Ak...build or buy??

A barrel and rivet tools which usually consist of jigs.

If you don't plan on building at least 3 or 4, it's cheaper to buy. Kits aren't cheap anymore.

Personally I would buy unless you have the tools and know how to really do the job and do it right, it is insanely frustrating depending on anyone trying to help you with a build if needed.

Just buy,not economical to build anymore unless you have kits stored away and the tools to do it.

"Bucket O' Romanian "G" Parts": $200.00
Southern Armament Receiver: $ 80.00
"A little help from a gunsmith": $150.00

Being offered $800.00 for a cool looking AK? Priceless!

(sorry, not for sale)

The build I am currently doing was a barreled kit for $309, a $65 receiver (call it $100 with shipping and transfer), and a $25 FCG (which I bought 'ship to store' from Walmart.com [grin]). Should come in under $450 all together.

There seems to be a ton of AKs in the dealer ads for $500. Unless you have access to the tools, I agree it's cheaper to buy one.

But if you really want to build one, it is definitely worth the effort.

extra triple bonus:

all that shit is if you want to do it right. the minimum parts/tool list is:

arbor press for barrel.
rivet jaws/bolt cutter.
punch set for trigger guard.
extra set of rivets.
parts kit.
alcohol.

you can make your own version of this, but if you don't want to hulk smash your rivets flat and/or care about appearance you need this as well:

other guise feel free to add to this list, but i think i got most of it.

Where u seeing 500 dollar aks

I paid under $500 for my new npap with shipping and transfer and pinning the muzzle brake. ($430 +$free shipping, +$25transfer, +$40pinning the brake = $495)

If you just want an AK / new range toy, buy one.
If you enjoy tinkering and building things yourself, are mechanical inclined, and are always looking for an excuse to buy more tools, build one.
I built mine and after all the tools and time it definitely wasn't the cost effective way to go, probably broke even. But it was fun (and frustrating at times), I like the look on non-gunners faces when I tell them I built an AK, and it gave me a great familiarity with the firearm.
