I've challenged myself to learn one new skill each month in 2014. January will be learning to tie 5 new knots. Feb I'm enrolled in a fabric weaving class. Still thinking about the rest of the year, but I got a fancy new compass for Christmas so learning how to use that will be one month and probably getting my HAM radio license will be another. I think I'd also like to learn to kill and dress a chicken.

Thanks! We actually got a game last year that has a deck of cards with knots, 4 strands of nylon rope and two rings so in addition to learning the knots, you can also make a game out of it to see who can tie the fastest or do the most in a set amount of time. Problem was, we never got to it and it sat all year, so I decided this year I'm gonna start learning these knots! I've chosen as my first 5: Figure Eight, Clove Hitch, Reef, Carrick Bend, and Bowline. AFter some online research, these made the top 5 or 10 lists on many sites.I have this. It's got a deck of cards with 50 different knots. It also includes a couple sticks and some string so you're good to go right away. I think I got it at REI for about $5.
