223/556

Piston side charger in 556? Aside from finding an actual AK in 556 in MA, there are: Sig 556 Swat or Patrol. CZ Bren 1/2. Faxon ARAK (good luck finding one). Strike Industries SIAR (if they ever actually release it). Scar. You're going to need deep pockets for any of these.

But really, depends on why you want this "AK-like" 556. Is it the piston? (apparently there are piston kits for AR's out there). Is it the side charger? (AR10 build? CETME L or HK33?).

This thread does not deliver.
Not sure if bullpup.

Because of Poland and Bulgaria joining NATO, there's been a number of 5.56 AKs used by our allies since the end of the Cold War, specifically the wz. 96 Beryl and AR-M1. Serbia's also moved to 5.56 from 7.62x39 since the end of the Balkan Wars. Here's the problem for Mass people - the only AKs to come into the US prior to 1994 that would've been in .223/5.56 were Valmets in .223 and a very small number of Chinese AKs, a tiny amount in comparison to the potentially million plus of 7.62x39 Chinese AKs. Most Valmets were in .223 because prior to the Chinese guns, 7.62x39 was hard to find and expensive, so, .223 was the best seller for Valmets.

There are also .223/5.56 Saigas and Veprs on the market - I used to own a .223 Saiga. Good luck finding one in Mass or finding an out-of-state dealer willing to send one into Mass. Though, an unconverted gun would probably be much easier, except the problem is the Obama Saiga and Trump Vepr import bans mean that there's no more new Russian guns anymore.

Currently, FB Radom, Zastava, Arsenal, and WBP are the only companies exporting .223 guns into the US.

Your probable best bet is to find an unconverted Saiga or Vepr. A kit or a parts build is also doable - FB Radom barrels and bolts are available online. If you can get a Zastava M90 or a new FB or WBP or Arsenal in... great. Otherwise, the only "easily" accessible pre-89 .223 AK is a Valmet.

The other problem with 223/556 AKs is up until the past decade or so, most AKs in that caliber had some f***o proprietary magazine going on, whether it was Valmet or whoever. At one time there were like THREE f***ing formats. I think they're all standardized mags now though.

I know that Polish and Bulgarian mags and guns generally work together. The new Zastava M90 is supposed to work with Polish and Bulgarian mags and people are saying that the M90 works ok with different sorts of mags.

Russian guns are their own thing unless the gun was converted to take something else. The Saiga I owned wasn't converted and took proprietary mags. If I kept it, I would've found a different solution and probably put a bullet guide in.

Valmets are proprietary and expensive, yes. These and the older, rare Chinese mags are also the only pre-94 mag options. I have no idea if Valmet mags are compatible with other .223 AKs because I don't own a Valmet or live in Mass.

This.

It’s a problem in MA. It places the cost of entry close to the $3k mark, currently, if you want standard capacity.

That’s why I told the OP to save up and get an AR 180. At least the mags, though proprietary, can be readily converted from preban AR mags with minimal effort.

It comes down to what he wants the gun for. If he just wants a .223 AK, there's a lot of great options, even some that would work in Mass. If he's looking for a multi-purpose rifle in Mass, it gets bad.

I like .223 AKs but I can buy any mags I want and I'm not restricted to used guns, basically. I also don't need NES to hold my hand as I buy guns.

From a functional point of view, the closest thing to an AK in .223/5.56 in a modern sporting rifle in MA is actually a Tavor, since they are both long stoke piston designs. See my post in the gun porn thread:

OP is hiding already, most likely, and we will never know what the idea even was.

The practical reality of building up an arsenal of non-NATO weapons here in states always eluded me - but i understand some like to collect old warsaw pact weaponry, and may have other sentimental reasons - why not. nothing wrong with that. my take on any weapons i own is a same i have toward my screwdrivers or pliers - i just want it to be functional and reusable/repairable and as less problematic as possible.
if i could legally buy a military m4/m16 - i would do that, i cannot, so, a standard AR15/10 is the next best thing, the tavor x95 that takes same AR15 magazines is the next best thing, and i got both. tavor even has an additional, probably temporary, benefit of not being officially outlawed yet. but, again, i am not a collector and do not see any of those weapons as collectables.

any reason to deal with non-NATO calibers here, in AKs, or an AK clone in NATO caliber with no way to use standard military issued magazines eludes me - it is indeed quite pointless.

i think OP may not be aware of how to buy and build/own a modern AR (almost) legally in MA, and that was, probably, the point of the conversation, but, as OP does not respond - go figure.

I’m still confused to what the op is looking for. lol
OP wants to be cool but shoot 5.56. (So, only half cool - or Bi).

I give him credit for not wanting to be seen holding an AR.

OP, did you Google AK in .223/5.56? ... because if you did, you would find out there is something called the AK 101, and that was the first link I found. I am sure there are more out there.

Lol, wanting to shoot 5.56 and not just using an AR to do it is basically punching yourself in the dick.

Getting an AK in 556 is a check swing dick self punch. 545 x 39 or 762 x 39 only pls in an AK.

Prior to kung flu, x39 was readily available and cheap as f***. It’s still available.

but nothing that shoots it is cheap enough anymore. if i would buy anything for that caliber it would be probably the VZ58 - and it is actually even legal to be sent to our MA FFLs, from what i found out - but, i am hesitant and, frankly, out of space to keep ammo for calibers i can shoot already.

current prices for steel .223 and steel x39 ammo are comparable and will unlikely be too different in the future to justify getting a whole new $1k+ gun for it.

You are approaching this the wrong way.

Brain: Why do I want a new gun?
Brain: Because I can.
Swipes card.

That's the deaicion making process for a new gun.

Start here.

Then save your pennies and buy an AR 180.
This.

People like having their opinions validated by others and telling other what to do. For example:

See, telling other people what to do.
I think it's called shitposting (he even gave you a smiley). I'm sad I can't give him a 😂 and a 😍 at the same time. But he replied, so one of each!

Get IWI Tavor x95. Sweet, sweet rifle! The ONLY two things I would change is add a gasketed port cover on the left side and swap the buttpad to the more comfortable curved version.
The rifle is like a mix of all things that are good: Steyr AUG bullpup comfort and balance, AR's interoperability, and AK's superb gas system. I just saw a Mass-compliant version of it at Shooter's Outpost for something like $1700. If the choice is $3500 for a nice pre-ban AR or a brand new Tavor for half the price, well, the choice is simple, isn't it?

there is a whole thread on that topic.

Current is different. Prior to kung flu, AKs were cheap in America. Cases of x39 were available in the 150-170 range, sometimes cheaper.
Then was the time to buy. Can’t you still get SKSs and similar in mass?
