It's obvious that we don't know all the facts here.
If this happened while you were in the military and thus unable to protest it, you should have turned it over to JAG. It's my understanding that you are given some additional protections while on active duty and JAG is there to assist you.
Now is now, however!
Here's my current advice based on the scant info we have to work with:
- Go see a competent firearms attorney, then
- Make an appointment for the 2 of you to visit with the chief.
- Ignore IA within a PD . . . very unlikely to find any "wrong doing" within based on the word of an outsider (unless you broadcast a videotape of said wrongdoing)!
- Failing that, a visit to the Town Manager and/or Selectmen would be appropriate.
- Failing that, I'd consider filing a complaint with the State Inspector General's office. I am no expert on their authority, but what little reading I have done seems to indicate that they have power over the "abuse of power" by other gov't officials "under the color of law".
- A lawsuit should be the last choice. I don't have any faith in our judicial system and when it comes to guns in MA, I have even less faith on a fair outcome.
