LAWRENCE – A Salem, N.H., man who ran out of gas in Lawrence was locked up after police found a cache of illegal weapons, including a knife, guns and ammunition in his 2008 Chevy Impala.
Luis Burgos, 31, of 16 Oakridge Ave., #20, told police he was driving his girlfriend to her Methuen home after they had just finished shooting at an unspecified gun range in New Hampshire.
He was placed under arrest and charged with multiple counts of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition after his sedan ran out of gas at Berkeley and East Haverhill streets at 8:19 p.m., according to a report by Officer Joseph Padellaro.
He was held on $25,000 cash bail after his Lawrence District Court arraignment Thursday afternoon.
Burgos allegedly had eight guns in his car, including a 12-gauge pump shotgun, a Smith & Wesson .22-caliber, a Colt .22-caliber, and a 9 mm Desert Eagle. An array of live ammunition was found in a green duffel bag in the car's trunk. Burgos was also in possession of seven unused gun locks, according Padellaro's report.
Padellaro said he was on patrol Wednesday night when he saw a car parked at the intersection of Berkeley and East Haverhill streets. The car's lights were on and it was blocking the flow of traffic, he wrote.
The officer said he'd seen the car at the intersection about 20 minutes prior but was on his way to a call and was unable to stop.
A woman, Bridget Perron, 42, was sitting in the passenger's side of the Impala. A "black knife and a hand grenade" were hanging from the rear view mirror of the car, Padellaro said. The hand grenade was a non-working replica.
Padellaro asked Perron if she had any weapons that could harm him and she replied no. But Padellaro said there were four "gun stickers" and "logos" on the car which made him suspicious.
Taking a closer look, Padellaro said he saw a plastic gun carrying case in the car, right behind the driver's seat. He immediately called for backup.
Perron was ordered out of the car and a red and black switchblade was found in her pocketbook, he wrote.
He then asked Perron if there were any more weapons in the car and she said, "Yes. In the trunk." She also told police she was unsure if Burgos, her boyfriend and the car's owner, had a valid license to carry firearms.
A Lawrence police dispatcher's check of both Massachusetts and New Hampshire revealed Burgos was not properly licensed to carry firearms, Padellaro said.
In the trunk, police found "3 long guns, in cases of different types and a green duffel bag loaded with ammo and small handguns," Padellaro wrote.
Soon after, police located Burgos walking in the Berkeley and Jackson street area carrying a red gas can. When questioned by Sgt. Jay Cerullo and Sgt. Michael Simard, Burgos "admitted to having several guns in his motor vehicle" and that he was shooting earlier at a New Hampshire gun range.
Burgos' Impala was towed from the area and he was taken to the police department where he was booked. During booking, Burgos produced paperwork showing he had purchased two of the weapons in New Hampshire, police said.
Perron was issued a summons to appear in court in the near future for illegal possession of a dangerous weapon.
Burgos is due back in court on May 5 for a pre-trial conference
