It seems like every spring the anti-civil rights crowd gets creative in the manner in which they attack their fellow citizens who want to exercise their Second Amendment rights. These attacks take place at the local level every year at town meetings, city councils, etc. They are always well coordinated and represent a new tactic each year.

This year these groups seem to have borrowed a page from Governor Charlie Baker’s playbook and are attacking small business owners. We all vividly remember when the federal government released its COVID guidelines for essential businesses; it included the reopening of firearm retailers and shooting ranges as essential to civil rights. Within hours of the State releasing the document, the Baker team amended it to intentionally shut down firearm retailers and ranges. It took federal court action to block that effort and ensure that, even during a pandemic, citizens could enjoy the rights afforded to them in the United States Constitution.

Recently, a small business-person in the City of Newton was preparing to open a firearm retail store. By all accounts, he was working with the local government and police to ensure he was properly following the processes the City requires. Everything was fine until a local group of anti-civil rights folks got involved. Their tactic … new zoning ordinances specifically designed and timed to essentially outlaw firearm retailers in the community.

In a recent story by CBS Boston* local residents were quoted saying:

“This is a densely populated community with young children and families that live around here so we don’t think it’s safe to put a gun shop here.”

“Where there are gun stores there are going to be areas around them that have more gun violence, there is data out there that shows about you know what happens in proximity to gun stores.”

One City Councilor even stated the intentions of City Officials to destroy a small business trying to open in their City saying that they: “promise[d] that Newton’s elected leaders will now mount an effort to shut down Newton Firearms.”

“The bigotry oozing from these statements is simply unconscionable”, said Jim Wallace Executive Director of GOAL. “The blatantly false accusations and narratives being thrown at the 2A community by these people would never stand in that city if they were directed at any other group of lawful citizens. While we respect a city’s authority to produce legitimate zoning ordinances, Newton’s leadership should publicly recognize this effort for what it truly is and put an end to it.”

The potential store owner’s attorney is quoted as addressing the matter: "It is outrageous that politicians are manipulating zoning laws for political gain. I will continue to fight for my client, and other law-abiding citizens who are being subject to this kind of self-serving, unethical political show," said Attorney Jason A. Guida.

The Newton City Council’s Zoning and Planning Committee will be holding a virtual public hearing on May 10th at 7PM to discuss the proposed zoning change and likely move it to a vote by the full Council. The text of the proposed ordinance, hearing notice, Zoom link for the meeting, and other materials can be found at this link:

Good to see @GOAL getting involved, and that Jason Guida's on the team, but we have a thread going, maybe they can get combined?

Both the state and local governments are sensitive to lawsuits. We saw how quickly Charlie caved during the lockdown when sued. Local governments don't have a lot of legal contingency in their budgets. Make them feel the pain of legal expenses, As the FPC likes to say, "Lawsuit printer goes brrrr."

Thus proving that 87.4% of all statistics are made up. I challenge anyone to show me that crime has gone up in proximity to The Mill in Littleton where almost 70 federally licensed dealers exist. I suspect we can find evidence to the contrary. Or if I was the quoted Newton resident "There is data out there that shows that crimes goes DOWN near gun stores since everyone is smart enough to not commit crime around known armed citizens"

That line was ridiculous, but she knew what she was doing. Tossing unfounded lies out there because no one was going to immediately call her out on the quote. Totally premeditated hit job of a quote meant to stoke absurd fears in the neighborhood.

What she was really doing to going against this proposed store because she has a listing less than a mile away at 217 Harvard Circle and is concerned what impact it might have on her asking price. She doesn't give a sh*t about this other than her commission line.

Only thing I’ve seen happening outside of gun stores are friendly nods and civilized “good mornings”.

The best thing to do with Massachusetts (and Connecticut): LEAVE.
And take your tax-dollars-generating business with you.
that's what they want, folks on the other side of their opinions to leave. another victory for their side! we piss and moan constantly but give up awful easy.

You're NOT going to win. They've not only gathered the numbers but changed the rules such that they're unstoppable. The best we can do is regroup where we have sufficient numbers to put up an adequate fight... and even in those places it'll be dicey.

Remember who the enemy is, and what their bank accounts look like:

I won't win but I won't quit. but I do hear what you're saying mr. critter and honestly, you're correct. our little victories really don't matter besides being a pain in the ass to the socialist democrats. us old timers will remain behind and continue with the resistance.
Sometimes it's better to fall back and regroup.

We're facing a Big. Nasty. Enemy. One that's INTERNATIONAL in scope and backed by wealth equivalent of TRILLIONS of dollars.

They know what they want to accomplish, and have a pretty good idea how to do it. Their generals include some decidedly un-stupid people (e.g. Gates), and have allies in some demonstrably powerful organizations (the Chinese Communist Party, the World Economic Forum, Brussels, our Swamp, ...)

While most people in this country don't even understand the scope of this war, or that it's a WORLD war.

I'm sure some are but its more to do with the fact that most are conveniently incomplete. Violent crime statistics are typically cherry picked to support one argument or another. The fact remains that it is virtually impossible to prove a direct cause and effect relation to violent crime in either direction as it relates to specific circumstances like a gun shop being responsible for a spike in gun related crime. Its all just mental gymnastics used by control freaks to spread fear amongst the insanely gullible and stupid population of this country.

It always strikes me as odd that in the state where the American revolution began, where liberty rang loudly and where citizens gave their lives for the freedoms we have, that most of the current populace is nothing but a bunch of sheep. Some day, and it may be sooner than later, those same idiots will be trying to find a firearm to defend themselves against tyranny!

You may have missed the point of my quote I think. Engage humor. I picked a totally random number and then said that random number% of statistics are made up (which my random number clearly was) Department of Redundancy Department type humor

After 24 yrs in LE, with literally thousands of arrests in my career, violent, throw down knock out fights to take them down, many of them involving firearms, stabbings, gangs, drugs, kicking in doors on MS-13 and 18th St. gang members wanted for murder, you name it.

I have never, not once, arrested a person that was a LTC holder of this state. Not once in all that time. They are the most law abiding, polite and respectful people I’ve ever dealt with.

These people simply have no idea, zero, what they’re talking about, and can’t even stop to take a breath because gunz and white males. It’s shameful that they’re so blinded by hatred that they would try to deny a fellow citizen an opportunity to open a storefront, a 100% legally protected and honest business simply because it doesn’t fit their incredibly frail emotional state or personal needs. They’re selfish, dishonest with themselves, and have zero experience with which to stand on.

You should go to their public hearing and passionately read that post out loud, making the appropriate changes from
"they" and "these" to "you".

Smash their facade.

When I’m finally retired I may take up a more public voice on these types of hearings.
Nothing they could do to me at that point and I’d have some freedom to breathe finally.
