This. My preps, such as they are, are for a massive winter ice storm or the long overdue New England Hurricane of 202*. I want to be able to stay warm, clean and fed for 30 days while the sheep riot and heroes who are not me clean everything up.

The apocalypse stuff is for entertainment only.
