If anyone's bored and wants to bog down the NZ firearm return system

I wonder how many NZ gun owners are really in possession of semiautos. Farmers probably use bolt-action .22 rimfire rifles and 12 gauge pump or double barrel shotguns. These folks do not have the gun culture that we have here in the United States. Only a small percentage of all Australian privately-owned guns were subjected to the gun grab of 1996-1997. Most of the sportsmen and farmers there were practical. An inexpensive scoped bolt-action .223 will flatten a coyote or dingo just as efficiently as an AR at much less cost.

Update and information on firearm hand-ins

Since Police set up the 0800 number dedicated to the changes to firearms yesterday afternoon, 474 calls were received by 11am.

The highest number of calls received in one hour is 127.

More than a thousand people have notified Police using the online form that they wish to hand in their firearm. This form can be used for firearms which are affected by the changes announced yesterday, or any other firearm, and is available on the Police website.

Unfortunately, some people have decided it is a good use of their time to misuse the form and submit “fake” notifications to hand in weapons. While these individuals may be short of productive work to do, Police are not. In the current environment this is unacceptable. These vexatious forms are a huge waste of Police time and resources which could be put to better use.

Police are seething as the new firearms laws bring with it a host of not-so-funny practical jokers.

Some members of the public are clearly unhappy about the law change, which bans military style semi-automatic firearms and asks for anyone in possession of such a weapon to hand it in to police.

"Some people have decided it is a good use of their time to misuse the form and submit 'fake' notifications to hand in weapons," said Assistant Commissioner Tusha Penny in a statement.

"While these individuals may be short of productive work to do, police are not. In the current environment this is unacceptable," she continued.

"These vexatious forms are a huge waste of police time and resources which could be put to better use."

Be safe when turning them in.

One of the comments are interesting. They question how the NZ Gov't was able to turn up a confiscation web site in less then 24 hrs after confiscation was announced. Seems pretty quick and pretty much something they had probably been working on for quite some time.

Nope. You can create a survey like that using Google Forms in just a few minutes. I’m sure you can do something similar using other services.
