Cheapest place to buy ammo in Massachusetts?

Walmart and Four Seasons have comparable pricing on White Box. Four Seasons has selection of other brands as well.
Collectors Coin has a good reasonably priced selection as well and sometimes has surplus stuff that can be a real savings.

The cheapest ammo is your basement with a Dillon Press.
it's not universally true.
even if you pickup brass for free you still need to buy projectiles and powders which isn't cheap.
you can find ammo that is cheaper than reloading. hence the reason i'm not bothering for mainstream calibers and only reload various exotics and hard-to-find stuff.

Across the board reloading generally saves me a third of what I'd spend on factory stuff. I don't do it for the savings though as much as it allows me to shoot exactly what I want in my guns instead of compromising by buying "whatever is cheap." And I also enjoy it. But I won't ever drive an hour away to save a buck or two on a box of ammo, not worth it to me and makes no sense.

For 9mm, arguably one of the most "mainstream" calibers in existence, here's the prices I've found.
Bullet: Berry's plated 115gr RN - about 8 cents
Primer: 3 cents
Powder: between 1 and 2 cents

Total: 12-13 cents/round

Try finding even the cheap stuff for that price per round. Granted, you have to make the initial investment for the equipment, and instead of saving money you'll probably just shoot more, but you see my point.

What common calibers are more expensive to reload if you assume your time has no value? Even the cheapest centerfire pistol ammo, the 9mm 100 pack from WalMart is $19.97, can be made for $15 even in small quantities. I personally only reload ammo that is 25 cents or more per round (45 acp, 44 mag, 357 mag)

Are you talking about buying surplus ammo?

Thanks

Chris

Let me know we're I can buy 9mm for less than $6.49 a box of fifty because that's what it's costing me to load my own.

I view time as my most valuable resource. We each have a finite and rapidly disappearing amount of it. If you enjoy reloading, though, then have at it!

I am pretty sure the OP was asking about already loaded factory ammo. Having said that if you want to shoot them pistols cheap get a bullet mold and cast your own. Even with buying the lead you can shoot a 9mm for about 6 cents each. Yes I know you have to buy a mold and maybe something to heat the mix with. All part of the fun.

Walmart has the best prices for me. BUT, every time I go there I have to find someone to call someone who can send someone to open the case for me. Then there's the runaround with checking ID multiple times, not being able to handle it myself until I've paid for it, etc. Every time I buy there I think about reloading. My point here is there's a time/aggravation aspect to buying factory loads, too.

Agreed. I just went through this on Saturday in Walpole; it took forever to find someone and then after she radioed someone over I was waiting another 10 minutes for him to show up. At least he only checked my ID once and checked me out right there so I didn't have to be "escorted" to the front and identified all over again. I wish I lived closer to Woburn...

Dick's & Walmart can have some great prices, when they have ammo. They're way to hit or miss for my taste. Four Seasons is the most consistent, but Original Bob's has some smoking deals once in a while. I recently bought from Bob's some milsurp 8mm Mauser for .30¢ per round & 7.62x54r for .31¢ per round.

Before the Missouri Compromise (1820), Maine was part of Mass. I find Cabela's in Scarborough is by far the cheapest and most consistent place to get ammo in bulk. They're only 45 minutes north of Salisbury, and they're in line with all the internet places that won't ship to Mass.

$.31 a round for 7.62x54r, if that's surplus, you are getting robbed!!!! The most I've paid is $99 for a 440 Spam can, $.23/round, at Collectable in NH, and didn't have to pay tax.
I did find a mail order place for $.19, shhh don't tell Martha. And that included shipping.
Needless to say, I stocked up!!!
I've found Walmart in Plaistow to be well stocked for .38 and .45 WWB, and decently priced.
I am actually going to Maine this weekend and plan on stopping in Cabelas. I need a few more pieces to complete my reload bench. Because of the initial costs, I've been buying piece by piece. So soon, I will be reloading for cheaper than buying ammo.

It's the only way I can afford to shoot as much as I do.

With my Dillon SDB I can pump out between 400 to 500 rounds an hour of either 9mm, 40S&W and 45ACP. That is a good investment of time IMO.

Cut the umbilical cord. Make your own and never worry again...priceless.

650 or Hornady LnL.

Hornady LnL ??? The Google search came up with Lock n Load as a single stage press. Is that what you had in mind? Was looking for a Progressive Press.

My BAD. Guess they also have a multi stage press with the same LnL.

but shooting is also a hobby. So time reloading shouldnt be seen as losing money. It should be seen as doing something you like, instead of working all the time.
