Garand or SKS?

JFC how much grease and oil do you guys use on your guns,
The M1 requires no more or less maintenance than a SKS or a AR for that matter.
My great uncle a WWII vet said that grease pot should last you years.

cost of ammo is sort of a mute point and if your not resupplying your ammo needs before run out , well your going to go with out for a bit.

Yup. A small tube of grease will probably last the rest of your life. It’s not like you are out every day in the weather humping your rifle and cleaning it daily.

I think if you get the bonus, definitely get the Garand and some ammo (PPU 30-06 Springfield Ammo M1 Garand 150 Gr FMJ 500 Rds Ammo Can)

If you don't, get the SKS.

The SKS was the second gun/rifle I bought after getting my LTC and I shot it for awhile and even installed a red dot (don't flame me lol) since the iron sights were getting a litttle tough to hit my 8" steel plate at 120 yards. I haven't shot it in probably 5 years at this point. But the cheap ammo was a big selling factor to me at the time when I had a much lower income. Shit I just bought 960 rounds of x39 at Walmart for 13 cents per round. That's dirt cheap but I realize that's a one time deal and not the norm. I think 20 cents is the cheapest from targetsportsusa?

But I will say, the Garand's aren't getting any more plentiful or cheaper so getting one is a good investment. I got a service grade Garand from the CMP and don't have any regrets. I do reload 30-06 but at the rate I shoot my Garand I honestly don't need to reload. I haven't even burned through all of my HXP and PPU that I've had since 2014?

You're more than welcome to shoot my Garand and Norinco SKS at my local club in Gloucester if you wanted to try them before buying one yourself. I've got PLENTY of ammo to feed them.

I am on my second container of grease in 5 years. Well technically I bought it 3 years ago and am getting close to opening it ....

In fairness I was cleaning and regreasing my shotgun way more than I needed to at the start.

I also probably have multiple years of clp, as my BIL gave me a pint bottle last year (also unopened).

Its Friday and I shot all my 30.06. I live near Worcester. If I wanted to shoot my Garand, I'd either have to drive an hour to get ammo, or wait for TSUSA until next weekend.
Also, I didn't say you had to grease it every time you use it, I simply said it needs to be greased regularly, which is something I dont have to do with my SKS.

Also, you should never have to clean from the muzzle, especially on a 75+ year old rifle.

Dude drive over to Cabela's or Bass Pro or Tombstone Traders. I'm SURE they will have ammo for you. Hell GunParlor may even have some! JFC talk about first world problems.

As for cleaning from the muzzle, you'd have to take that up with John Garand, but really you don't need to. You can use the pull through that comes in the cleaning kit in the butt stock (or on ebay or GB or anywhere). OR like I do, you can use a boresnake or an Otis cleaning kit with the flexible coated wire pullthrough. Its really not hard. And its the same for an M1 Carbine btw. And probably others too.

Will keep that offer in mind.

May end up getting an SKS down the line but that is easier to find the scratch for.

Heck if I sell one of the guns that gets left home from the range often I could flip it into an SKS. The garand requires the dedicated planned funds. Or more likely will use the money to tool up for reloading which would help with the .45 and .38 costs.

Gun Parlor? Really? ... might as well shop at Dick's.

F*ck that place.

If you're an Andover member, I have two M1s (service grade and field grade special) and a Yugo SKS. You're welcome to try any of them if you haven't already if we can find a date/time.

Their price points really are not even close for comparable grades. A shootable sks can be had under 400$. You looking at at least 700$ for a garand, and that would be on the cheap. If you want a war garand, it will cost significantly more.

Not looking for a war garand, would be nice but not throwing around the funds to get something highly collectable at a premium

You can get a nice M1 shooter with new barrel and new walnut stock $650 shipped from cmp. What I see for under $400 for SKS mot so nice?
Its all good i have both and SKS was my first Semi auto center fire rifle because its what I could afford in 1991. $89 with a case of corrosive ammo free:

CMP has field grades for $650 shipped right now.
There you go, lowest grade m1 garand price buys 2 sks rifles
Price points are not close.
Norinco sks 299$ all day.
Maybe you can get a bag of garand parts for that price.
I still say buy a garand though. Feels so good to shoot.

EDIT On the other hand, For 650 you can buy a real nice sks.

Then be scared to shoot that $650 sks so you dont devalue it......oh the fun .

$300 SKS tempting

$650 SKS pass I wouldn't get the premium value out of it.

Will have to keep those in mind if the bonus is extra big.

Want to save money buying guns? Don't buy them! I don't analyze gun purchases like I'm buying a car. Yes 30-06' ammo can be pricey compared to 7.62x39, so what? You're owning a genuine piece of American history on par with the Winchester rifle and .45 Colt. I own a 53' H&R so I'm not as hesitant as shooting a vintage WWII issue. But if you're going to blast 500rds every range trip, get an M1A. These are military rifles designed to e shot; shooting 9 clips every range trip won't hurt it. My M1 might not be WWII era, but I'm sure it has some stories to tell.

I'm in my early 30s and distinctly remember playing WW2 video games an blasting away with the Garand. I have not made a pilgrimage to Springfield Armory National Historic Park.

Kittery TP has a Yugo for $425, I just saw it on their website.

Kind of a little off track but would you guys compare the Garand more to a M1A/M14? I already have a Yugo but I've been looking to add another semi rifle lately while waiting for some HK parts.

No.

A new Springfield Standard M1A is double the price of a CMP Rack Grade. $650 versus $1325. Totally different price brackets.

Also, a M1 doesn't have a detachable mag. That's a huge difference because of legislation and available rounds to shoot. What happens if you live in Mass and put a modern stock on a M1A with more than two "features"? The M1A has a bunch of options for modernization, like modern stocks. The M1 does not (and arguably should not).

The M1 was the best service rifle in the world in 1936. The M14 was a middling service rifle in 1957 that was quickly replaced by the M16. The M14's frontline service history is almost a footnote in history similar to the Lee-Metford.

The parts aren't interchangeable for the most part. The handling is similar except for the detachable mag on the M14. The two guns are related but aren't comparable. The M14 is comparable with the FAL, the G3, and the CETME. The M1 is comparable to the SVT-40 and the G43.

Early 30s? Me too. Of course the house, baby, and single income make the cost a bit more forefront. Though mind is fairly made up at this point. As short as the dollars are, between home and work I have less time so difference in ammo cost won't be huge on a per year basis for a while.

I also need to get out to the Springfield Armory. On my to do list.

it's a great little museum. Probably take 1-3 hours to get thru it, depending on how much you read or spend on each exhibit... so you can build it into a trip out there, but might be a bit small for a dedicated trip from the Boston area just for that..

So where do you put the BM-59? [troll]

I'll have to go to the casino then. Or when the weathers good Flags×6.

IMO the M1 and M14 close enough. Similar bolt function, gas piston, and what about that trigger group? The BM59 was already mentioned- sort a half step between the two. Also a few of us on the forum know a Vietnam vet who would take great offense to the M14 being considered 'middling' and assumed inferior to the new M16.

Regardless, it's certainly easier to build an M1 than it is to build a M14 / M1A. Maintenance on either is about the same effort.
