Pediatrician Asks, Why Can’t I Talk To You About Guns In The Home?

Both times I brought my wife into BWI to give birth they took her back to a room and had me wait in the reception area. After ~10-15 minutes a nurse came out and got me. During the time they were getting her changed into a gown, etc. they asked her if she was safe at home and if she wanted me to be there, etc.

They did the same thing with my wife before both births. It's no big deal as long as she knows not to mouth off.

under sexual preference i wrote ammosexual. my doctor didn't think it was funny, he went on to tell me guns are dangerous my reply was so are woman but i married one. he finally giggled.

And you are more likely to be stabbed by your wife than shot with a gun! Hey, doc, should I secure my wife at might when not in use? [rofl]

Happened to me during my wife (then fiancee) interview at the Colombian Consulate - they approved her for the K1 (Think 90 Day Fiancee without the drama) and as soon as the guy said "Welcome to the United States" he handed her a DV pamphlet - I just looked at him and he shrugged his shoulders then mouthed that not his choice.
She said they questioned her about her safety HERE when she got to the POE.
I don't know...brave new world

Kind off off topic but somewhat related....You should see the way they treat fathers in the hospital when you bring your wife in to deliver a baby. I went to take a leak and came back and saw domestic abuse pamphlets on the table next to her bed....The SECOND I left the room they rushed in to ask my wife if I beat her and if she wanted me there or not as they can have me removed if she doesn't feel safe. My wife was like, ummm no he's my husband and I obviously want him here. But then they still left the pamphlets for her to read.

White males are the ONLY group that you can blatantly discriminate against with no fear of consequences.

I just think it's ****ed up that the default setting is "the father's probably a beater so let's discriminate against him and sort it out after". **** that. Salem hospital didn't pull that shit until I left the room. At least they were discreet about it. My wife doesn't need privacy to change into a gown before labor, I'm the one that put the ****ing baby in her, I'm the one she showed her underwear to to ask if I thought her water broke or if she was leaking transmission fluid. the fake pretense of privacy would have pissed me off.

In a perfect world anytime doctors ask questions about "guns in the home" or some bullshit, Zangief would appear and just spinning piledriver them into oblivion. Does the doctor ever ask if you have a swimming pool? A trampoline? Probably not.

I have had friendly conversations with my dentist about shooting, now I am thinking twice about it and whether any of that information made it on to the notes in my chart. Can I simply request to see those notes and my chart?

I hope you're being sarcastic, most dentists haven't been polluted with this PC bullshit, yet. Hell that's the only thing I -like- about going to the dentist, is it's the only medical provider where I won't be given a lecture about what I do with my life.

Fortunately our pediatrician never asked. If he had, it would have gone something like this, depending on my mood...

"MYOFB"

"I don't discuss what valuables or security measures I have at home."

"Tell me what courses and seminars you've completed in firearms safety because I'm relatively sure I have more training on this topic than you."

"I don't get medical advice from a firearms instructor. I'm not going to discuss firearms safety with a medical person. Stick to your area of expertise."

Perfect

I do not share any firearms information with my doctors. There was one exception. I was at the dermatologist for my annual skin cancer screening. A few days prior, I caught a piece of hot brass at my neckline. It left a red mark. The MD commented that it might need a biopsy. I told him it was a burn. He asked me how I burned it and I told him I'd rather not discuss it. He told me he does not enter any personal information into the medical record. I told him it was a common affliction left by hot brass.
As far as some commenters being edgy about their wives being asked about personal safety while you are out of the room, consider that there are thousands of women who are beaten to a pulp by their spouses, domestic partners, and others each year. For many women, the only opportunity to get help, to get out alive may be by answering that question honestly. When your wife is about to deliver your child, if things at home are not good, they won't get better after the birth. Unless you have personal knowledge of spouses who are beaten, it's hard to realize how big of a problem it is. BTW: Many DV victims are male.
Best regards.

Wife beating scumbags exist in sufficient numbers that we all get to be suspected of being such. We live in a very sick world.

I took a full size white male (6", 200+) to the ER for an injury.

They insisted I step back from the counter so they could ask him if his wife was beating him.

When you get old they start to ask you: Do you feel safe at home? But only once, in my case. Jack.

You don't have to be old to get that question. When I was about 35, I got up on the roof to trim some tree branches. Before I got down from the roof, I lowered the tree trimmer down off the roof, but not carefully enough. It kicked up into my calf, cut through my jeans, and left with an inch long cut through the skin. It clearly needed stitches, so I went to the ER. It was the triage nurse who asked me the "do you feel safe in your home" question.

The worst I've seen is at a small Harvard Pilgrim office in Harvard.. "No guns allowed" signs all over the place and first question asked when talking about "safety".

If I get asked this I plan to reply by kissing my biceps and saying "yeah, these two". That way I'm technically not lying.

If I did that they would laugh and then have me committed...lmao...

Confidentiality no longer exists.
If it goes into a computer and the government wants it , the government will get it, period.
And with the lead medical organization in this country actively and openly anti gun and promoting an anti 2nd amendment agenda , WTF are we supposed to think?
Maybe if the medical profession stayed out of politics the level of trust would be there.
As it stands now , I would not say anything to a Doctor I would say to a Federal agent because most likely that's where the information is going to end up anyway.

My PC is at newton Wellesley and when I had my annual physical last month the nurse just handed me a tablet and asked me
to fill out the "survey"
are you depressed?
any feelings of hopelessness
andy unusual changes in mood
Do you drink alcohol
do you have any guns in the home
do you have any children and about 10 more questions that really "Prodded" on mental condition.
It's a part of the "Epic" software system a lot of Mass hospitals have gone to, so be prepared, you will
see it sooner or later if you haven't already. Just answer "No" across th eboard and hand it back.

True.

When I visit my dentist, I nudge him each time to go for his LTC. His Son-in-law is NYPD and he's told me that he's shot with him a few times and "really should get his LTC". He's a big time fly fisherman as well. He pointed me to an oral surgeon that was a great guy (now retired) who grew up hunting and was a big 2A guy.

My PCP (who no longer impresses me, but I can get an appointment within a day every time I need to) knows that I served on the PD, knows that I'm a firearms instructor and his former office manager had shooting pictures on the wall where she worked (her two Sons went in the military and were shooters). We still don't fill it out on the questionnaire however.

I worry less about the Federal agent than I do about such info getting into MIB with insurance companies having access to it so they can declare you uninsurable.

I got a tablet like that at a specialist and I refused to fill it out. I told the lady I'm here to see a doctor about a specific organ and am not playing 20 questions about my mental health. She gave me a look but I just quickly said, tell me now if this is a problem and I'll find another doctor.

There was nothing about guns on it but tons of crap about depression. This was for a ****ing liver specialist.

You have to wonder how much $ all this extra stuff adds to the cost of health care.

I hadnt been to a doctor other than visits to the ER for I dunno, about 20 years. My wife made me go to hers last year shortly after my daughter was born. I responded why yes I do have guns in the house, mainly to judge her reaction. She didnt bat an eye, then asked how they were stored. I just said "properly" and made her ask if they were in a safe. Shes cute, so she will do.

I look forward to being asked if I feel safe, I'll have some fun with that one. I always ask my FIL if he feels safe whenever the opportunity arises.

I'm not white, and I got the exact same treatment when my wife went in to deliver. They had me go "sign in" and get a wrist band at the desk, just so they could get a chance to ask her if I should be kicked out.

well, i guess nowadays, they want to make sure the father of the baby is in the room with her during the delivery....instead of just her husband.... [grin]

If your doctor ask if you have guns in the home just point out that more people die because of medical errors due to doctors than people getting killed by a gun.
