I'm making my Christmas list, and I would like a scope. In my family, it's best to be specific- does anyone have a recommendation for a cheap (Under $70?) scope for my 10/22? I'd like to use it for plinking and Appleseed. It's probably best to get it from Dicks or Cabelas, and a link to a product description would be best. I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what's best, I'm a little lost.

UNDER $70, huh? Maybe a Center Point AR22 3x-9x scope. They're pretty decent for the price. But you're about $40 short of the low end of scopes most people actually recommend and like on their 10/22s.

It's a bit over your $70 budget, but it's worth the money - Mueller APV

2nd the Mueller APV it is fantastic

Third vote for the Mueller APV.... Great scope for the money......

Vote #5 for the Mueller APV.

When I purchased mine it was $114. Not too much over the $70 budget... and worth it. I love mine.

EDIT: I just realized... that none of us gave any reasons why you should go with the APV (besides our vote)... So here are my reasons (shared by the 4 before me, I'm sure) why you should bump up your budget a tad and go for the APV. The thing with Mueller is that, somehow, they're able to give you a scope, for a ~$100+ price tag, that has the optical clarity and brightness that you usually find in scopes that have $400+ price tags. That's reason #1. Reason #2 is... it holds zero.

So in the Mueller APV... you get a reliable scope... and a scope that optically performs as well as scopes costing 3-4 times as much. You can't really ask for more. It's a great value... and you should take a good look at them.

EDIT 2: I purchased my APV in 2007 from Dennis at Mizzou Mule Guns (http://www.mizzoumuleguns.com/id12.html) and he's a stand up guy. It's a small operation but he takes care of his customers. Current prices: the black APV is $115 (includes shipping and a matching sunshade that other retailers charge $10 extra for) and the silver APV is $125 (includes shipping and a matching sunshade that other retailers charge $10 extra for). At the time, I purchased the scope from him because his prices were the best... no one else was offering free shipping and a free sunshade. From taking a quick look around online... that's still the case.

Well, I don't know about the OP, but you convinced me. I emailed Dennis tonight.

I use Mueller APV's on my 22's. On a 10/22 with a DNZ mount, you can't get better for the same price. Here's mine:

And no, that scope isn't touching the barrel, it's less than a credit cards width away.

dude... your rifle screams ricer! [rofl]

add a spoiler and fog lights...

Hey, any accurized 10/22 screams ricer. After all, it basically is. All in, though, I'm looking forward to having a rifle where I put most of the parts together. It's like building an AR, but not as pricey.

Mine is going to look very similar, I think...

Wow, that scope is huge. I'm also looking for scopes ( http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/threads/52103-30mm-scopes?highlight=scope ). The Leapers one seems more in line with the intent of a hunting/plinking .22. Nobody mentioned if the Leapers is available at Dick's or where else it might be available locally.

Somehow, I don't like the "rimfire" scopes. A decent fixed 3x or 4x (more common) seems right for a .22. Actually, a red dot also seems like a good or better idea, but some of those are going to run above $70 as well.

To the original poster, Dick's has I think Simmons, BSA, and Bushnell ones which might work for you.

Nice! Rumor has it that a STOCK(yep, believe it or not) 10/22 with tech sights is an appleseed slayer.

On Nickle's advice, I went with a vintage 1" steel-tube Weaver scope off of eBay. Judging by the reactions from folks who shoot my 10/22 (and my AR, which has a similar scope), I'm not the only one who likes it. Both scopes came in around $70. Here's one: http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-WEAVER-...913?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a60b4dcd1

There are others on eBay, too. key words to look for are 1" steel tube and "el paso" (where they were made in the 60's).

Good luck.

What is the mounting like? Aren't the Rugers supposed to be easier because of some integral scope mounts or bases or mounting points or something like that? Does that require any special adapters, rings, or other hardware?

Here are a couple I found on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/UAG-4x30-TAN-P4...246?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item564128f74e

http://cgi.ebay.com/4x30-TACTICAL-C...457?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f04e67f99

http://cgi.ebay.com/SIMMONS-WHITETA...441?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588b2def41

The only name brand here I'm at all familiar with is the Simmons. Maybe someone else will weigh in here with some info or opinions (ya think?).

10/22's come drilled and tapped for mounts from the factory, and are shipped with a Weaver ring compatible mount. Most mount manufacturers make a mount for 10/22s - Weaver included. One of the best out there is from Dednutz - and not that expensive compared to a mount and rings.

I haven't had good results with inexpensive optics. Bad glass, and non-repeatable windage and elevation adjustments were my most common issues. Recoil shouldn't be much of an issue on the 10/22, though, and if you're going to sight in at one range and not mess with it again than adjustment repeatability should be less of an issue. You might get lucky....

My preference for a general purpose 10/22 scope would be a US made steel tube Weaver V7 Microtrak, or if you really don't want a variable a K4 from the same era. (My personal preference is almost always variable power scopes.) Those are, I believe, the last generation of scopes to come out of Weaver in the US before their production went overseas. Very well made, and not so old that collectors are driving up the prices yet. Check Ebay. I'd also look at Vortex and Swift - Vortex makes a full range of scopes, and Swift makes good (but not great) less expensive glass. Perhaps something like this.
