What is your main SHTF (Apocolypse) gun/plan?

True. Hell, Morrisey floods over with even regular storms most of the time. A bad one would put the whole area under water there.
After Hurricane Sandy put 14’ of water into lower Manhattan, we found an interactive tide map. The area we live in is the oldest settled part of mainland Boston and has not flooded for 288 years. We are actually about 40’ above median high tide. But a lot of the low areas near the Neponset River, South Boston, and especially Back Bay and East Cambridge are going to be flooded. Climate Ready Boston Map Explorer

They are working on plans to raise Morrissey three feet, not sure when it will happen. One of the reasons for the bike lanes is literally to push commuter traffic back onto the highway from the neighborhoods.

All that said, we keep our 11’ dinghy and a small outboard in the shed.....Our bug out boat.

Cold, wind-driven salt water is an incredibly destructive force.

I think it was just last year that the entire Seaport was under water for a few days during and after a storm. Crazy that developers poured hundreds of millions of dollars into that area with complete disregard for FEMA flood plane maps, not bothering to elevate or build proper sea walls at all. You had million dollar condos and AAA office space that was only accessible via gondola.

Southie would be underwater on the East side up to the junction of East/West Broadway and the entire Seaport. Northend/Aquarium area too. Part of Back Bay by the mouth of the Charles would also get hit.

I sense the sarcasm due to the nature of the thread, but I didn’t think it was too serious was it? Some of these threads are entertaining. The OP is obviously a very young man, whose plan is to strap on a 70lb duffel bag and run 8 miles w/a shotgun in the hopes of commandeering a boat w/the help of some wizards and incense.

My point to the OP was that even with the simplest of tactics and a more thought out plan he may have a longer shelf life, I think he got the point and hopefully learned something. Hell, I’m old and cranky, OP’s younger than my kids, least I can do is share some knowledge before I forget it all, serious or not. I’m working towards my Yoda stages of life?

I forgot <sarc> tags myself, sorry. I was really meaning to say, 'thank you for sharing so much' as most people are sarcastic in these threads because they don't want to share.

My plan is basically to rally and decide, and be ready to GTFO as soon as we decide that's what's best.

To the OP: I started at about your age. My advice to you if you're serious is to train, as much as you can. Get in physical shape, learn to shoot, learn some unarmed combat, and get some practice backpacking around where you live. Learn what works for you and what doesn't before SHTF.

Decide where you and your D&D friends and family are going to make your initial stand (IE: whose house) make that your rally point to meet up at. Have each member be responsible for a different sector of the house and stand firm on that. Make range cards for fields of fire from each sector and stick to them. Have one be the designated runner for ammo and first aid and whoever that is then needs to call out so another can also cover their sector of the house. Then designate a second for when that guy gets killed, etc down the line.

Check your surrounding areas outside and designate a fall back or roaming rally point for when your initial plan goes to shit. Everybody can meet up at that point and continue to fight on foot to whatever predesignated ORP (objective rally point) I know you’ve all thought about and pre-planned for.

Use a simple whistle to signal your friends, one blast for “rally on me as soon as you can, new plan” as dynamic situations are always evolving and changing, two blasts for evac any way you can we’re being burned out or overum and meet me at the first designated roaming rally point in 15mins. If they can’t make that point in the allotted time window they should automatically start making it the secondary rally point you’ve all plotted for, etc etc.

Set up a simple GOTWA card for whoever’s in charge of this cluster. So if you’re really missing someone from one of the rally points you’ll strike out to find them and leave a second in charge to stand fast at that RP.

Use this format:

G - where you’re going
O - others you’re taking with you
T - time you’re expected to return
W - what to do if you don’t return
A - actions to take upon contact (being shot at)

And for each of these roaming rally points you’ve pre-plotted, you’ll need to check the entire surrounding areas for known avenues of approach (streets/walking paths/etc) and plan to surveil and defend them the hardest) but not leave any other avenues of approach (heavily wooded or swamp areas) completely undefended, because it’s those routes that the professionals will be taking.

I could go on for days, but hopefully you get the point. There’s a whole lot more to this than just running around with a gun in one hand and a bottle of jack in the other if you actually want to survive it. Voodoo and wizards aside. Not a great plan in my opinion.

Just something to think about (the thought and training that some people actually put into these things to give themselves a better chance at surviving) and maybe motivate you into a long term actual plan of action to help you and your family get by. It is what it is. I’ll prolly be sitting home myself watching one last Pornhub episode or something before running out into the street naked with a rifle and jungle boots on. I’ve lived long enough already.

Ya, ok. Look, mate. I’ve watched The Walking Dead too. If they can survive 9 years, so can I!

Once again ignoring medical training and supplies.... Which come in handy even when the world is not ending if you are an outdoorsman, sailor, etc.

Wilderness medicine courses assume you are at least 6-8 hours from any help, so those are the courses to take. A bottle of antibiotics might be more important than the latest in tacticool.

Hey, you're right. Sorry. Please add medical training to that list.

Imma need some medical attention for that burn

Medical training is a funny one... A lot of the field trauma treatment is basically set-up to allow you to survive until you get to a higher level of care... but in SHTF/Zombies/EOTWAWKI I question whether that higher level of care exists in a realistic sense (before people set hospitals back up). My wife is in school to be an NP/Midwife... so I figure sutures, antibiotics, splinting... thats about all I can hope for unless one of us becomes a vascular/trauma surgeon, which aint happening. Stop the bleed training is important for example... but if you can't fix the vascular damage that limb is eventually coming off or the person will die. So figure out where you local surgeons live and plan to kidnap them and bring them with your to your new Utopia.

It would be interesting to see how it bears out. I think the closest you'd get would be post Katrina NOLA... so SHTF for a little while, until it all just calms back down and order is restored. Even on a national scale, ultimately it's in the interest of whoever can get power to restore order, for their own sake and everyone else's. I don't see civilization entirely crumbling. Even if we see a wipeout of 95% of the population with some crazy pandemic governments will fall into place pretty quickly, and enough smart people will be left to follow the countries existing framework. It's the little blank space between when SHTF and that happens that you need to worry about... and at that time it's probably about protecting your property, although there will ultimately be plenty to go around in all the fantasies so it's really about circling the wagons until the storm blows over.

The existing legal framework for dying intestate with no heirs results in everything escheating to the state anyway, so if the state doesn't exist, and everyone is gone, it seems to follow that the values of our society says their shit is fair game. I'm surviving long enough to get a nicer house and some new cars.

No worries, I knew you weren’t meaning it disrespectfully. Just the circle of life man, passing some on while I can to the youngins. Who knows, maybe some day one of the young folks I’ve taught and trained will be the one to pull me out of a bad spot somewhere. Karma is real.

There is not one gun for SHTF. Although if I had to choose only one to grab, it would be an AK or an AR.

Scoped rifle for when the barbarians are in the distance, and to put food on the table
Battle Rifle with a 30 round magazine for when the hordes are closer.
12 ga when inside the wire. Also for hunting depending on load.
Combat handgun when you can grab them by the collar.

It is also the list of must haves for a firearms collection. Once you can outfit everyone in your house who can fight with the above, then it's time to add novelty firearms. If you have household members that can not shoot, they better be able to reload.

As far as a plan, unless it means certain death, I am going no where. Work with family and some good neighbors, break out the chainsaws and drop some trees, make a stand. In a rural neighborhood, with a bit of forethought, you could hold off a battalion until they brought in some real heavy stuff. And even if they did, give me a week, 4 guys and 4 shovels and I could dig in pretty well.

But I am far more concerned about the next ice storm or hurricane than a zombie apocalypse.

After further consideration... Imma go with my 40.

40...or 45?

Have you watched a zombie movie since 1970?

Yeah, I just watched this zombie flick where the kid from Xmen abducted this smokin blond chick and took her to his plane at the airport. He was chowing her boyfriend's brain and was able to see his memories.
It was a Romeo and Juliet thing.

Ahhh true love.

I've seen that too, the guy from Hot Tub Time Machine was in it. The zombies redeveloped speech etc.

Bug in, not out, except for the fact that liberal slime from the city are coming to the burbs in droves to take yer stuff. After a week or two of repelling Liz Warren's minions, I should be able to relax with my canned food, pasta, stored water, wood heat, and bucket o' toilet. I'll protect my Dinty Moore beef stew and toilet paper, and yes I did mention them both in one breath for a reason, with my SKS, and my new SA XD .45 in my pants.

Alt plan: carry a bunch of crap north to family homestead in the boondocks, and hope liberal leeches, glue sniffers, felons, psychologists, and other undesirables can't make it that far.

Holy crap this thread got some traction.

I’m in the lay low and keep quiet until it all blows over, group. Our house/rental has 2 50 gallon water heaters, so there’s 100 gallons of stored water right there. Food on hand for at least 30 days at sll times. Stocked first aid kits in multiple locations.

Ya’ll go have fun!

The Ruger 10/22 I sighted in today should be enough to keep my fellow suburbanites at bay without raising too much alarm. I’m on a hill surrounded by unarmed hockey moms. You’ll have to get through them to get to me.

Who tied you down and made you watch that?

I know what you mean about the TP. When I tried eating the Mountain House freeze dried spaghetti, it went through me like panzers through Belgium.
