IMPORTANT NOTICE for all gunowners House Bill H2259

Thanks for the reminder. I just called my State rep to encourage him to support this bill. He leans a wee bit to the left so we'll see... But if he doesn't hear my call for his support of this bill, what is the chance he'll even consider supporting it? Probably NONE!

I sent my letter to GOAL a couple of weeks ago.

Update

I just spent 35 minutes on the phone with my State rep and went over the bill with him. We talked through several sections of the bill and I shared my thoughts with him. He admitted that the '96 (?) bill has been a total nightmare and needs to be re-worked from top to bottom. He promised to get in touch with George Peterson, author of this bill to find out where things stood and get back with me.

Bottom line, if I had not been reminded by you guys, and taken the time to call, he may not have given the bill much if any attention.

Make time - call your rep/senator today!

Here's the reply from my State Rep, Katherine Clark, requesting her support on this issue. Pretty much a 'thanks for writing but nobody cares what you think'

Dear MA_Shooter,

Thank you for contacting me with your support for House Bill 2259, An Act relative to civil rights and public safety. I wanted to provide you an update on where the bill stands in the legislative process.

H.2259 has been assigned to the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security. Although a hearing date has not yet been assigned for this bill, it is my understanding that members of the committee should be hearing testimony on this bill in December. I encourage you to attend the hearing or to submit written testimony to the committee to ensure the committee understands your reasons for supporting this piece of legislation. You can find the committee’s contact information here: http://www.mass.gov/legis/comm/j22.htm. Attached to this e-mail, please find a copy of the bill summary If H.2259 comes before me, I will be sure to keep your opinion in mind as I review the bill.

Thank you again for contacting me on this issue. Please do not hesitate to do so again with any other questions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

State Representative Katherine Clark

Just sent an email to my Senator, Stephen Buoniconti, who is on the joint committee. We'll see what he says.

Is GOAL still accepting letters? Was going to send info on the bill to some folks and encourage them to not only write their reps, but also send their letters to GOAL, but it looks like the contact info for that has been removed.

Be sure to ask, "Hey, what are all you guys on the 'joint committee' doing, smoking joints or what?" That ought to get some attention. Be sure to remind your Representative that you have a machete, and know how to use it.

Trust me on this.

Yes we are still accepting letters! Please send them, we still do not have a scheduled hearing for this as of this writing, and we need more letters!

Thanks!

I want to send something to our club newsletter. Could you please post here a few official words from GOAL to publish? Otherwise, I will try to put something together using the first post. Thanks.

Thanks Coyote,

Here is a sample. It is best if people can write a more personal note (it doesn't have to be long) stating how the laws have affected them.

Please be sure to address the letter as the sample states. Thanks!

Your name and address here.

The Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security
Senator James Timilty and Representative Michael Costello
Room 167 State House
Boston, MA 02133

Chairman Timilty and Chairman Costello:

I am writing to ask you to support H 2259 “An Act Relative to Civil Rights and Public Safety”.

In 1998, Massachusetts legislators and Governor Paul Cellucci passed legislation that was billed as the one of the toughest gun control laws in the country. The act's sponsor, Senator Cheryl Jacques (D-Needham) asserted, “This legislation will give Massachusetts the toughest gun control law in the country.” However since the law was passed, firearm-related crime has increased dramatically. According to the Massachusetts-based Gun Owner’s Action League, firearm-related deaths have increased by 68% and firearm-related assault injuries have increased by 72%. Emergency room visits as a result of firearm-related assaults have surged by an incredible 222%. Predictably, the number of peaceable, law-abiding citizens that call Massachusetts home has plummeted.

Needless to say, the Gun Control Act of 1998 has been a miserable failure.

In view of this, the answer clearly isn’t enacting more laws to hamstring the peaceable gun owners of Massachusetts. Our legislative efforts ought to be focused on enacting laws that protect the citizens’ right to own firearms and punish violent and dangerous criminal offenders.

As an active voter and GOAL member, I encourage you to support H 2259.

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

I'm curious about just who these "peaceable gun owners" are. Maybe "pissed off gun owners" need to find their voice. To say that the "Gun Control Act" is a miserable failure is to give too much credence to "gun control".

Let's tell these socialistic rat bastards to stop "controlling" stuff. Or else. Of course, in a "may issue" state, that could be a risky proposition. Unless you intend that the first blow falls hard.

I'm sorry. It just sounds to me like a lot of cowtowing to people who are sworn to take our freedoms away no matter what. Will we ever roll back gun restrictions in Massachusetts through legislative action? What are the odds, really?

Fixed it for you.

This is exactly why we need to fight tooth and nail and not give an inch.

We will need massive support for this when discussions begin in January.

Hoping that all of you reading this will be there, for yourselves, for us, for the Constitution.

Called my guy
not sure how it was received tho
he's a dumocrat so we know how he will go

You've got to give him a chance ... my democrat state senator has an A+ GOAL rating and is a co-sponsor of the bill. If we're depending only on Republican votes to pass this bill, there's going to be a very long wait ...

CALLING ALL RESIDENTS OF MEDFORD!

I recently spoke to all of the respresentatives in Medford, MA and apparently NONE of them were aware of this bill. Most seemed receptive to several key points in the bill. Please call your representative and let them know about the bill and how important it is to you. Thank you

I wrote to Rep. Carl Sciortino a couple of months ago and got a response. He stated that he has not read the bill, but will. So, he should be aware of it. I have not written to Sen Jahlen yet because this is a house bill.

Okay, so I just got off the phone with Senator Patricia Jehlen. She said she has never heard of H.2259 and has no experience on gun legislation. I think it is important we contact her office and make our voices heard.

I think this is a bill started in the House and is still in committee there. If that's the case, I don't think it would be on the Senate "radar" until it passes in the House first. I will call/write to Senator Jahlen WHEN it makes it over there.

For now, I am writing a letter, in my own words, to the Chairman of the committee in support.

The letters are starting to accumulate! Here's GOAL Staffer Angela Fisher holding a stack of letters in support of H. 2259!

Please keep them coming, if you haven't had a chance to do so yet, we need it, every voice counts!

Thanks!

I sent two letters, one to GOAL and another to Carl Sciortino.

Got a response back from Sciortino a while ago:

"Dear Mr. XXX

Thank you for your letter regarding H.2259. I appreciate your advocacy on behalf of responsible gun owners in Massachusetts.

I have reviewed the legislation you're asking for my support of. I can tell you it is something that I am open to and am continuing to learn more about. It is a fairly complex bill addressing many different aspects of the law, so I only hesitate to say I would endorse it in its entirety. I have recently been spending some time learning more about MA gun control laws, as well as the licensure process we have in this state.

This bill is in the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, which I am not a member of, but I thought it was important to try to understand some of the problems faced by responsible gun owners that I've been hearing about. I also had the opportunity to go with another constituent to a shooting range, and to meet with other gun owners to help me understand how our current laws are working. As this and related bills come before the full House, I will keep your comments and those of other constituents in mind.

Thank you again for your thoughtful letter regarding state gun laws. if you have further questions or is there is ever any way I can be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me. "

Sounded promising anyway. It wasn't a direct slap in the face/form letter.

Maybe we can get Carl Sciortino and some of his colleagues to come down and visit one of the clubs; maybe GOAL can help. We can show them what we are all about. Have it be more of a reception rather than a town hall format. Some face-to-face with these Dems in the House can only help.

I just drafted a letter for the committee. Should I send a copy to GOAL as well?

Sounds like a reasonable plan. Maybe have a session where we all actually sit down with them and physically read the bill with them and discuss it paragraph for paragraph.

Here's what I got back. It certainly looks promising.

Mr. <Lupis42>,

Firstly, please accept my sincerest apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I can ensure you that it will not happen again. I have looked at H2259 and it seems like a reasonable piece of legislation to me. Also, I greatly admire Representative Peterson and have actually signed on to several of his pieces of legislation for this session, some for this particular issue. The bill you refer to has been assigned to the Joint Committee on Public Safety and homeland security but has not yet had a hearing. I will absolutely keep on top of this issue and give the bill every consideration should it come before me for a vote.

Thank you for contacting me and again, please accept my apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Sincerely,

Now to get him to commit to putting his name on it! Just looked him up: He's on the house "Ways and Means Committee".

Got a call from Senator Mike Moore today asking for support of Martha Coakley. He was great towards us up to this point, now I don't know what to think.

I am willing to help the cause in any way that I can. The past couple of days I've been trying to get in touch with Jim and Angela, but have received no response. It's probably best to coordinate any larger attempts through GOAL.
