Okay...."A Day at the Races" - Marx Brothers....late 1930's (iirc - 1937 or 193eight (if I put an eight in, I get the cool face. [lol] )
 
Sounds like Dr Hugo Z. Hackenbush to me. A Day at the Races. One of his other great lines from that one was when the girl is telling him to hold her closer, and he replies, :If I hold you any closer, I'll be in back of you."
