STEEL CHALLENGE MATCH (See post #198 for results) Harvard Sportsmen's Club 11-05-11

Folks, I made an error at the last HSCSC match and allowed a compeditor to use a concelment
holster for the match. As the RO I should have known better or asked someone who did,
so please, make sure you have a holster that meets the below criteria, thanks.

3.1 Holsters: In general, holsters shall be mounted in the general vicinity of the waist, must cover the trigger, and must safely hold/retain the gun. All Centerfire handguns must be appropriate for holster use.

3.1.4 Due to the unique nature of the Steel Challenge, drawing from concealment is not allowed.

Now, aren't you glad you brought this up? [rolleyes]

Guys, enough with the ad-homs and bulls**t. This is a thread about the Steel Challenge event, not about holster politics or any of that stuff. Let it go. If the folks running the event want to post a clarification about the rules, fine... and if you want to have an argument about it, take it to PM or email or something. There's no need to crap up an otherwise informative thread.

Thank you.

-Mike

Now everybody knows about the match....

Steel Challenge Comes To Harvard, Mass.

10.11.2011– HARVARD, Mass. - The Harvard Sportsmen's Club announced they will host their first Steel Challenge Shooting Association sanctioned Steel Challenge speed shooting match, complete with all eight Steel Challenge stages, on Saturday, November 5, 2011.

The popular Steel Challenge format offers a fun, yet challenging, competition structure that's ideally suited for new as well as experienced shooters looking to expand their shooting sports experience. Shooters can compete in the match in a variety of categories including Open Pistol, Iron Sight Pistol, Production, Open Revolver, Iron Sight Revolver, Open Rimfire Pistol, Iron Sight Rimfire Pistol, Open Rimfire Rifle and Iron Sight Rimfire Rifle.

“We have had a great response from club members and local shooters to the announcement of our first official Steel Challenge match and, weather permitting, we are expecting 80 to 100 shooters to enter the match,” said match organizer Paul Dandini.

In addition to the strong response from shooters, the Harvard Steel Challenge has also garnered enthusiastic support from the firearms industry. Apex Tactical Specialties, Atlanta Arms & Ammo, Brownells, DC Ammo, Ear Safety Systems, Evolution Gun Works, Inc., GT Targets, Lee Precision, Midway USA, Powder Valley, Pro Ears, Safailand, Sierra Bullets, Smith & Wesson, SureFire, Tactical Defense Solutions, Tactical Solutions, Taurus, The Shooting Wire, Trijicon, Volquarten Custom and Zero Bullet Company have all donated to a random drawing the match is offering to all competitors registered prior to the shooters' meeting.

“With the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships moving to Florida in 2012, there is a lot of interest in expanding the sport of speed shooting and the Harvard match is a great way for New England area shooters to experience the Steel Challenge first hand,” said Dave Thomas of the Steel Challenge Shooting Association.

For those interested in competing on November 5, the match fee will be $20, and just $10 for juniors not accompanied by an adult competitor. Registration will be on-site and will begin at 8:15am and shooters must be registered prior to the shooter's meeting to be entered in the random prize drawing. Shooting is scheduled to begin at 9:00am. Additional information and match updates can be found on the NortheastShooters.com forum.

Great write up Paul. Hoping to see you there so you can teach me the sport [wink] I need to have a mentor

Tom,
I didn't think there was a SASS division.[grin]

There is but I'm not sure if it is being recognized or anyone is shooting it.

SCSA Rule Book said:
A.3.6 COWBOY SINGLE ACTION: Any Single Action revolver
that conforms with appropriate SASS rules and
regulations. Cowboy Single Action shooters may use two
(2) revolvers, with all chambers loaded (6). Upon emptying
the fi rst revolver the competitor may draw their second
revolver (if necessary) to complete the course of fi re.
However, the second revolver may not be drawn until the
fi rst revolver has been fully re-holstered. On either draw,
the hammer may not be cocked until the barrel is pointed
down range. Adjustable sights are allowed. Must conform
with appropriate SASS holster and holster-position rules.
Western attire is encouraged.

Don't know if it'd be legal (and I'm too lazy to look up the SASS rules now) but it's real tempting to try and borrow another Bearcat and do this! [laugh]

I went back to the original post. Paul didn't list SASS for a division. The person I was replying to is someone I shot USPSA with almost 20 years ago. He now plays cowboy.

I did not list this as a catagory - however if an experienced "Cowboy Single Action" shooter wanted to participate I would add if requested..

Just curious, could I shoot my Makarov at this match? It is 9x18mm.

I double checked with John Amidon (Director NROI) - you cannot shoot this in the match for a score but could for fun and no score.
If your holster is questionable you could shoot from the low ready since your score would not count.
See me match day if you go this route..

Sponsor update:
Looks like we have 20+ Sponsors and have put together 45 prize packages. Some of you shooters are going to be quite pleased.
Not everyone will win a prize - but the odds are pretty good.
In order to try and make the drawing process go quick when a shooters name is drawn he/she will be assigned a prize.
The prize list will be available to see at registration the morning of the match.

Just a heads up for this weekends match.

I have received a lot of response from many shooters - I have a feeling that we may get a high number of shooters which means this may be a long day.

Helping out with painting, picking up brass and scoring will make this match run smoother.

PLEASE make sure you have enough mags for this match - a minimum five mags is best.

We will be balancing the squad numbers - so if you want to shoot with a group you should plan to get to registration early.

We will be enforcing the 30 second run rule. "The competitor will be stopped and asked to reload if they reach the 30 second limit".

There will not be any food or beverage vendors at this match - PLEASE bring your own food and refreshments.

Shooters meeting and Random Drawing to start at 8:45am - you must be registered prior to the start of this meeting to eligible for the drawing.

Harvard received a lot of snow this past weekend - the pits may be muddy on Saturday.

Tom,
I didn't think there was a SASS division.[grin]

I think I still can shoot one of those new, modern double action wheelguns....an 8-rounder no less.
Damn, 8 rds in a revolver, what will they think of next??
Looking forward to seeing you again.
Tom
PS Do you know if Fred W will be there?
PPS It's been more than 20 yrs that we started shooting together...you did your ONMB comp on my first pin gun before I went to 2nd Chance. That was in the mid 80's. (Now I really feel old!)
