Now we have Obama with a "Global Security Summit".
There are a few things to remember in situations like this that seem to be routinely ignored. First, being a victim does not make one a hero (these "Charlie Hebdo" guys seem pretty silly to me). Second, just because something bad happens does not imply the risk of it happening in the future is any different than it was in the past. This event is notable because it happened and because such events are rare, but there is no reason to expect that rarity to change. I'll predict this dies out once the media get bored with it.
In sum, when we look at risks to life and liberty in the west the fact is that violent Islamists are just about irrelevant, while government reaction and public fear are far bigger concerns. This could change, but so far the big takeaway from the post-9/11 "war on terror" is that the risk rarely materializes and when it does the west overreacts.
