Most overrated handgun?

You're all wrong. Although I thought of the FN 5.7 and the Desert Eagle too.

This was the introduction of the most overrated gun:

M: You’ll carry the Walther.....unless of course you’d prefer to go back to standard intelligence duties.

BOND: No sir, I would not.

M: Then from now on you carry a different gun, show him armorer.

MAJOR BOOTHROYD: (shows James the new pistol) Walther PPK 7.65 millimeter with a delivery like a brick through a plate-glass window, it takes a Brausch silencer with very little reduction in muzzle velocity...the American CIA swear by them.

[shocked]

all this hate for the 1911??? is this northeastshooters or glocktalk? [laugh][rofl]

i'll agree that paying $xxx.xx PLUS for an Ed Brown or Kimber in MA definatley makes them over rated. but my S&W runs everything to date...

my personal pick would be HKs. [devil2] in MA. the safety is horribly placed and you can get a nice $600 piece for upwards of $1k [laugh]

next would be 3rd Gen Glocks and newer glocks (i own two and get for decent prices)

I'll agree with disco here 100%.

1911 are "garage queens" ::puts on flak jacket::

While I'll be first to say the design is flawed I've sent more rounds through my 1911s than all my other handguns and calibers combined, so mine certainly don't stay in the garage. I have one right now that is so fouled up with gunk I'm surprised the slide still moves back and forth on it. (it needs a cleaning, badly).

So while they're pieces of crap in some ways, they certainly don't stay in the garage. [laugh]

How many rounds through it? My SW 1911 is all sorts of sloppy after 40K rounds. Accuracy has fallen off. Parts needed to be replaced, trigger jobs redone. My customs still lock up almost as tight as they day I got them and accuracy is great. 2lb trigger is still a good as day 1

Thats the difference between good and great 1911s

That's the difference between any custom made product and the mass produced version.

What do you think is the most overrated handgun model?
I found this question on another board and I thought I post it here

as far as this forum is concerned.......Smith & Wesson M&P
(with or without "Trigger Job" ,all calibers)

To me, that giant HK ninja weapon. Lots of money for a little cool factor. [rolleyes]

While I would never want to have to carry one....I must say it is a sweet shooter. But yes....it is pretty highly overrated. The 5-7 is up there too (g-d counterstrike fanboys)

Anything German.
Kind of like their cars.

Overpriced and overrated
I'll drive German cars all day long. Better than any Japanese pos I've ever been in (and 99% of American vehicles too!) and that coming from a Ford Truck owner.
er, how about ANYTHING made by Taurus?
False.

I have a Taurus 24/7 pro compact and a PT1911 that are both phenomenal handguns.

I'm going with another vote for the FN Five-seveN

Another satisfied Taurus customer... [laugh]

What are your experiances with glocks and .45 GAP?

Don't know about Glocks, but when I was at Horton we had a few XDs still left in stock in .45 GAP. We couldn't GIVE them away. Usual response was a laugh and a "You're kidding, right?"

Kind of interesting to see how the people who have been around guns 100X longer then me feel. I always thought the run of the mill S&W 1911 was thought to be a reliable shooter.

I'll start another thread if you post what you think is overrated can you post what you think is a really good/reliable handgun?

I'm new to the world of this stuff so I am just curious to what you guys (who have been in the world of firearms) think? Your experience is my shortcut to saving lots of $$$.

There are a lot of people on NES that don't like .45 GAP, .357 SIG, etc...

I was just curious about the round. I know a lot of people shit talk it. I read an article about it today that praised the round, and then remember a conversation with drgrant about how bad it was. I have noticed recently that 45 GAP ammo in non MA states has become more common..

I must have shot the only 1911s in the world that never had any problems. I've shot thousands of rounds through colts and SW, and never had any issues.

It's not that they're buggy, it's that the design is old. It doesn't take into account the same things or make the same assumptions that a modern design does. They need to be made right and cared for right, which today, really makes them a specialists or an aficionado's weapon. If you expect to just unbox and shoot a production 1911 forever, the chances of a problem are higher than with a modern design.

Add to that the prevalence of badly made ones, the old-school capacity and heavy weight, and I understand why they could be seen as overrated. Custom 1911s are amazing beyond reasonable measure, however, and those who post "1911" (more than, jeez, something like the Judge) might want to shoot a Bezos Custom sometime.

I agree that alot of the love for the 1911 platform is irrational, though. It's become a cult. But it's an awesome cult.

Not in specific defense of the 1911 but doesnt everything need manual maintenance? Computers are a prime example, no more filing cabinets but now we have a ton of computer techs because of the software bugs.

Does a 1911 have to be cleaned/maintained/overhauled anymore then other pistols? In this day and age with the new materials they are using I’d assume they would be more reliable then they ever were in the past.

Not in my experience. They are perhaps more likely to have problems out of the box (e.g., poorly tensioned extractors) than more modern designs, but once fixed are generally pretty reliable if they are from a high quality manufacturer.

1911s built during WWII were built with the US Army's QA inspectors in attendance, which is more than can be said of most commercial handgun manufacturers today.

Second, what new materials? Most 1911s are still steel, and we made some pretty darn good steel during WWII.
