Had to dial 911 again last night at 1AM.
Two cars pull up in the VFW parking lot across from my house and 8 kids pile out yelling and start fighting...so I called.
Three Billerica PD cruisers were there inside 60 seconds, some of the kids ran off and I doubt they got caught but Billerica PD did take one of the drivers, The Middlesex County sherrifs office also drove through and observed and searched.
Respect for the Billerica PD and MSO. I don't see how they could have responded any faster.
yay from me [smile]
I'm tired of loosing sleep to these punks.

Always found it odd. Up here in the NE the Sheriff's office seem to be Prisoner escort and baby sitting only. Down South (Florida) The Sheriffs Office seems to be the front running LE agency. Just an observation.

+1 for Billerica PD, glad to hear someone has a positive interaction with PD every once in a while.

As for the MSO.... maybe they figured they'd help - how close are you to BHoC? Could have been they went to find the "closest" dunks and then wanted to see if they could backup the bpd?

What was the MSO looking for? Trash by the side of the road?

unfortunately one of the BPD cars swung it's spotlight on it's way in and that scattered the kids. It looked like the MSO car was going through the neighborhood with it's spotlight looking for the escapees.
All in all I thought four cars was a good response considering how busy Saturday nights are.

The prison is on the other side of town but the training center is in my neighborhood (the old Ditson elementary school)

were they escapees or hoodlums? or unknown? if bhoc had a "break" or had to go "pick someone up" that very well might explain their presence, to make sure homie g wasn't one of theirs...

If you have a few minutes, send the chief a note thanking the PD for the fast response. It is my impression that police work is typically a thankless job. An attaboy now and then would likely be very welcome.

I am not surprised...this is how it is supposed to be.....If this thread was about how they screwed up it would have been ten pages by now!![laugh]

Good for the BPD

I'm not so sure about having MSO involved. Next thing they will be doing traffic stops.

MA is actually probably more unique in its utilization of Sheriff's Departments. In other states, Sheriff's Depts. and County Police are often the main local law enforcement arm, with town PDs secondary and the staties sticking to their highways.

Don't sheriffs in other states usually cover unincorporated areas? Mass has none of that space left. Might be a reason why the sheriffs in MA lost their power.

I noticed that most other states use their Sheriff as the main LE, except for in bigger cities. Massachusetts HAS to be different. [wink]

Billerica PD are a pretty good bunch of guys.

Sheriff's Dept powers............

............can vary dramatically from state to state. Some have little power, some are the primary LEO's county-wide (regardless of incorporation) and many fall in-between in such areas as you mention. Around Massachusetts, the Sheriff's were the primary LEO's until the 20th century. At that time, police departments began springing up in local communities under the control of the individual cities and towns. It had nothing to do with a lack of protection, but rather was a means of politically controlling the LEO function locally and not at the county level.

It also provided the local politicians with patronage slots that had heretofor been the exclusive domain of the county level politicians (and what good pol in Mass doesn't want to control some patronage slots). The political control of public safety and the associated patronage got so bad in this state that it had a direct bearing on the ultimate institution of Civil Service starting in the 1930's and accellerating through the 40's and 50's.

Not all departments sprang up as separate entities from the Sheriff's. In the case of Boston, it appears that at some point in the 1850's or 1860's, they merely renamed the department from the Boston Sheriff's Office to the Boston Police Department. I have heard it said that this name change was designed to conjure up an image of the London "bobby".

I agree on the letter to the chief at BPD.

The MSO is begging to be involved with police work in this state. Under title of Sheriff they were able to get all that fancy new gear from Homeland Defense. They are now better equipped than most towns. Now all they have to do is have a reason to use it. I'm well aware of how other states work the SO. In Mass I just don't see the need unless you want to give up control of local PD's. FWIW I'm NOT in favor of this.

I disagree. I'd rather have a Sheriff's office that is outside of the influence and control of the towns, with an elected Sheriff and an alternate point for licensing.

Unfortunately, in recent years MA sheriff's departments have not exactly covered themselves in glory -- patronage, questionable purchasing policies, retribution towards deputies who didn't support the sheriff's campaign, etc.

I had an incedent that required me to file a report with the billerica pd in 2005 (regarding some stolen musical instruments) I dealt with Det. Casey. What a great, stand-up guy. Det Casey just happened to be my CCD teacher in high school, when he was one of the Motorcycle Officers in town, and he is a down to earth, and Funny guy who sincerely makes you feel like the only case he is working on when you talk to him. I wanted to give him a shout out, and to say thanks for getting my guitars back to me!

I did send a message via the "contact me" form on the BPD website (which I've done on previous occasions)...who knows if they read it.

One thing I would like to say is that if they had been more stealthy about their arrival, the number of LEO's that did arrive may have had their hands full. The 911 dispatcher specifically asked how many kids were there and I said two cars with eight kids.
So of course the hard cases run and get away leaving the turkeys for the police to deal with. which is fine BUT at least two of the kids that ran were from two houses down from me where all the drugs are being dealt (also known to BPD). I realize there's probably an ongoing investigation on the drug dealing but by the same token I'd like to get that problem solved and not have to deal with it because I think it's ultimately the root cause of all the crap going on in the neighborhood. I'm more than happy with the BPD otherwise..
