changing gun trends

As previously posted the expiration of the AWB and the explosion of the AR platform was Hugh. To me the biggest change that followed was the ability to customize the AR platform to suit whatever you wanted that came afterwards. You could literally “have it your way”. (Prior to the AWB I had a 16” standard barrel Colt and a Hbar colt. Both stock configurations)

Similarly the two stocks ( youth and standard) on bolt guns went away. For short money you could get a Boyd’s laminate stock. Get what you want. Now
chassis systems with full adjustability and AICS mags

The widespread acceptance of plastic guns surprises me. I'm fine with it: they're not for me, but their runaway success has impressed me. Who knew that all you had to do was replace "plastic" with "polymer" to make people feel great about it?

Also, I got into guns during the AWB. As a guy who used to carry an M4 around, the commercial success of the AR since 2004 surprises me. When I wanted to get an M16 analog to practice with, I had to buy an M1 carbine.

The trend I like least is the rise in the prices of milsurps, especially SMLEs. Grrr.
I think for an IWB carry piece polymer makes sense. It is easier to maintain and lighter.

I don't like the look or feel, but a carry piece doesn't need to look cute, it needs to do its job reliably.

For a decade I carried a PPS, the one with paddle mag release. Probably one of the ugliest guns, but very reliable.

I just hate that polymer started expanding to everything, even to full size guns. It is ugly AF.

But you can get the punisher logo laser engraved to show how bad a** you are. [rofl]

It's all gone downhill since Remington stopped making the 1858.

Superior to Clock

I'm in the camp of surprised there has not been more innovation. "Ooh, let's change the molds on our plastic striker-fired and add some fabulous accessories! Yeah, that's NEW and REVOLUTIONARY!" Rinse repeat. Yes I have a pile of Glocks and like them for what they are- a decent utility gun that goes bang every time. However, in the end you can play Barbie dress up all you want with Glocks, Shields, etc. but it's still a striker-fired pistol with a shitty trigger. There's nothing a Taran Tactical can do that I can't do with a barrel swap, decent trigger kit, a 'minus' connecter, some springs, and a little Blue Magic metal polish. Could probably skip the barrel swap too.

I find the proliferation of 9mm curious. I like 9mm for the sub-compacts and paper punching games, but the 9mm is best for self defense apologists have started to make me throw up in my mouth a little every time I hear the same old BS. I will agree it is best for compact carry, but if I need to turn the lights out on a bad guy there are other choices. What's better to turn the lights out, assuming both rounds are going to get 14" penetration in ballistic gel? A 1" hole made by an expanded 230 grain projectile that dumps 460 ft lbs of energy or a 5/8" hole made by an expanded 124 grain projectile dumping 400 ft lbs of energy?

I really don't get the all or nothing arguments around the pistol caliber wars. I like 9mm for subcompact carry, 45 for concealed carry, and 10mm for home defense including vehicle as a 'home' in states where that is legal.

I do like the resurgence of 10mm in the last few years.

Also I like the PRS games and rifles trend, including the 22LR platforms.

I've also noticed more people just getting into guns now gravitating towards small, fancy featured subcompacts for their first gun. Don't think it's the wisest choice but concealment seems to be the primary focus.
I learned something about that from a Women On Target attendee I was instructing. Cute as shit, petite little gal who had never fired a gun in her life- not even BB guns nor Airsoft. She had already been given the usual speech that smaller can be harder to control, bigger kick, etc. but she really wanted to try my G43. Despite some literal shaking before the first shot, every single shot she fired was center of mass and she was mag dump gung-ho by the end of the session. Made me wonder who TF was turning our target frames into splinters when a 100% newb with a G43 can hold center of mass.

Agreed those are beautiful examples of mechanical art, but be careful you will turn this into a cyclist hater thread LOL. Oh, too late...

I've noticed a huge increase in people carrying with optics and lights over the last couple of years.
I’m old and have a hard tme focusing on iron sights these days. Ive got a red dot on my Glock 19. Lights have become much smaller and more powerful. I now keep a Streamlight tlr7a on my Glock. Unlike my Surefire x300, the tlr7a doesn’t extend past the barrel, so it doesn’t add much bulk.

At the last range I worked with and helped with target frames for.... It was always some dude in late 40's with a shiny . 357 Magnum. Or hunters with . 30-06's shooting at beer cans in the middle of the night. (they would setup cans on the target frame. )

I still kinda want to shoot one. The low axis seems wild.
Yeah, but why all the extra metal? Shed some pounds, then call us back again later.

9mm becoming the most prevalent round
I think it has been since the Army adopted it, plus the "wonder 9" years of late 80's. What do YOU think was the "most prevalent round" before then?

Against getting rid of nfa. Same as daniel defense.

S&W was the only one to give a semi positive answer back.
So is S&W the only gun you will buy for now on? Is that what you suggest for everyone?

This trend has led to yet another, which is the explosion of hunting calibers built specifically for use in the AR and how that is now replacing the venerable bolt action .30 calibers that have been the center of the hunting market for the better part of the last 70 years.
I think a .223 would be great for hunting coyotes. I also think being seen walking into or in the woods with an AR will get the police on you pretty darned quick. Wood stocks are not as scary for most people, unfortunately.

@Coyote33 I realize 9 was adopted due to NATO , but for a while in the civilian world .40 was all the rage, and it has from where I am sitting, been kicked to the curb like a hooker after a policeman's convention.

We can go back a lot of years when 32 Special was the common round for handgun, then 38 Special came along and all but killed 32

9 was huge because of Glock's arrival in the late 80's, but then every PD in the country ( almost) went to 40 Short & Weak.... how many ex Detroit PD glocks were dumped on the market when they changed to S$W M&P 40's..... thousands of them

Lots of departments have transitioned back to 9's, and folks like MSP are carrying M&P45's iirc

It's the wrong stroke/bore ratio, redline is too low, put that crank in the 350 block and then you are GTG
a 400 crank with the correct flex plate in a 350 block is a much better setup than a 350 crank in a 400 block.

Similar displacements but the bore/stroke ratio works better with the 350, besides there are millions of 350 blocks out there, 400's are not as easy to find and IMHO the cooling on them sucks

I appreciate 9mm because it's cheap, but if it were the 90s again with the magazine capacities in place, I'd opt for .40 too, not just for more power in a 9mm sized gun, but because I would also own a full size 10mm meaning the bullets for reloading are the same. I could have the compact Glock 19/23 in .40, then the full size Glock 40 MOS in 10mm, which also shoots .40 just fine.

Of course, we didn't know this shit in the 90s because the internet was not like it is today and suggesting shooting .40 in a 10mm would have gotten you laughed off a forum, but Youtube has disproven a lot of clowns talking out their ass.

I dont get all the pent up hate for .40
Went to the range this morning for some practice. Had the place to myself!
Because of this thread i brought the G27 along to blow the cobwebs out. Still a great gun. A box of blazer brass and a box of fed hi shock later im still happy.
Yes the web of my hand is a bit bit beat up as usual. Not as forgiving as the 1911 in .45 for sure. One day ill have to try this new 9mm fad. The ammo is priced a little better for sure.

So is S&W the only gun you will buy for now on? Is that what you suggest for everyone?
Nope. S&W options do nothing for me. Not a fan.

Not suggesting for everyone. My personal choice.
Just like i wont buy daniel defense.

Or
Aero
Ballistic advantage
Wilson combat
Palmetto state armory

Because they wont ship to Massachusetts.
Personal choice.
Do what you want with your money.
Ill do what i want with mine

The biggest thing in the past decade is the non enthuiast enthusiastic gun buyer, lmao. New gun owners post 2013 gun are a completely different breed than the previous decades. Before 2013 you had "people who liked guns" and "new hunters" or "both". Nowadays 80% of new gun owners are OMGWTFINEEDAGUN before they ban them all!" or "i needagun cuz zombies/defense fear porn made me". Etc.

Two wholly different ballgames between eras. The new omgwtf guys are also the ones that bought clunkers like mosin and sks, overpaid, and drove the prices up.... 🤣
