Pulled over while carrying......interesting experience

FWIW the only time I was ever stopped was an exit before the Marlboro show one day by a state trooper. He clocked me at 80+, pulled me over, started walking up to my truck, looked, and noticed numerous gun decals on the rear cap window including the "CAUTION STAY 100 METERS BACK OR YOU WILL BE SHOT" one, then slowly approached with his back against the truck, peered into the window with a smirk and asked for my license and registration.

I was never asked about guns or if I was carrying. After my info was checked and he came back to the truck, the only question was if I know why he pulled me over to which I replied "I was driving too fast like an ******* and trying to hurry up and get to Marlboro"
His reply: "What's in Marlboro?"
Me: "Gun show"
Him: "Oh. Well, here's a ticket. I wrote you doing 66 in a 65mph zone. Have fun at the gun show"

Mine's in condition 3 so no worries there. I'd tell the cop that too.

To be honest the reason I don't carry is this:
Probability of having to defend myself with a firearm in the towns in which I live and work and on the roads in between = zero.
Probability of some weird shit happening as a result of carrying = greater than zero.

I understand this calculation will be different for other people.
I think you need more range time...

Wow....
I understand the risk . I also go to places that I cant bring a weapon to shows etc.
I don't limit what I do if I can bring my gun with me or not. I've read plenty of people say they won't go to Boston period . I used to take the train in at 13 years old and skate board in bad areas.

Heck I've been known to get a buzz on at my bon fires. Stumble to the sonics after midnight to get food alone with out carrying ... Then fall a sleep in a rocking chair by the fire.
If I wake up and get hungry I'm not carrying a gun to make a sandwich, I'll grab a smoke and make a sandwich . just my choice.
I feel the same way about any one if you carry 24/7 night and day good for you . If you carry just when your going to shirty areas good for you too.

I've been stabbed at a skate park before . Shit kicked out of me by cops. I know the risks.

It's my time it's my time I just don't give a shit I guess. That said I do carry most of the time.

Condition 4? How about Condition FR. No round in chamber, slide locked back and empty mag back at home. It may be a steel rock, but at least you'll never have an ND. [laugh]

I prefer condition 5. Trigger lock installed, pistol locked in safe, ammunition locked up at the other end of the house.

When I encounter a BG at the milkshake drive through I'll just ask him if he minds waiting 20 minutes while I run home.

I guess I just realized I don't live in fear.

The instant on fad is done. Most cops just sit with it on. Radar detectors work great again. Also, GPS based units like the Escort 9500 allow you to mark locations with door openers so that you can eliminate most false alarms on any route you drive regularly. It won't block out a real radar because it counts the number of signals, and any additional will trigger an alert.

They do not however work on the interstates in CT. There the cops use laser almost exclusively. With laser, all the detector does is tell you in advance that you are going to get pulled over.

I/O is very much alive in CT :)

No fear Troll, just power, the power of controlling my own destiny if and only if needed.

So in all the other 49 states (57 if you're Obama) people have no problem obeying flag men. Only in this shithole do they ignore them.

No they found out a few local cops were the ones causing the trouble. If your gonna live in that state follow the news.

Now I carry in the shower. Thanks. +p cocked and locked. I hope I get jumped in there, because I'll already have the shower curtain to wrap the body in while I scan for additional meth threats.

Throw some Sudafed into the far corner of the bathroom - it'll occupy those tweakers for the precious few seconds you need to get better tactical positioning, split their attention, and task saturate them trying to decide kill naked guy or cook meth.

I like how you party.

I understand the cops view trust no one especialy someone with a gun. You could have just shot your wife, and are taking your kids on a nut ride. That said he should have called back up if he thought you were dangerous. He let you talk him out of it,and that was stupid on his part. You handled yourself very well there are many cops out there that the only guns they know how to handle are the ones they are trained on.

The cop knew about the LTC and all of his guns before he got out of his cruiser the first time.

I definitely considered this, but he really just caught a glimpse of the top "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" banner. Next time I'll just make sure my wallet is facing the other way.

Actually I asked him about that. He claimed that unless it was issued by the town or there was something outstanding from the State Police that it would not be instantly visible.

ETA: This happened in Natick.
From what I recall being discussed here before, unless Natick has none or the most bass-ackwards terminals in their cruisers LTC status shows up as a line item on the main screen when they run the plate and if it is registered to the person who has the LTC. They can drill down on that to see the fa-10 generated list.

As others have mentioned, knowing a person has an LTC should be mind-easing, not a cause for apprehension. I wonder if there are ANY stats on how many cops in MA have ever been shot by an LTC holder at a traffic stop. Ever.

Take my gun out of its holster while I'm seated and hand it to him? How, with muzzle pointed at my own head as I hand him an unfamiliar 1911 in Condition 0? Fat ****ing chance. I'd rather be tasered and let them take it from my body than look down the barrel of my own gun.

Seriously, they guy is ASKING someone to put his hand on his weapon's grip and pull his weapon out while the cop's gun is holstered? IS he ****ing retarded? He'd be dead three times over before he returned fire.

What a complete, absolute ****ing moron.

Does this differ from town to town, Obie? I have had several guys tell me that the info comes up when you run a DL and others have said that it doesn't.

It's certainly could. I suppose it depends how you have your CJIS client set up. Otherwise, you have to log into CJISweb and look it up. For licenses where my department is the issuing authority they're a bit easier to see, as the licenses will also show up on out in-house.

But I don't even have CJISweb in the cruiser, and I certainly can't lookup FA-10 records without contacting dispatch and waiting 10 minutes.

"What have I done that has raised your suspicion sir?"
"Am I suspected of being a felon?"

And in response to the quoted post, mountains of case law say you're wrong.

Here's a response you could consider using when you need to say, "No" to a cops request/demand/instructions:

"My lawyer would shoot me if I did that. I'm more afraid of her than I am of you."

You're not defying him, just following orders. A little humor never hurts in these situations.

Officer: I was trained in situations like this to take the gun so that while I'm writing a ticket I don't get a bullet in the head.
Weird thing to say.
Me: I'm sorry but I don't feel comfortable given the circumstances to reach for my firearm. I'm also a certified instructor if that makes you feel any better. (it shouldn't, and I'm not sure that it did)
I won't criticize your action, but let's hope what the cop no doubt sees as your failure to obey was not submitted to the issuing authority of your LTC.

I dont fault anyone on their decisions whether to carry or not. Do what you want, when you want concerning carrying. I dont understand when people condemn others for deciding they dont want to carry sometimes like it has some voodoo effect on them.

Frankly I would be surprised. The stop overall was really quite civil. I stated very calmly that I was not comfortable reaching for & drawing my firearm given the circumstances and he did not press the issue.

I got pulled over while carrying late this afternoon (amazingly this is the first time) and I had a sort of interesting experience.

The officer approached the window and did the usual license/registration request, at which point I inquired as to the reason for the stop. Apparently my inspection was expired (stupid MA). After I handed over my registration he asked me if there were any guns/weapons in the vehicle. I calmly responded that I have my ltc and was in fact carrying. The following is a partially abridged (& paraphrased) transcript of what followed.

Officer: What are you carrying? Do you usually carry?
Me: Ruger LCR under my left arm. Yes, I almost always carry.
Officer: I'd like you to slowly and carefully hand me the firearm.
Me: Is there a specific reason?
Officer: I was trained in situations like this to take the gun so that while I'm writing a ticket I don't get a bullet in the head.
Me: I'm sorry but I don't feel comfortable given the circumstances to reach for my firearm. I'm also a certified instructor if that makes you feel any better. (it shouldn't, and I'm not sure that it did)
Officer: Please stay in the car.

After a long wait...

Officer: I'm giving you a warning for the expired inspection. It would have been a lot faster if you had given me the firearm. That way I could simply do my paperwork instead of having to write a line and look up, write a line and look up, etc. I saw the top of your LTC when you were getting your license, which is why I asked. I'm not trying to infringe on any rights; I carry every day.
Me: I understand and appreciate how you feel, but I just didn't feel that there was any safe way for me to hand the gun over.

And that was pretty much it. The overall tone was short of friendly but mutually courteous, and I appreciate that he stated his desire not to infringe. That being said, I find it generally disheartening that he says he was trained to disarm a law abiding citizen in order to avoid "getting a bullet in the head". I have nothing but respect for the job that police officers do, but that made me sad.

Oh yeah, and my kids were in the back seat. I had to explain why the nice officer felt the need to say that he didn't want a bullet to the head.

Not a bad experience overall I suppose (hey, only a warning!). It was just a strange mix for me; he was very non-confrontational with his tone but at the same time managed to make me feel like he sees a licensed carrier as an inherent unknown/threat.

Just thought I'd share. That is all.

Excellent response. Calm clear and all legal.

Any cop that even begins to approach dink level gets the 5th. That one is still intact isn't it?

Oh trust me.......hte 5th is in tact still.......aint no way in friggin hell the legislators in thid s country will **** with the 5th!

Me? I always wear my seatbelt, but only in condition 4. That is: slung over my shoulder but not buckled. I'm too good a driver to get into an accident so this works well for me. Wait...........am I in the wrong thread again?

You need to hide your LTC in your wallet better. Do you show others your hand when playing cards? Lol.
