Pistol Red Dot Transition Advice

Irons on a dot gun are like tits on a bull

I don't entirely agree with you.

I don't have iron sights of any type on my competition dot guns. They're potentially distracting, and I don't need them. Worst thing that can happen in competition is that I fail and my friends laugh at me. Been there, done that, probably do it again.

I have one carry gun that has a dot. The optic itself is a Trijicon RMR, the best, most durable optic that I could find. If I'm in a situation where I NEED that gun, I need it to be usable. I replace the battery yearly, and I check the optic before I leave the house with it.

But, when things go wrong, they do so unexpectedly, and often in the worst possible way. If I NEED that gun, I need it - there's no time to make any kind of adjustment to it, or grab another one. So, worst case - I smash the optic, or it picks that moment to fail. I've got a front sight on that gun to give me some reference. Very much "belt and suspenders".
