WORCESTER— A snowy, blustery day posed no deterrent to those anxious to get unwanted firearms out of the house and into the hands of the Police Department at yesterday’s final day of the Goods for Guns program at the police headquarters, 911 Lincoln Square.

Dr. Michael Hirsh, chief of pediatric surgery at UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center, said 56 firearms were turned in for gift certificates. On Dec. 6, 69 weapons were turned in at the Department of Public Health offices at 25 Meade St.

He said 15 rifles were turned in and 41 handguns, of which 10 were semiautomatic.


“The majority were of the type of handguns that we see most commonly causing injury to another or suicide, so we were very happy with today’s results,” Dr. Hirsh said.

Typically, the surgeon said, these are the guns most likely found around the house that are not stored properly or safely and are picked up by burglars or children.

Dr. Hirsh said the city’s police deserve credit in their continuing effort to make Worcester the safest city in Massachusetts.

“They have been a great partner in this program because they realize this is one less circulating population of weapons that can fall into the wrong hands. This also represents fewer guns that might be used in suicides if they were to be readily accessible,” he said.

Since it was established seven years ago, the gun buyback program has taken in more than 1,500 firearms. The weapons turned over to Worcester police are destroyed. ]

I have had the second response from people and I always respond 'your *so and so* seems to think its fine.'

The best part is that I say it without sarcasm or snapping that the sound of my voice can carry some truth to the matter. I know I got to them when I get accosted by the guy for implying they like guys (which has happened a couple of times).

This is the current Liberal quip to which I reply, do you think people from other countries are concerned about what Americans think of their elected officials? Do people in France vote for certain candidates to please the Americans? Of course not! We vote for our politicians to do right by us. They vote for people to do right by them. In an ideal world both agendas would be the same but in the world we live in each country must maintain its own interests.
