I've always liked Vermont, and recently the wife and I have been looking at leaving MA. I know the laws there re: firearms are more in our favor, but I sometimes wonder if they will stay that way?

I've done some searching but I would like to hear everyone's current opinion on Vermont. She's not as psyched about NH as I am.

Any state you go too the laws can and do change from time to time... luck of the draw my friend....

Some harder than others. About the only thing that could easily change at a state level in NH would be making some areas illegal to carry, which so far it failed the last time someone tried to make it illegal to carry in the state house. Also, with luck look for NH to have Alaska style carry laws in the next year or two.

I'm with you on that. I like Vermont a lot too. And currently their gun laws are more than friendly to people like us. However Vermont is probably the most liberal state that I can think of. They have elected socialist senators. I know that true liberals are not for gun control, but still vermont sways way to the left and it seems like only a matter of time before those liberals start getting looney like the ones we have here. I personally would like to move to a red state, and I'll be looking for states that do not vote for obama in this election as sort of a starting place. That sounds crazy doesn't it?

absolutely right. True liberals do not support gun control, or even many of the programs that the so-called "liberals" we have no support. True liberals follow much more of a libertarian viewpoint

Thanks for the information.

The thing with Vermont liberals I worry about is a sort of time bomb effect. I move their, more ass-hippies get uppity, laws start to suck a lot more.

I'm thinking I'll work more on NH before making a decision. All we have really talked about so far is that this state is making us both unhappy.

I'm in the same exact shoes as you and those are the two top states that we are looking at. NH for the same reason that you listed is probably going to be better in the long run, as long as us freedom loving types get up there and vote and stay on top of things so that NH doesnt turn out like MA did. There are a lot of yuppies moving up to southern NH from MA and they want to change things for the worse up there. People like us who move to NH have to respect the locals by doing our part to make sure that does not happen.

I like the rest of VTs gun laws... but the stupid ban on suppressors has
got to go. I'm not going to pull up stakes to move to a place that won't let
me own cans.

That's exactly the kind of thing that has me worried about moving there.

We need more good folk in NH than Vermont does … the Mass Exodus has been primarily focused on New Hampshire because the Ma**h***s have been weekending up here for years to avoid paying their Sales Tax and to get cheap Booze (Sunday sales were a draw for a long time) and Smokes. so in their minds NH = Wicked Cheapahhhhh!!!!!

Of course they move in, set up shop, and then freak out that there's no one from The Kennedy dynasty telling them how to live, so they start doing what they do best and that's voting in the same patterns that wrecked the state they left.

In the past have owned two parcels in VT...mostly for hunting purposes. One was a 32-34 acre parcel in the "Northeast Kingdom" (Island Pond). The other was 35 acres in Norton and was undeveloped. It was a stones throw away from the Quebec checkpoint and back-bordered on lumber company land...good for hunting. Have found that the "locals" are not for the most part amenable to what they call the "flatlanders". The Island Pond property had a house trailer on it and I had to do cartwheels to get insurance on it. The insurance agent flat out told me that "they" were not happy with "out of staters" coming in and buying property. I had intentions of developing this piece and building an A-Frame cabin on the property so that it could be used as a vacation home and hunting site. The red tape involved was ridiculous. Can't even remember at this point....all I know is it was ludicrous. Came across some good neighbors who helped me cut and clear the area, and were just regular folks. We got along well. Conversely, anything having to do with the the town hall and politicians in both Island Pond and Norton was like hitting a stone wall. Eventually ended up selling the Island Pond piece to an abutting owner and sold the Norton piece to a friend that was looking for an investment. Perhaps the more developed and city-type areas are different, but it has been my experience that VT as a state wants to cater to "tourists" and puts the halt on industrial and suburban development. All well and good, but it limits the tax base and puts that much more burden on the taxpayers. Bottom line....proceed carefully and check out all in depth for not only the purchase, but also changes you may want to make. Bright side.....At the time I had PTC in RI, MA and NH. Stopped into the local State Police barrack and inquired as to what I needed to do to also get a permit in VT. The trooper on duty informed me that VT has no LTC and anyone can do so....and if he had any input into the system, that would never change. What a mixed bag it was.[grin]

Ray, sorry to hear about your experiences in Island Pond. My family has a cabin right outside of Island Pond we have had nothing but great experiences. My uncle just completed 6 person Adirondack shelter on his property to complement the cabin.

I myself and pulling for New Hampshire but I would not rule out VT if property and employment worked out better.

I always thought I would retire to VT or NH but it looks like VT may be going more towards moonbattery than I care for so NH is looking better and better. Either way I certainly will not be staying in the Peoples Republic of Massholio.

VT's only downside is ...no suppressors.

We're working on it.

Remember, most of our Liberals are also gun owners. There's a LOT of naive people that seem to think the Democrats are their friends. That socialist Senator is a far better friend of gun owners than the other senator, or the man he replaced. Not what I'd call pro-gun, but definitely not anti-gun, either. Anyways, he votes the way the constituents want him to, for the most part.

The deal about development is true. We had a rash of people move in over the past 40 years, and many of them try to turn the place into the same "manure pit" they just left. Well, this isn't New Jersey, New York or Mass up here, and we intend for it to stay that way. Just remember, you aren;t the ONLY people from your area to move here, and odds are the previous ones made themselves very unwelcome.

If you're on this forum, you'll probably find the west side of the state to be nice, and fairly friendly, as long as you stay to the "sticks". Your neighbor the Liberal, will not find it very friendly, and will probably get encouraged to return home, after they gripe about the smell of manure, etc, etc.
