(sorry paywall)

Gun maker Smith & Wesson Brands Inc. is moving its corporate headquarters from Massachusetts to Tennessee, joining other firearms manufacturers that have moved from the mid-Atlantic and Northeast to Southern states with less restrictive gun laws.
The company will invest more than $125 million to relocate its headquarters and some operations from Springfield, Mass., where it has been based for generations, to Blount County, Tenn., near Knoxville. It will create 750 jobs in the area, according to the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development.

They should have pulled up stakes completely decades ago.....I don't know why they are leaving anything in MA.
They have their own foundry in Springfield served by rail freight. Building a new plant with that capability and supporting supply chain costs a lot of money. I'm sure they will work something out in Tennessee and eventually relocate production in phases with employee relocation incentives.

The Springfield, Mass., facility will be reconfigured, but it will remain operational. Several manufacturing operations, including forging, machining and metal finishing and revolver assembly, will remain in Springfield, Mass. Smith & Wesson will continue to employ more than 1,000 employees in its Springfield location.

They are keeping their mass location open, so it isn't a total win.

Oddly enough, Maryville and nearby Alcoa have popped up as relocation sites in the last week. I'm a bit on the ancient side, but maybe they'll be looking for part time help!

This will be looked at as a big win for the MA anti’s. It will only have marginal effect on Springfield, and the Boston pols don’t care about anything west of 495 anyway. The Springfield Dem machine would rather have casinos and pot shops than “dirty” manufacturing.

This is going to have a significant effect in terms of job loss for Springfield, a city that really can't afford that. Sure, some will remain, but I'm hearing at least 750 jobs heading south. Whatever you think of MA as being not a gun friendly state, this is bad news for a lot of families, and the local vendors who supply this factory.

A great many of the peoduction employees are temp workers that work for the temp agency. They will most likely move the AR production line right away. It would be the easiest production department to move. Most of the AR line production workers are temps and they will not have to give any move incentives. Also there is no machinery to move It is not that difficult to train new workers to build AR's. The forge and heat treating department will most likely not ever move.

S&W is the 3rd. Largest employer in the Springfield area. This will definitely be a problem for the area. This will also dwindle the tax base. Not good for an already depressed economy. The Casino in no way can make the difference in employment and tax base. As it is the city got jacked on the Casino originally it was planned to much larger and then the Casino Co. Changed the plan at the last minute and told Springfield this is what you are getting and if you don't want it we can move to another location

I just saw the S&W press release. It looks as though they will be moving the AR line and the M&P pistol line. Based on possible MA. Legislation that would prohibit production of any assault style firearms and firearms that hold large capacity magazines. So the state is responsible for pushing S&W out of state by impending legislation stoping them from production of there most popular products. The M&P style pistol and AR rifle.
The revolver is the only thing they can manufacture in MA.
