S&W Mod 19/66? Ruger GP-100? 4” or 2.5”?

OK, here’s the deal. I’ve about given up on ever being able to purchase my old Mod 19 back from my brother in NJ. I sold it to him in the early 90’s when I decided I was tired of cleaning out 6 chambers + the cylinder, and I was going to be shooting my 1911… Now, of course, I regret it. And he's about ready to sell it to me. If it weren't for the Massachusetts Asshat General...

Well, I decided to get another S&W a few years back. Picked up a 686P in stainless with a 6” barrel…. But I didn’t realize that IDPA doesn’t allow anything over 4”. And I like shooting it (even if I don’t do it too often), so I don’t want to sell it.

BUT… I’d like to be able to shoot in the SSR division for IDPA sometimes. And the S&W is too large, and my Charter Arms Off Duty .38 is only 5 shots. So… it comes down to what do I want?

One of the shooters likes his Ruger GP100; says it’s real easy to pull out the trigger group and work on it and replace the springs with aftermarket ones. But that cylinder latch is just enough different from the S&W & the Charter Arms that I’m not sure I'll be comfortable with it. I mean, I like the S&W revolvers and have spent a lot of years practicing with them.

Now… next question is barrel length. 2.5” is easy to conceal, but will have more recoil with full house magnum loads. But the 4” would be easier to keep on target for IDPA shoots. OTOH, if I’m ever going to carry this (a distinct possibility), the 2.5” would be a better choice. OTTH (On The Third Hand) I'll probably be using .38 ammo for IDPA. So the barrel length might not matter as much, except for the longer range stages.

So I’m leaning towards a used 66 with a 2.5” barrel. Anyone have any comments about this at all? I don’t have anything written in stone here (just silicon!) and would be interested in hearing discussion.

Well, Ross, Ruger does have a shady history with it's employees that ride. Check AMA for it, though it's been quite some time.

Regardless, to me it's a slam dunk.

The S&W would be my choice, especially considering that if you keep it long enough to need repair, Smith parts would probably be easier to get. A K-frame Smith is a little bulky to carry, though. One of the guns I'm considering getting is a J-Frame (5 shot). Of course, for competition, the 6 shot K-Frame would be better. Besides, my father has a K-38, rechambered to 357, and it was the first handgun I ever shot, so, yeah, I'm biased.

I can't give you much comparison info here. But I really do enjoy shooting my GP100 4". Once I get better with the speed loaders I plan on using it in an IDPA match to see how I do. Breaking it down for cleaning & working on the springs is also very easy. (Mine is still all stock though)

If I can make it to the Octoberfest shoot & if you're going to be there I'll make sure I bring it along.

Chris

Come Octoberfest, and I'll make you appreciate BOTH the Smith and the Ruger. I've got a Colt DA, 1917. If it wasn't for the collectability (which is why I bought it), it would be GONE. Big, clunky, miserable working, but then what do you expect from a WW1 Vet?

Well, Nickle, I wasn't going to worry about the company's rep, as I'll be buying used (I just checked out the prices for new S&W's - OUCH!!!). Besides, S&W is the company that caved in and bent over for Bill Klinton. So neither one is lily-white.

As for a 5-shot... well, I already have one. But you really need that sixth shot for IDPA. it seems to me that the 2.5" barrel would help make it more concealable than the 4"... even given that the cylinder is fatter.

Chris, I'll look forward to trying it... if I don't go and buy something in the meantime, that is. :) Got someone coming to look at my P10 this weekend, so I might have some cash burning a hole in my pocket by next week. I can hope.

Ross

I don't have a GP100, but I do have a 2½" S&W 66, which I absolutely love. I got it used from a few years back. It has absolutely the nicest trigger pull of any handgun I've ever shot; of course it isn't anywhere near the way it came from the factory.

Ken

Well, I did say regardless, and yes, neither company is lily-white, though the S&W that caved for Slick Willie isn't the Smith now, Old Bill is dead, and so, I'll assume Ruger may have changed (but I'm skepical, since they cave in to the .gov worse than any body else).

Yeah, I've NO intention of ever buying a new Smith, they are big bucks.

And, yes, I'm very biased, I DO like the K-38's. I'll have to make sure and bring Pop's gun up to Ripton. IIRC, it's a 6 inch, and shoots sweet.

Ruger does make the best SA, though, I'd be criminal, if I didn't say that.

Take the S&W 4", no question. For IDPA, you'll want the extra sight radius. The trigger on a 19/66 is better from the factory than the GP100 will ever be. As for working on the S&W trigger, yes it is a bit more difficult. Spend $100 on a trigger job if you must and you're all done. You won't need to touch the hammer/sear again.

I agree with the last poster. S&W triggers out of the box just slap every other manufacturer.

Contact Darius Arbabi and ask him where he got his Smith worked on. He has a gunsmith that he uses and the actions come back like butter. Very smooth Double Action.

I have a 686, and I thought the trigger was smoothe & clean from the factory. BUt I had Dave Santurri do a trigger job on it and wow it's awesome. I shoot it so much beter double action now than before. The single action is a 2.5 lb break that's really crisp. He is a great gunsmith and he's in Pawtucket RI,(401) 726-1310

Okay, what did ya end up buying?

Ross,

Okay, I am kinda in the same search as you. An IDPA compliant, 6 shot that I can also actually carry.

My thinking is that I want a summer carry gun that I can slip into a pocket holster of my summer shorts with a t-shirt. So, yes, I have the same 2.5" vs. 4" question/problem.

I put an S&W airlight (alloy) 38 in my pocket at a store this last week, and it wasn't even there. But I need to shoot one first to get past the "light gun-big recoil" question for myself.

SO....... what did you finally get????

Dan

I wound up getting a 4" Model 66. I'm not going to be carrying it, I suspect, because of how bulky it is, though. That's OK, though... i have others I can carry. I just really wanted a revolver to shoot IDPA.

Ross

Dan,

If you're looking for a pocketable 6 shooter, take a look at an old Colt snubbie. The Agent , Cobra, and Detective Special are between a J frame and K frame in size. The DS might be a bit on the heavy end for a pocket but the steel frame would be better if you plan on shooting a lot. The Agent and Cobra are alloy frames: lighter but less suited to heavy use.

Gun and Sport North has had one on their used gun list for a while now.

Model I shot was a 340.

Ross,

How much was your 66? Did you get it from Four Seasons?

I just bought one too!

$330 & $16 for a Hogue monogrip - it came with an interesting set of grips marked for the Somerville Auxilliary PD... I think. Here's what they looked like.

I have no use for them since I find these style grips uncomfortable.

You got yourself a heck of a deal, Mr. R!

I paid four bills for mine.

Well... it's not real pristine; there's a scratch by the screw that holds in the crane. :( Obviously, some hoof-handed previous owner slipped while taking it apart to clean it.

Hey, I didn't buy it to look at it, so I'm not real worried.

SW 686P & 642

Well, after some thought (yea, like 5 minutes) I decided to head over to FSGuns.

Talked out the question with Carl for a while, and I ended up with TWO guns. Gee, what a surprise. I am such a sucker for the toy store. (Not Carl's fault!)

I got the S&W 686P .357 4" barrel for competition, AND the S&W 642 Airweight 38 Special +P snub-nose (1 7/8" barrel).

The 686P is a 7 shot and the 4" barrel gives the accuracy. (Yes, I know that IDPA only lets you load 6 rds)

The 642 is only 15oz, and is sitting in my pocket holster right now. I don't even know it's there. I will test them both this week and get a feel for various ammo, loads, etc. (Have about 7 different ones to try.)

Not the "one gun" solution I was looking for, but what the heck.

Anyone know of a good holster (competition) for the 686/L-frames? That they have used themselves? I see very few paddles, so I guess I need to jump to the loop/leather.

I handled that Somerville Aux one at Four Seasons.
Seemed like a good buy, but I was looking for a shorter barrel, 2.5" or 3".
Something different from the 4 inch 686 I've had for some years.

Well, I now have 3 wheel guns (not counting the Remington New Model Army) - a 686P w/ a 6" bbl, the Model 66, and a Mod 637 Airweight... Hmm. I see a theme here...

Anyway, now have barrels ranging from 1.875" to 6", and capacities from 5 to 7 shot. Amusing, in a way. But I'm content.

Ross

I keep thinking I should get a .22 revolver for when I an teaching someone to shoot... I remember when I was learning on a semi, I was nervous about if I'd hit the trigger more than once accidentally. From what I've been told, I'm not the only one with that reaction.
