Talk me out of moving back to Massachusetts

You could always ask them "nicely" if they would move the company to NH/Maine for you...Is it the kind of job where your could work from home?? maybe 50-75% of the time..

Unless your dream job would allow you to make millions, keep your home in ME, rent a place in MA, and retire in 5 years, don't do it. It simply isn't worth it.

Provided your "dream job" includes a very significant salary increase, what about the idea of a small apt closer to work? Also, a lot of workplaces these days offer flexible work options such as telecommuting.

You might be able to get an apartment for a couple of days a week then work the rest from home?

Have you consider the commuter rail from Maine? It gives you time to catch up on reading and any work that you might do at home.

Here is one more question for you. You have a chance at YOUR dream job, what about your wife and a future job of hers.
When momma isnt happy no one is happy.[wink] Just sayin'

Gun laws ain't everything. If the money/job prospect is good take it. ME doesn't strike me as lacking moonbattery and tax BS.

A friend of mine lives in the Lakes Region and rents a small place in Bedford during the week. He keeps his residency in NH but has the apartment M-F to avoid a killer commute.

Move to NH... No state tax, no income tax (though you'll be working in mass... d'oh), and you'll be closer to work.

But remember this, once you move to mass, your passport back north will not be valid. They'll stop you at the NH border and tell you to turn around. :p
Yeah, right. 9 times out of 10, the people saying this have moved to NH in the last five years.

Living in NH and working in MA combines NH real estate taxes with MA income taxes: the only thing is that might still be less than the tax burden theOP is absorbing in Maine.

So I moved out of MA five years ago up to Maine, and I love it here.

Problem is, I was offered a dream job at a dream organization..... in East Boston. Right now, it would be a 2 hour + commute one way. I don't even like driving, and that is way too much time away from family, and too sedentary a lifestyle, and too stressful.

Even Kittery is kinda far away, though NH isn't bad, but my wife would have to find the "perfect town".

Talk me out of looking in MA, I'm getting tempted!
What town do you live in ME? Do you have kids in school? What kind of outdoor activities do you like?

You spend roughly 35% of your waking hours at work, so having a job you want is worth considering. Commuting is not fun, and consumes time and income, so that wouldn't be my top choice.

We're raising our kids in South Boston, but I'm not sure I'd want to do so in East Boston or even Winthrop: others disagree, I'm sure. Depends on whether you want to be on the ocean, or not.

That is the killer. I reverse commute (live in the city, work out of it) and when I see the traffic going in and hear about 1-3 hour commutes each way, every day of the week, it makes me sick to think about that.

I'm not sure about 93 from NH in the commuting direction. You could always wake up really early and leave work before 5 if the job is flexible enough...

My next dream job....the one that gets me and my wife as far from this POS, socialist, corrupt, entitled state as we can!!! I was born and raised here....and I can say without a doubt this state sucks and is only getting worse. Pretty soon this will be the old East Berlin of North America. When I leave, I'm dropping my drawers on the other side of the state line and telling the whole government here to kiss my a$$.

Go for the dream job and move to Mass.. It's no worse here than anywhere else. You can always move back if the job doesn't work out.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that.

You can always move back if the job doesn't work out.
Easier said than done. Jobs in ME are hard to come by, and once you have a family and a house, moving becomes time consuming, difficult, and expensive. When I was 22, single, and had few possessions, moving was simple and cheap. No longer.

If you truly love firearms and want to carry without hassle, CT, Mass, RI, NY, NJ, MD, CA, HI and Illlinois are not options..in my mind that is...and maybe Wisconsin for not having CC..yet....

I think there's a condo available in Manchester-by-the-Sea.

but seriously, it depends on the job and money. If you can bank some coin and/or advance your career and then move back to Maine at some point it would be worth it in my opinion.

I am, as I regularly drive from Boston to our office in Manchvegas. 52.5 miles in 48 minutes. Going home takes 55.

If there is so much as a rain drop in the air, traffic is bumper-to-bumper stop-and-go from Exit 2 in NH all the way to Boston. And they moved to NH for "Quality of Life?"[rofl]

its a tough call dude. the perfect (dream) job might make it worthwhile for you. you'll save money in some areas, but be prepared for the proverbial butt**** for real estate anywhere near boston.

hell, move to saugus! very green town, taxes arent terrible, car insurance isnt too bad (compared to revere anyways), tons of places to shop/eat right on rt.1, and you'd be <20min from eastie on almost any given day.

unfortunately, there arent any logging pit down here to go shooting in (ha!).

Dream jobs never last, and money isn't everything. If you are happy in Maine and doing well financially, you may want to rethink this.

Thanks for the advice guys, I appreciate it. :)

Commuter rail is an option I guess, but then it would be 20 minutes into portland, 2.5 hour train ride, then 30 minutes on the T from N station to Maverick.

My current job, even though it pays the same, is probably going to disappear in a few months. I dunno, it's a director level position, and you usually don't land those kind of spots without having been a director somewhere else for years.

Do you have any potential up there or in NH? We are all jealous of you free staters and don't want you to find out how bad it is here. Wait....misery loves company....come on down!!!! LOL

Lived in NH five years. Not jealous. Grass is always greener. Some people make the best of where they live, but a lot of people here seem to concentrate on making the worst.

I know people who have moved from Southern Maine to the mid-coast because "Southern Maine isn't Maine anymore" and others who have moved from the Mid-Coast to Downeast. But they brought their jobs with them: the Maine economy is not strong.

Personally, I won't move for a job. You could offer me a $1,000,000 a year job, but I wouldn't take it if it meant moving (even to NH!). I'd suck it up for a year or two and commute or get a cheap apartment.
I don't make a heck of a lot of money, but I am my own boss, live well, have a decent roof over my head, have great friends, and can own any gun I want.

What's the dream job, anyway? Breast inspector at a strip club?
