Get your butt to Boston - GOAL Super Alert - Wed 28th!!!!

I was very rewarding not being totally outnumbered during this committee hearing. Actual body's in strategic locations is key.

When they throw out almost 70 potential bills to discuss, and then only give each citizen 3 minutes to speak, it can be disorganized at best.

I agree. I think our Opposition, if they took away anything from the hearing, understands that we will not go down without a strong, legal fight.

The prime seating was in A2. With a full house,
if there'd been a queue the "average" person
would still have had a 50/50 chance of ending up in A1.

Now if there'd been a queue, and if the word went out to Pro2A forces
to line right up, then we could have skewed the seating.

But my rhetoric above was non-mathematical...).

Speaking of Deval, I read today that back in June 2019, his former brother in law was convicted for rape. In the story it said that Deval had fired the head of the sex offender registry when he approached Deval about adding his brother in law to the registry. His brother in law was previously convicted for rape back in the 90's.

I'll tell you this. If we do Our Part, they'll have to have the Hearing in the Gardner Auditorium, not that sweaty little A1/A2...

yup. Deval Patrick’s brother-in-law found guilty in kidnapping, rape case – Boston Herald

Trial Judge Robert C. Cosgrove has set sentencing for June 24. Sigh faces up to 20 years in state prison for the rape conviction and a minimum mandatory sentence of one year for his conviction on stalking in violation of the restraining order.

The case threw a spotlight on Sigh’s criminal history — he was convicted in 1993 in California of raping his wife, Patrick’s sister — and his ties to the governor, who was accused of retaliating against state employees who later sought to have Sigh register as a sex offender.

The Dec. 9 attack was “very similar,” police said, to the circumstances surrounding the California rape, a longtime source of controversy that re-emerged in 2014, when Patrick fired the head of the Sex Offender Registry Board after she pushed to classify Sigh as a sex offender.

Is Michael Moore the Chairman of the committee holding this? Was it a Senate committee, or combined?

What, if anything, did Mr. Moore have to say during this? We have a club of 1000+ who are interested voters. They, along with other area clubs, could swing an election one way or another for him.

A big thank-you to all who attended. Especially if you got up to speak and made a cogent, on-point argument. I couldn't go because I was working.

Sorry AHM, but Senator Moore is Chairman according to: https://malegislature.gov/Committees/Detail/J22/Members

I live in Leicester and he is my State Senator. I'm a fan. He will listen to our cause. Not sure of his GOAL ranking, but with my limited personal contact with him, we were both respectful, maintained good eye contact, respected each others time, and listened to each other.

Look at the page you linked.
It lists two "Chair"s.
Not one "Chair", and one "<something not spelled C-h-a-i-r>".

Presumably because it's a Joint Committee -
a committee whose members come from two distinct co-equal legislative bodies.

One Chair is "Michael O. Moore".
One Chair is not.

I've read that joint Congressional committees may have a single chair,
which periodically swaps between Reps and Senators
.
Other joint Congressional committees may have two co-chairs,
one from each party (but each potentially from either House or Senate)
.

It looks like Mass. is different from either of those setups.
I looked at another half dozen Joint Committees in the Mass. State House.
They are all structured that way.

Oregon and Wisconsin use co-chairs.
I didn't look to see whether it was split by House/Senate or Majority/Minority.

@Coyote33 asked, "Is Michael Moore the Chairman of the committee holding this?"
(Unbeknownst to him), it sure seems that's like asking, "Is Atlantic the Ocean of Earth?".

Coyote33 Sen. Moore has done some outstanding work for his constituents and remains the only member of the MA legislature to host a gun safety day at a club in his district. GOAL provides the instructors for this and Jon Green attends annually.

However, he has made some disappointing statements lately regarding ownership of certain types of firearms and called for a ban on scary black rifles. If he is your state senator, I would go have a talk with him about this and I would encourage you to bring friends from your club.

While this thread is still active I want to thank the members of the Massachusetts Women Gun Owners group that testified before the committee.

Their commitment to maintaining this civil liberty is always an outstanding example.

:emoji_tiger:

I just passed your appreciation on to one of the women who testified

I don't quite understand what you are saying. He is either the chairman or not, or maybe co-chairman, or not.

I know, Mike. I've been instructing at his events for maybe 10 years now at our club. Please feel free to ask Jon.

Also know this. Our club had him come in and speak. Most were not impressed with what they heard. We also heard that GOAL may be or is discontinuing their affiliation with him on these, or him with them. In any event, it was also said that he has a web page where he is listing all the "Democrat talking points". I have not seen that myself as of the time of writing this reply.

(It's not that you asked an unreasonable question.
It's just that the correct answer off of the State House's own web site is:
"he's one of the two co-chairmen" -
not "he's the chairman" (nor "he's not the chairman")).

Moore and Naughton (sp) co-chair

This. While they are not 100% described as co-chairs on their web page of https://malegislature.gov/Committees/Detail/J22/Members. Moore is the Senate side chair and Naughton is the House side chair. To my way of thinking, that is a co-chairmanship, but this Massachusetts where "logic" is "four-letter" word (yes I'm being sarcastic and know it is five letters.

Moore's details says he is "chairperson": https://malegislature.gov/Legislators/Profile/MOM0/Committees

Naughton's details says he is "chairperson": https://malegislature.gov/Legislators/Profile/HPN1/Committees

Well, they are together yet separate.

From his website:

Senator Moore is a strong advocate for the rights of legal gun owners, and is endorsed by the Massachusetts-based Gun Owners Action League. During the previous session, he worked hard to protect second amendment rights while enhancing the public safety mechanisms designed to maintain public safety.

Hmm...

With friends like these...

I hope GOAL pulls its endorsement of him, because right now he’s running around saying GOAL supports him as he’s calling for a renewal of the AWB. Makes us all look pretty stupid.

I know you’re saying we should call him, Mike S, but has GOAL itself called him and threatened to put out a news release removing his endorsement if he doesn’t realize his mistakes?

I'm thinking I have to re-evaluate my opinion of my Senator. Thanks to the NES'rs who dug deeper into his stance and sharing. While, not really surprised, I'd say more (no pun) disappointed.

Jay

You are correct not to be surprised. A lot of politicians have finally figured out that gunowners, as a group, are some of the laziest, most apathetic voters out there. More potheads show up on Boston Common for their weed rallies than have ever showed for a pro-gun rally. I've done some volunteering/informal advising for a former Republican MA State Rep. A lot of times he would receive just a small handful of calls/emails/letters from constituents when anti-gun bills would come up. On two or three different occasions I tried getting enough people for a pro-gun fundraiser/meet your rep night and got nothing but crickets.

We can beat our chest sand scream "muh rights!" but unless gunowners can get organized and start throwing these politicians out on their asses on election day we simply won't figure in the political calculus.
