Can anyone comment on whether MA has laws on the book restricting firearm possession and/or carry near school grounds? I had read somewhere that there are laws in some states that restrict possession/CC within 1000 feet of a school (public or private, pimary or secondary school). Is this true of MA? What about Boston? I live just down the block from a school and want to steer clear if its legally questionable.

thanks!

I don't recall the specific answer about "close", but I do think we've covered it before. Therefore, I suggest that you use "Advanced Search" on the Gun Laws forum and use "school" as your search criteria.

If you find it, please feel free to post a response here with the URL of the info. Then if you have further questions perhaps we can help answer them.

I do know that you can NOT possess any firearms on school property (per MGL). There apparently is some thought that locked and secured in the trunk BEFORE entering school property MIGHT be OK just to pick up your kids, but I am NOT sure this is true, and I'll bet that Boston PD and Menino wouldn't "read it" that way.

To me, a "gun-free zone" is equivalent to a "criminal-safe zone". If you're going to lack the means for self-defense as a matter of policy, it seems the least you can do is not to advertise it!

This was an interesting history about the protection of schools in Israel. Apparently they had the same debates there ("This isn't the Wild West...") but eventually decided to do something instead of wringing their hands.

Short answer is that in general possessing a firearm within 1000 feet of a school is prohibited unless 1) you have a license issued by the local law enforcement authorities that involved background checks etc and/or 2) if you are on private property. Thus everyone who owns a handgun legally in the state of Massachusetts is covered by part 1.

I think you meant or

Just remember (as I'm sure we all do) that while your LTC will exempt you from the federal law, Massachusetts law still prohibits carrying on school grounds without permission from the head honcho of the school.
