BREAKING: North Andover, MA Being Evacuated

Notice, however, that there doesn't appear to be any photos of her meeting with the victims of this tragedy at any of the established shelters. She must be far to important to mingle with the commoners that may have lost everything in this event

State of emergency; Eversource will act as .gov's agent

Baker just announced that he is going to be declaring a state of emergency. By doing so it allows the .gov to dictate who will oversee the operations of the state of emergency. He has appointed Eversource as that entity. Eversource will work with the "leaders of those communities".

This is all due to Columbia Gas not showing up at the command center, not meeting with owners or the press.

If true, it's incredible that they didn't.

Management packed their bags and caught a flight to Belize.

Columbia Gas set up a two person table very separate from the Command Center. When press and owners started asking questions with the cameras rolling, the two had no answers so they left in a company car.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Again not surprised and I'm sure that the two that they sent weren't given any info that would be any help to those who were victims.

I can see that job posting now:

Now hiring, two fall guys, no prior experience necessary...

They are going door to door with locksmiths to break into houses to "check" that the gas is shut off. No warrants. Does anyone else agree this is a huge problem? Locksmiths’ skills come in handy as officials enter homes to check gas lines - The Boston Globe

And, in rare occasions, such as Thursday’s gas explosions, they have to let emergency responders inside homes to make sure power lines are shut off.

They don’t like that work. They never enter without State Police, and they only do it to make sure the door is locked when they leave. The rest of the work is up to the gas technicians.

MacEachern took approximately 10 minutes to pick the lock at one house on Buckingham Road, first trying the front door, then the back door, only to have a relative of the homeowner arrive just as he had finally pried the door open.

The man was angry that no one called him. MacEachern explained he was just doing his job.

“They got to realize what’s going on here,” MacEachern said. The responders, he said, “have a responsibility to make sure everyone is safe.”

What happens if they see a gun they don't think meets "safe storage" requirements in a house they broke into without a warrant?

It wasn't.

But the example of the possible damage & ignition dangers has been a key argument by towns and localities (against the pipe line) as to why some don't want one running through their towns.
Indeed, that is their argument, and it's really stupid. These explosions weren't caused by a new long-distance pipeline, it was an issue with the local pipelines servicing local homes. Adding regional NG capacity with additional long-distance pipelines is a perfectly safe thing to do. Not doing it risks rolling blackouts within a decade or two. Rolling blackouts. In America.

These anti-NG pipeline arguments are pushed by the Maura Healey style leftists. Don't buy into them. Even the Boston Globe's editorial board doesn't.

That alone would be reason enough that I would refuse any evacuation order. I can shut off gas and power just fine myself (assuming I didn't actually smell gas at the time of course). I would camp out in the yard if I had to, and let them in with a key if they didn't believe me it was off (I am sure they would not believe me).

My son did a 13 hour stint on mutual aid.
They worked on a couple of fires and then went out in small groups to do meter shut offs.
He went with a couple of Chelsea cops and someone from the gas company.
He said it was kind of eerie in the dark and not a soul around as the fog rolled in.
According to him, the organization of the whole thing was top notch.
He said the Lawrence dispatch was as pro and on their game as could be.
Props to Market Basket for pitching in and making sure the first responders got food and drink.
They set up in the cinema parking lot and kept the burgers and hot dogs coming all night.

Speaking as one of those locksmiths this happens a lot more often than you may think. Keep your stuff as if this could happen at any time; because it can and it does. I have subcontracted for National Grid before on emergency shutdowns. Definitely made me think about how much privacy we really have, if there is a “gas emergency” they will be in your home with zero notice, dozens of workers and cops there to give the blessing.

Was listening to LPD for a while on broadcastify last night. They sounded like they had their shit together.

Just got back from Lawrence. My Nephew that I mentioned in an earlier post asked me if I wanted to help him with something. Without asking any questions I said "Sure."
I jump into his work van and head Northeast. 45 minutes later we are in downtown Lawrence and stopping at an assets rally point for Fire/Police/Utility crews. He asks the cop where he can dump some donations. I go around to the back of the Partitioned work van and he opens the doors. WTF? he's got 20 cases of Poland Springs water, 5 Huge bags of food and a bunch of dog and cat food. Cop then said that they could really use this stuff over at a temp shelter at the Arlington School. He asks what the address is for the GPS and the Lawrence PD Lieutenant says to another patrolman Hey Give this guy and escort. Lol, now we're booking across Lawrence at full speed behind a fully lit up and sirened LPD cruiser. Never a dull moment. I found out afterwards he gave them $500 in Food and water and another $500 in Market Basket Gift cards. This kid learned Right...

Couldn't they just shit gas off in the street? As for power:

I do know that they have fuses on the poles that they could pull. Not sure if every pole.

They weren’t at the “cheese shop” this morning.

My kid works for Bertucci's and their mobile ovens were up there yesterday, today, and probably tomorrow, giving out eats. There was at least one fire truck from Framingham, so they had a wide response.

Pizza can make even the worst situation... bearable.
Good on him!
