Top Shot back tonight

I believe the reason Jay is doing so well is because he's a golfer.
As Derek said earlier, shooting is mostly mental. I can't believe I'm the first in 35 pages of posts to make the golf/shooting connection. I've always said they are very similar. They are both stupid-simple to physically do: the hard part is to make your body do what your mind wants it to.
Doesn't take an extreme athlete to swing a club, make solid contact, and send it straight. It also doesn't take an extreme athlete to align sights and squeeze a trigger. It's all about mentally making your hands/body do it correctly every time.

Not sure I expressed that correctly.

One of my favorite shooting rituals was to listen to a book-on-tape while driving out to the match that was titled "Golf is not a game of perfect". A sports psychologist tape for golf instruction. Give it a try. Its amazing how many things apply across both disciplines. They even use the word "shoot" fairly often in golf. :)

I think you expressed it perfectly. Makes tons of sense.

Is this that whole 90% mental and 20% physical thing?

A little bit of this helps too.

"Top Shot" Jay

[smile] Show is rigged, you had to hear the guys all talking about how he would be hampered by his grip and stance while trying to get target aquisition. So here is the perfect "challenge" for this gopher. The entire challenge he never had to change his sight picture. WHAT DOPES[laugh2] All he had to do was not hyper-ventilate.

Same situation for the other guy... who, btw, was leading and then CHOKED.

Jay has yet to choke.

Also... everyone keeps saying things like "amatuer" and "golf pro"....

But he was good enough with a bow to make the olympic trials in 2004. Maybe not as distinguished as some of the others, but he's no hack chump either.

I believe you did.

I just watched this week's episode on Friday night. I really haven't seen any sign of the cockiness that others complain about, other than a few comments that are given prominence due to selective editing to enhance the drama (which also makes the good guys appear to be "gooder", for the sake of TV).

What I see in Jay is a guy who keeps Zen: he stays in his mental zone. He's not very personable because he's not there to win a personality contest, he's there to win a shooting contest, and that's what's he's focused on. All the side crap about who's a veteran and who's not, who you'd want by your side in battle, who respects the traditions of The Corps, etc., are just bothersome noise. Jay doesn't hear it, while the others seem to be turning it up.

Celebrating the Marine Corps birthday is not bothersome noise. It's a privilege which very few understand.

I don't think he meant it as a slight to the Marine Corps. What I got out of the comment is that Jay Lim is there to shoot and win. Nothing else.

I keep saying to myself that something is going to come out about Jay in the future...obviously any Military, law enforcement, or professional competition history in his past would have been easily discovered. However, I don't buy that he's only been shooting for a couple of years, as I remember him claiming. I also have to wonder if some of his "bad" and or unorthodox habits (his stance, grip, claimed ignorance of weapons, etc) is all a show to throw everyone off. I just don't believe he's as inexperienced as he makes himself look and sound.

True that. I love how it says "Golf Instructor" when it lists his background. I wouldn't think the Navy "Rescue Swimmer" had much hands-on weapon experience in his career as a swimmer. It's usually not part of that "career path." He (the Rescue Swimmer) alluded to how "great" the Navy was for its training in the use of firearms for those who had the chance to go through one of their schools that incorporated small arms into its training regimen, but he was a bit vague on his past experiences as well.

I think you may be reading into it a bit too much in the hopes it will justify his success. Some people are just naturals. However, naturals do not always employ the popular techniques used by those with training. Ever see someone ski their asses off in their first weekend on planks but they're doing it "all wrong"? It happens. He's as good as he is because 1) he has natural talent and 2) he has an ego that does not allow him to believe he is anything short of awesome.

He might not have laid out all his shooting experience in front of the camera (or they just never aired it), but his bio doesn't hide anything.

The graduate of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Skills and Practical Weapons courses and Anti-Terrorism Force Protection/Deadly Force Training is a rifle and pistol expert. As a 13-year active duty Navy rescue swimmer and Operations Specialist, this self-proclaimed "natural leader" attended BUD/S training twice early in his career. During various overseas deployments, he was hand-selected for personal security details in high-threat areas. Jamie admits there is usually "no filter between my brain and my mouth" and wants to prove that he's the pride of the Navy.

SKILLS / EXPERIENCE:

Navy rifle and pistol marksmanship expert
Joint Service Commendation Medal
4 Navy/Marine Corps achievement medals
Navy Meritorious Unit commendation and National Defense Service medal
Formal training in Navy Search and Rescue, Low-light Shooting, and Water Survival Instruction
Occasional hunter. Has shot long and compound bows.
Competed in local amateur trap shooting events

I've seen plenty of noobs apply the fundamentals and do extremely well.

The Navy Rescue Swimmer is a bit of a strange one too. When they went into the fact he wouldn't say what he did in the Navy, my first reaction was that maybe he was a SEAL and didn't want that out there for everyone's knowledge. Then is occured to me that maybe the show was editted to get exactly that reaction from viewers, to add to the drama..."Ohhhhh, I bet he's a SEAL and just doesn't want to say so!" For all we know, immediately after shying away from the question once, he may have explained exactly what his past was, but they editted clips in a way to make it look like he was avoiding answering and that it was an on-going situation.

I think my pick for winner is that Joe Serafini guy (I probably butchered his last name). He seems to stay cool under pressure and keeps his head clear of the drama and games, and just gets the task at hand done well. Then again, it's hard to get much of a feel for the red team guys because they haven't been on camera as much because they keep winning the challenges, lol.

As Daryl showed last week, and Blake showed last season, all it takes is a slight one-in-one hundred mishap with a 10/22 mag or one-in-one hundred miss of a stationary target 25 feet away with a 92FS to end your time there. Those kind of mistakes happen to anyone, even the hardcore professionals.

Very nice. Thanks for the "heads up" on that. I hadn't even looked into the bios on the website. I was just going by what I had gathered from the show. Sounds like he does have some solid training with firearms.

Rescue swimmers do a lot of shooting. Sidearms up to M2's and GAU-17's.

X2

My best friend growing up just got into shooting, there is room for improvement but his third time at the range he is shooting much better than a lot of people I see at the range who've been going for years. Also, people who have certain skills/abilities can carry them over. If this guy is a pro golfer, and good at it, that requires similar things such as stance, swing, follow through, etc. Don't get me wrong, I despise golf, but if he's a golf pro, that holds weight.

Jay's gone!!!! w00t!!! [party]

btw, George is quite the douche.

Yes he is, he always surprises me with what he's gonna say next:

As Jamie was returning to his team and George said something to the effect of:
"You knew you were on the chopping block, so you shot good... good job; but, "F*ck you."

I just about spit my drink all over the place. [laugh]

ETA: "BerkshireHunter" beat me to it by seconds! lol. +1
