Any shops in or close enough to Dedham where I can go during lunch from work? The closest ones from searching give me those in Natick and Woburn..

B&K and the other shop a block down the street (name escapes me but they have a good selection too) is just about the closest and then you have to go through Swellsly center which will eat up a good 20 min. Best bet is taking 109 and gutting over through Dover to Natick. You're still talking like an hour.

Of course Bass Pro just down the 1 from Dedham, lots of camo and long guns but the handgun selection is weak sauce. Gartman Arms in Wrentham was this amazing shop that was more like a museum, it really was because if you asked about a gun he almost always said, thats in my personal collection and not for sale. Sadly the old timer and fascinating orator passed about a year ago. I heard his daughter was going to open the place again and expand the hours and selection. Benko only opened one day a week, I used to go just to hear his stories. You may want to check out if she re opened the store.

Also probably equidistant to all of the other recommendations there is Zero Hour Arms in Easton. I have nothing to say about the place other than its there.

Does AAA police supply on Rt 1 even sell firearms and ammo anymore?

I've heard it only sells ammo. It must have weird hours because I never see it open.

AAA only sells ammo now, no guns (info from my discussion with the owner).

It is always open unless (IIRC) the steel grates are down. Film on windows so you can't see in. It is a "cop shop" and non LE aren't treated all that well there. Front 2/3 of the store is all uniforms. Back 1/3 is police equipment.

I don't consider Dick-less or Bass Pro "gun shops" as selection is very limited and prices (for handguns) at BP are ridiculous.

B&K Sales and gfaTech in Natick are probably the closest but travel will kill most of an hour long lunch hour.

+1 for suggesting BassPro.

I went into Gartman Arms once inquiring about 1911's. Benko had one that he showed me. I knew it was something special as when he took it out of the drawer, he did so with white gloves. It was a (circa) 1914 model original Colt 1911. An amazing piece of history, but at $5K+, well out of my price range.

I bought boots and OC spray there. I was treated just fine.

Nothing besides Dicks is really "close" if by "close" you actually mean time and not distance. Other than Dick's everything is going to be at least 20-40 minutes in typical traffic. Within 40 minutes though, you have Dicks, Bass Pro, Four Seasons (Woburn), Collectors Gallery (Stoneham), Sportsman's Den (Quincy), Hunter's Trading Post (Weymouth).

Other than Dick's, of them, Sportsman's Den probably the quickest at about 20 min in average traffic and Hunter's next. I'm not sure where zero hour fits in.

Natick has good shops as mentioned and definitely add Mass Firearms School to the list in Holliston, but Natick traffic sucks, so these will be over an hour typically. If your going this far, there is also Northeast Trading Co (North Attleboro), M&J (Rockland) and not much further, your back home with Pullman arms and Gun parlor in Worcester, which usually have as good a selection and better prices lol.

You obviously don't know the back roads to Natick! 109 to 27 directly to both shops is a lot less than 1 hour from Dedham, probably 20 minutes tops.

I know the backroads well, but they can be tricky and don't seem to be routed that way via GPS of mapquest etc.. Your right thouh, you can sneak down South st to Charles river rd and over. in typical traffic still over 40 minutes if you don't get lost. Maybe less from West of Dedham center, but can take 10mi + just to get through Dedham from from some parts. Remind me to stay clear of the roads when your driving if it takes you 20 minutes though :)

THIS is how I go it is pretty much a straight shot from 109, the only time you can get lost is a turn just before Dover on the way back from Natick.

I assumed LenS meant cut through the back roads from 109 to 27? Anytime I've actually gone on 109 and 27 it takes about an hour. Some sections are quick, but during the day some can be as bad as rt9. The back roads from 109 to 27 can be quicker, but lots of backroads, turns and poorly marked streets. Sorry if drifting off topic, but curious if I'm missing something.

I just ran Microsoft Streets & Trips straight 27 from Walpole Ctr to Natick Ctr is listed as 13.4 miles/21 minutes (just to get a baseline since you seem to think this is a very long arduous route on 27).

Now I'll admit that "Dedham" can be anywhere from the Red Cross/Commuter Rail area to Westwood by 109/128. Letting this program run from Dedham Ctr to Natick Ctr by Rte 128 to Rte. 9 to Rte. 27 is listed as 14.6 miles/22 minutes. Running straight 109 to 27 at Medfield Ctr is listed as 18.3 miles/34 minutes. Another option is grabbing 135 to Natick Ctr. and that runs 10.8 miles/23 minutes (this is the way I leave B&K/Morse Tavern on our monthly Thursday night NES get togethers but at 10PM traffic is rather light).

Not that I would ever advise this [grin], but you can make some good time on those roads even at rush hour.

Isn't Dover the one that on the way back, the sign is bent and hidden behind a tree? I don't know how many times I've go that way, but miss that turn every flipping time LOL. Agree nice drive. Some of those roads can feel like your Western Ma, but likewise, if you miss a turn much of it all looks the same ( to me at least :)

I know both Map-quest and my GPS usually tell me 30 minutes 95 (or 95-> mass pike) through rt 9 "in current traffic " LMAO. I agree it can be quicker if you know the area and especially if you can avoid any road with the prefix "rt"!
