Looking for a Suunto watch, Navy SEAL style

EMS has them all...

http://www.ems.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3718352&sr=1&origkw=suunto

I just called up and you DO NOT have to be any sort of "member" to get the lifetime satisfaction guarantee.

That is much needed since the last Suunto crapped out on me - I didn't buy it from EMS, though.

I know such a guarantee is hard to believe so you could confirm by calling the 800 number at the top of the page.

I don't consider myself an "operator", but have done some high speed, low drag stuff off South America.. I own a Suunto Core in all black but when I deploy, my Gshock makes the sea bag because it is indestructible... I do like how the Suunto takes a CR2032 battery (although does not last nearly as long as the Gshock), can be changed using a quarter, and some of the features that are nice (I would not trust my life with the compass though)... However, the Gshock lasts way longer and is figuratively bulletproof...My friends who are seals rock gshocks... Don't even get me/them started on Luminox... Besides 5.11 khakis and FDE hats, Luminox is the dead giveaway for a range hero/poser/Tactical Timmy.... Just some food for thought.

I got a black Casio from Amazon for 12 dollars. Looks just like the luminox seal watch. Had it for a year a still going string.

You might want to check that. My most recent Suunto was made in China. I was very disappointed.

From the Suunto web site. My google skills are good tonight:

The Core, Lumi, t1c, t3d, t4d, M-Series and Quest are designed in Finland and assembled in China.

All other Suunto watches are designed and made in Finland.

Maybe model specific, mine says "Made in Finland". Of course, no one has ever fibbed on that label either.

Edit, Mine's a Vector, your gogglefu might imply it was a Finland, but something I'll keep in mind if/when I replace it. I don't buy crap made in china if I can find a similar item not made there even at 2x the cost.

Edit 2: I just don't like how 'clunky' the Gshocks seem. When I was crawling around in the desert, all those 'blocks' caught sand when I saw others wearing them.

Bad hit the nail on the head. Had and still have couple Suuntos they are pretty good. Gshock takes a beating, literally. However always loved my MTM.

The G shock is preferred by many active military personnel and people with active lifestyles. The Suunto has more of a following with divers as actual equipment. The Suunto isn't as comfortable on the wrist as the G shock either and it will lose it's appeal quickly due to it. Best bet try them on before buying most people who collect watches do this because pretty pictures can't tell them how well they will fit.

Which model is this? I can't find this on the g shock page. Also, does this glow in the dark by itself like luminox?

I love Casio, want day date, this could be perfect. Thanks.

Not sure of the model. It's not a shock. Search amazon for it. It comes in a couple of colors and is around 18 to 20 dollars. Yes it does glow in the dark but not as well as the luminox but it's a fraction of the cost.

I'm really interested in the Core, but I think my 8" wrists might be too small. Going to hit REI to try one on.

Anyone else with "girly wrists"? [rofl]

I just tried my Core on my wife. It fit with 2 extra holes to go in the band. She's 5'1" with proportionally sized wrists. You should be fine.

Re the Core battery. I get a bit less than a year out of a battery but so what.

It uses the CR2032 that my Aimpoint Micro T1 and Burris TRS25 as well as about ten of my kids' toys use. I buy them by the dozens directly from Taiwan. I think its $5 including shipping for 20 of them.

The back removes easily with a quarter.

So while longer life would be good. This is about as simple as it gets when you do have to change the battery.

Don

p.s. Here's an add for 50 of the 2032 batts for $12 shipped!!

While we are on the topic now of analog watches, I have to include the mechanical seikos. They range in price from $50 to about $200 and have high quality Japanese automatic movements. I'm a sucker for an auto winding mechanical watch. I own a couple of Swiss ones but they are extravagances. I can own as many of these as I want.

This is one of my beaters:

I don't own this, but its a step up:

Another nice one

Buy a ****ing Breitling and be done with it.

But if you are set on sun to, I'll check if they are on 3point5 or pro motive.
If they are I'll hook you up with the best price out there since I run a sports store and will be able to get it for well under wholesale.

two different watches for different purposes.

In 2000 I was freshly divorced and a newly minted private pilot. I got myself a Navitimer. I wouldn't wear the Breitling places I wear my Suunto or cheap Seiko or even cheaper Casio. The Casio is the only one i consider to be disposable. I'll use that for painting, for example. $16 shipped is tough to beat. Its not half bad looking but its a little small.

Ok, through 3point5, I can get Suunto for 50% off retail pricing.

BUT since I just noticed you are a brand new and not even green member, i have to reluctantly hold my offer of assistance until you establish yourself here for a couple months.

Damn this thread for fueling my watch lust. Not to derail it or anything, but does anyone have any first hand experience with Tawatec watches? I'd love a good watch in that style and like Luminox, but their reviews are so mixed and there's always the tacti-cool crowd thing...

Gabriel Gomez might have one to sell you. He was a SEAL.

yeah but something you may not know about him is that while being a SEAL he was hired by another group of SEALs to work for them too. cuz he was double as cool as a lowly single SEAL.

I'm a greeny.... Lmao.

Good lord! class act... "I can get this, but you can't have it!"... How does one "establish" oneself?

Also, I agree with Don about the Breitling comment...you are comparing a truck to a sports car. Great in their own way, but not comparable because they are for different jobs... next thread!!

I have a few nice (expensive, and by expensive I mean they cost as much or a little more than a quality pistol or rifle) watches. My favorite is the Omega Seamaster Professional. It is more durable than any G-Shock, requires no batteries, and looks right when I'm wearing a suit or work clothes. That being said, I really like the G-Shock line and own several. I did buy a Suunto a few years ago but returned it because it felt cheap, was difficult to read, and was not comfortable to wear.

For a durable do-anything watch, at a more reasonable cost try this: http://www.gshock.com/watches/Aviation/GWA1000-1A

For a durable mechanical watch, also reasonably priced, try this: http://countycomm.com/midpilot2013.html

So how cheap would a core be? Am I established enuff? ;)

I also have an Omega Seamaster... and a couple of Tags. Let me know when/where you want to test out that durability claim of your Omega auto vs. my Gshock!! Even if i lose, (which I wont), I will buy another for $80, and you will be $3k in the hole! Again, again, again- I am not trying to dispute the fact that Breitling/Omega are nice watches...as i aforementioned, I have an Omega that i wear out to dinner occasionally. But, when I am down range, the Gshock is it....

I am getting frustrated as to why we are comparing Breitling/Omega with Suunto/Gshock!- er, frustrated isnt the right word..annoyed?
