Coyote

If you have a lever action rifle that will shoot your .45 round I would say that would be perfect.

If you can shoot and kill that Coyote with a 1911 you should get your own show on the Outdoor Network.

Sounds like a good deal to me![banana]
Should I video the kill?
Whats the pay like?
Will I get to travel?[smile]

Oh, you meant the op.[sad]

Hopefully this will help clear some things up. From recent first hand experience put away the 22 and the AR and grab a 12 guage with 00 Buck. First off if it's in your yard I hope you have a big one if you let loose with the AR. If I were hunting coyotes other than my yard an AR is a great choice.
A few weeks ago my wife went out the front door and came running back in and asked what the h@#* was in the yard. No more than 10 ft from the front porch was the UGLIEST coyote I had ever seen. He only moved about 30 ft but not enough time to grab my pistol or open up the safe. He kept coming back but at night waiting for the neighbors cat I assume. I caught him under the porch lights and grabbed my AR and put the stock on him around the house. I pulled up and couldn't see a thing. Next night I grabbed the shotgun loaded with buckshot and aimed and fired. Done deal. Here is the world's ugliest coyote! He is aptly named "World Record Ugly" Sorry about the quality of the pics.

um...dude... that's not a coyote. that's a chupacabra. and the fact that you shot him in NH is going to keep me up nights.

My first thought! Trust me I was up nights until he was dead. You can't do anything with it either. I wasn't touchin it! Ended up burying it in the woods as deep as I could get it.

That maybe but I'd bet before that happens the other predators in the pack make a meal of him.

Unlikely. The more likely scenario, is that he cannot keep up with, nor find the pack and if he survives, becomes a weak predator, which will in turn prey on weaker animals, (ie: cats, dogs, farm animals, etc.). Coyotes are opportunists and will feed on the mentioned anyway, but they are top-tier predators, (here anyway sadly) and will engage larger game - until they are too weak to do so....

Dennis, it doesn't matter what you use to hunt the yote. If it's anything like the ones I go after, you'll never see it once you have a gun in your hand!!! LOL

You never see a coyote when you have your gun with you.
[laugh]

That *was* the running joke with my dad and the crew he hung around with growing up outside of Amarillo.

.22 is ok for cats (my dad's finally succumbed) but I would use something a little more stout for a coyote. A bear caliber of say, 9mm should drop it in it's tracks.

Spotted a large one in the woods behind my house today. Now it looks like I'll have to keep an eye or or escort my little dog when she goes out in the yard.

I keep my 1911 close by all the times but wonder if my .22 Marlin rifle would be a better "just in case" tool. I've got lots of acres so shooting on my property isn't a problem, but I still don't want to go overboard on the power.

I suspect a .22 would either drop it or make it stay outta my way.

What do you think?

A .22 stands the chance of a wounded animal, which is no good. The .45 fmj might be OK if you could get close enough (doubtful), and not damage it too much if you wanted to keep the pelt. Recommended poison for coyote is a .17 centerfire if you have one. Next up is a .204 Ruger or .223 I guess for the more common calibers. Good luck!

I told you I had a bunch (5-7) of them trying to screw with me while I was bringing in wood? Just wasn't comfortable shooting in the direction of the 'Pike (or Stafford) with the AR, so I've got a box of those in gov't mandated storage next to my gov't spec secured pump gun, ready to go.

"Don't worry, they're more scared of you than you are of them." Yeah, OK. They're getting way too bold, even out by me. [thinking]

In down on the middleboro carver line and have been seeing more and more. I need to hurry up and get my sportsmans liscense and cut down on thier population.
