"... a former corrections officer, licensed to carry the spray..."

And so good that a Herald writer (unintentionally but nevertheless) plants the thought into the minds of the sheep that you still need a "license to carry" pepper spray.
Seems 80 to 90 percent of the people you talk to in MA still think you need to be licensed. And no wonder, since the ma.gov never went out of their way to inform the citizenry, especially women, that you don't necessarily have to submit to being attacked/mugged/raped without some form of defense, like pepper spray. I'd be willing to bet if you stopped 100 people in passing on the green line and asked them about pepper spray, most would reply "but you need a license for that"..

But, of course, if MA.gov were to change course again and suddenly make it illegal to carry pepper spray, they'd plaster ads, billboards and advisories all over the subways and media with a warning to the sheep telling them what the severe penalties and fines are for carrying a condiment without "proper license".

Meanwhile, the girl in the story will probably think twice before she "takes in" to her home (and business) an ex-con from a halfway house...
