Panera Bread anti gun?

Considering their crappy soup costs $12 in a bread "boule", this is a non-issue for me.

Why can't they just say BOWL??

Because the type of bread it's served in is called a boule. It's French.

And you can be damn sure that if I owned a restaurant and provided my customers with free wi-fi I would damn sure block sites on MY wi-fi that I thought might drive away other customers if they saw someone at the next table viewing them.

Think about it, If one of the moonbats that generally frequents Panera looks to his left and sees someone looking at an EVIL gun on gunbroker or some other site it might upset them and cause them to leave. If they leave I lose business. If I owned a Panera I'd venture to say more of my customers are anti-gun than pro-gun. Therefore I'd lose more business by keeping the gun sites, porn sites, etc. available than I would by blocking them.

It seems like a normal business decision to me, and if people don't like it they have every right not to patronize the business anymore. Good old free market.

Everytime I go to Panera, I ALWAYS see a minimum of 6 or 7 yuppy douchebag types, pecking away at their laptops.... What they can/cannot access doesn't make the soup taste any worse...so I could care less.

Huh. And all this time, I thought it was a place that sells bread. I've really got to get out more. To ... "fashionable" places.

Our bakery-cafes are an everyday oasis. A place to gather with friends or enjoy a quiet moment alone. Comfortable, friendly, fashionable. A place to recharge and feel rejuvenated. Slip into one of our seriously comfy chairs and stay awhile.

And what the heck is a "hand tossed salad"? Keep yer grubby mits offa my lettuce!

Anyway, I researched, and found this:

Overheard at Panera Bread Sunday Morning

“If Obama were running against Adolf Hitler, I’d vote for Hitler. That’s right. Adolf Hitler.”

Now I’m not saying that this sixty-ish woman is typical of the average McCain supporter. After all, the conversation to the booth next to me (I couldn’t help but overhear–Mary was in line for an extra bagel, and Micah was actually eating his breakfast peacefully) quickly turned to the fact that these senior citizens were stockpiling firearms in their homes so that, when the inevitable Black revolution that will follow Obama’s inauguration starts, they can shoot plenty of Black people.

By the way, please note that I don’t consider such things typical of McCain supporters. To attribute sociopathic tendencies to the whole lot of ‘em based on a sample of three (one speaker and two who immediately agreed) would be dishonest and stupid. Public service announcement over.

Anyway, I don’t have any real philosophical work to do with that; I just had to put it up here. Mary and Micah and I usually grab some bagels and coffee for an inexpensive breakfast before church. I almost asked those folks which church they attend so that I can steer friends away from it, but I didn’t ask. I’d rather not assume that the whole congregation is like that. I’m just trying, with limited success, to deal with the fact that folks who think that way were sitting that close to me on a Sunday morning. But I can’t bring myself to say anything about those folks themselves, only reminders (mainly to myself) that they’re not typical Republicans or Southerners or anything like that, though my third-party, Hoosier soul longs to put them into all the categories that annoy me most often. Perhaps I’m becoming one of those academics who can’t deal with crazy. Oh wait. I haven’t explained that phenomenon to my good blog readers. I sense a future post coming…

It's their right to do whatever they want, but IMO it's dumber than hell, considering you can go into any number of other "Yuppie" shops, and almost none of them filter the access.

For example, when I whenever I go to CA I get on NES from Peet's coffee shops all over the state. None of them block NES. I've never seen
a person near me go "aiiieeee scary gun!" when looking at gun pics from inside the store. (Even moonbats likely realize at some level that being afraid of a PICTURE of a mechanical device is completely f*cking stupid).

I think you guys are over analyzing this whole thing. Some numskull at a specific franchise, or some franchisee, probably checked off too many boxes on a filtering device, that's probably the beginning and the end of it. I doubt they hired a PhD to determine what the best filtering policy would be for business purposes. [laugh]

And there you have it [smile]. Their shit is too expensive anyway.

Yeah, plus I'd rather hit the local sub shop anyway. Half the price and twice as satisfying. Gimme an Italian with the works, NOT a Napa Almond Chicken Salad made with all-natural pepper-mustard chicken, fresh celery, seedless grapes, almonds & our special dressing.

I don't bring my laptop to any restaurant, and that goes for Panera. If I am there it is to eat, not peruse the internet, and I'm not exactly a multi-tasker.[grin] I do love the asiago bread, and bagels. Those frozen mocha things are awesome too with the big huge straws. I usually see college students in my Panera, more so that the yuppie types.

WTF Are you going to ask me to leave if I open up a gun magazine?

Almost certainly WRONG.

Internet filtering companies survive by offering extensive configuration choices, often by category - smut, sex education, drugs, hacking, anon proxy sites, warez sites, weapons related sites, etc. I suspect that Panera handles this on a corporate, not a per-store, basis as they all use the same filtering service. It's simple - Panera chose to filter firearms sites, and could easily choose to remove them from the filter configuration.

They COULD most likely easily remove them, but not if they don't know potential customers are wanting this.

...As jasons said earlier, this is more likely the result of using the default content filter settings on their proxy server than any specific antigun intentions. ...

Again, bring it up and see what they say or do for you.

Probably nothing.

The PFY at the register is likely going to be dumbfounded, and then he will have
to find a manager, who may also be dumbfounded.

It's likely "cheaper" time wise to send an email or letter to the company.

If it is his restaurant, he can set the rules.

I never said he didn't have the right. I said that I didn't like what he is suggesting. Do you really think that people will be 'afraid' of gun pictures on a computer?
More importantly, WE have the right to spend our money elsewhere!!!

Yes, absolutely, without a doubt in my mind.

Just so you guys can actually see, Panera uses Sonicwall I'm 99% sure(correct me if I am wrong please). This is the screen that controls "internet filtering" and categories. By default I think everything is turned off(IE no blocking), someone has to click on the the category they want blocked.

This link will show you how sonicwall categorizes urls. notice what northeastshooters comes up as GAMES.. These places that do these filters SUCK IMO, Other than to filter porn, these managed solutions are really more a PITA than they are worth.

The "screen" there are a total of 64 categories to choose from.

I sent a message to Panera through their website and got a call this afternoon. I had a similar experience of not being able to see a variety of websites, primarily gun sites, when I was there last. I didn't think much of it, but this thread heightened my curiosity.

Initially, according to her, objectionable websites are blocked on an individual basis; when I told her that was ridiculous, she changed her story to say that websites were blocked on a topical or category basis.

I didn't put up much of an argument; they can block anything they want but can't force me to eat there.

Panera Bread serves their soups lukewarm. I always have to heat it up in the microwave... They must have had a lawsuit from someone who burned their tongue.

Yes I have seen people disturbed and frightened by pictures of guns, in Barnes and Noble in Manchester.

Of course you have your right to spend your money wherever you see fit. That's why I put "good old free market" at the end of my previous post.

Did you show a libtard a picture of a gun and say BOO!? [laugh]

I wish. I was walking with a book about guns with several guns on the cover and a woman jumped out of my way when she saw the book and shielded her child's eyes from it. It was hysterical. My two year old laughed at her.

It was either the book or my brutal coffee breath....

I was at Barnes & Noble the other day when a little kid pulled a copy of Guns & Ammo off the magazine rack, the mother's shocked and horrified reaction was priceless. Almost as eye-roll inducing as when i overheard the stock clerks wondering who actually bought those "weird gun magazines."

You should have opened it centerfold for her to see.

And people here wonder why I would not piss on most people I don't know even if they were on fire? They are stupid, helpless sheeple living in a fantasy world of denial. They are not worthy of me risking life or freedom.
