Spotted a large one in the woods behind my house today. Now it looks like I'll have to keep an eye or or escort my little dog when she goes out in the yard.

I keep my 1911 close by all the times but wonder if my .22 Marlin rifle would be a better "just in case" tool. I've got lots of acres so shooting on my property isn't a problem, but I still don't want to go overboard on the power.

I suspect a .22 would either drop it or make it stay outta my way.

What do you think?

Your AR is perfect...accurate and to the point. No question about the outcome. And, not a whole lot louder than your .45. You don't want to wound it, that's cruel, and dangerous.

Plenty of people hunt coyote with .22's, but your shot placement will be critical - otherwise, you may have a wounded coyote on your hands....Use your AR with a Hornady V-Max, or a Remington CoreLokt...

+1, and a wounded predator is more likely to go for easy prey, like your dog. Just make sure you kill it.

Why would anyone want to 'just stop' a Coyote?

Isn't that similar to just stopping a rat?

Coyote's are vermin in a developed area and serve no purpose other than to eat pets and threaten the safety of small children. They're a long way from domesticated dogs.

My opinion...if they're in your neighborhood and you can kill it...kill it, and save yourself or a neighbor some grief.

.

I'd go with a higher powered rifle. You can stop a lot of animals with a .22 lr. But, I'd bet that you'd be more likely to wound it. A .223 and up would be a better choice. Even a lever rifle chambered in a round like a .357 or 45 colt would be a better choice for some yotes.

Use a shotgun to make sure the job is done right. Heavy-Shot makes a great load called "Dead Coyote", and trust me, they live up to their name.

HEVI-Shot® Dead Coyote loads provide 50 plus .20 cal Pellets "T" Shots in every load that provides lethal knockdown power at 70 plus yards!

It would depend on what my choices to shoot it with were. What is in the gun safe? I'd choose a shotgun over a .22 but if I had other choices I'd probably opt for something else.

If you have seen one you can bet that there is a lot more. Sounds like a good excuse to buy a nice lever rifle![grin]

What he said. Waste him with extreme prejudice.

Dennis, it doesn't matter what you use to hunt the yote. If it's anything like the ones I go after, you'll never see it once you have a gun in your hand!!! LOL

You're probably right !

That's the dilemma, if I had a limited number to chose from, my choice would be easy. About the only thing I can't use, because I don't have one, is a 500mag!

Pretty sure you just found another reason to buy a new gun. But i've seen people take coyotes with .22s, as they say placement is key. Also if you dont want to buy a new gun and already have and AR use that. also in your location under your avatar you listed plymouth, look into discharging of a firearm. someplaces and some people frown upon things like that.

As I said, I've got plenty of firepower, just picking the right one without too much overkill is the issue.

My Location: Sometimes Plymouth, sometimes next door. Depends on the time of day.

I work in Plymouth, don't live there. Shooting in my area of town is not an issue.

Bingo

If you have a lever action rifle that will shoot your .45 round I would say that would be perfect.

If you can shoot and kill that Coyote with a 1911 you should get your own show on the Outdoor Network.
