Last month the deadline to recertify NY pistol permits came and went, and estimates of compliance ranged from a high of 30% to a low of 10%. It was almost comical approaching deadline watching state and local police both saying it was not their job to revoke permits or round up the weapons of those non complying. State police stated they would take no action during interaction with permit holder who failed to recertify.

I've said on more than occasion here that I've got friends who are police officers; hell - I've got one buddy who works for TSA and another who works for CPB, (customs & border protection). My son's a veteran, so was my father, and now that I'm living down here I shoot with a lot of active and retired military. We live pretty close to Fort Stewart and a high percentage of my development is either active or retired military - these are my friends and neighbors.

But - I'm Jewish. My mother fled Austria as a child, and some of my family disappeared. My godparents had serial numbers tattoed on their forearms, hid food in odd places in their house and made their living as stamp dealers - you could stash a million dollar's worth of stamps in an envelope inside your jacket and run.

That's not some distant past history that happened to other people.

That's my maternal grandfather that I never knew. That's my Uncle Arthur and Aunt Trude who were always a little "different".

NEVER AGAIN isn't some cutesy saying to me. It's personal.

And firearm ownership is a lot of things to me. It's pins, plates, USPSA, IDPA, skeet - all the fun things I do with my wife and friends. It's fun at the range, it's trying to shoot better.

But it's also studying the applicable laws and thinking about what it would mean to shoot someone who was trying to kill me or someone I love. It's machining out an 80% lower because this is another firearm that the ATF doesn't need to know that I have. And it's thinking about the fact that people in this country think that the ATF need to know about every firearm that I have - and that I disagree strongly with them.

It's looking at the current political climate and shaking my head in disbelief - because I'm not going to disarm myself. I am not going to be a victim. It is not governmnent's job to protect me, and they can't. And in the worst possible case - not only won't they protect me - they'll be the ones killing me.

When you say that can't happen - tell my grandparents that.

I'm not getting on the train.

It goes far beyond that. They fail or refuse to see that many of their fellow members of society which they like to fantasize about being the incarnation of their hateful straw-man are actually fellow observers of the flaws in government. Whether it is regarding police brutality or other jack booted behavior, it is many (true) conservatives who have been decrying these behaviors in parallel with those on the other side.

In addition, it beyond comprehension why they would continue to put infinite trust in a government that they routinely talk about protesting. Its probably a function of that allowing them to seek absolution for the part they play in the world, if the government is responsible for everything they can shirk personal responsibility. These people never stood up for themselves before in life, why would they start now of all times?

Unfortunately I have to agree. History shows governments don't collapse until they no longer have the money to pay the enforcers and in the USA that will never happen.

Some number of the military and police will quit but there will be plenty left to follow orders.

I'm not drawing a parallel to our country and to Nazi Germany, the politics are entirely different. What I see right now is a push to disarm law-abiding citizens, and I'm not going along with that.
