Mary Vriniotis, a research specialist with the Harvard School of Public Health's Youth Violence Prevention Center, said an underlying cause of the shootings and students' fear of them is the accessibility of guns.

"Indiscriminate shootings wouldn't happen if there was no gun," she said.

Maybe indiscriminate shootings wouldn't happen if there was not a pervasive culture which glorifies ignorance and violence. How about that for an underlying cause? Or is that bad for these gang members' self esteem?

If I had a prize I would give it to you. You hit the nail on the head.

I don't know what makes me more sad; The fact that my rights are being taken away as a result of this blatant ignorance, or the fact that we take one step further from the solution when we place the blame on the wrong variable.

+1 for you.

I guess indiscriminate stabbings would be less tragic and newsworthy.

F-ing idiot.

Who gives a shit? Better that they get shot off now. In a few years the guys will buy a gun, steal a car and end up face down in a pool of blood in an alley somewhere. The gals will have six kids by six different fathers and will sit around soaking up the welfare bucks. Clearly, Menino is not doing his job and is copping out by blaming it all on the guns. Jack.

An irrational fear of firearms usually stems from projection.

The individual that fears them actually fears what they would do if they had one in their hands. They don't trust themselves, so why should they trust others?

(I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just mentioning that's their thought process.)

Now, politicians don't fall under this. They generally fear firearms, because they're afraid of getting shot. Most of them have just cause for that fear, as they earned EVERY bit if it.

See, for non-politicians fearing firearms is simply a mental disorder.

A lot of politicians fear firearms because they don't want to have the citizens in a position of power. The rest do so because they are either "A": Stupid, or "B": Use it as an easy target to gain power (i.e. the blame something crowd).

Bravo!

The rise of the anti-hero in popular media/culture is a HUGE factor here as well as the demise of personal responsibility.

Well, the nice thing about statements like this is the fun you can have plugging in different behaviors and objects. How about these:

"Indiscriminate auto accidents wouldn't happen if there was no traffic."

"Indiscriminate pregnancies wouldn't happen if there was no sex."

"Indiscriminate rain wouldn't happen if there was no weather."

"Indiscriminate crimes wouldn't happen if there were no laws."

You can actually have a fun time coming up with other absurdities. [laugh] They all are as true, and make as little sense, as the original statement.

Gah! I'm still irritated by this. Ban guns and eliminate gun crime. Right. That worked SO well for illegal drugs. No one smokes pot, does coke, crack, meth, heroin, E, blah blah blah.

Davis has called for tougher mandatory sentences for those who blindly shoot in crowds or near bystanders, saying such blatant disregard for safety deserves its own classification of crime.

Someone with a brain, thank you. Tougher sentences for those who commit these crimes instead of taking out on the responsible and law abiding. This type of rational thought isn't usually something we read in the Globe.

Why can't one f-ing liberal ever hold the f-ing bad guy responsible for his actions?????

Because to do so violates the fundamental principle of modern (as opposed to classic, intelligent) Liberalism:

Individual have only rights; not responsibilities.

Society is responsible for everything that goes wrong.

Hey i have a brilliant idea.

How about doing your jobs as parents and teaching your a respect for guns, and while your at it respect for life.
Oh Hell just teach them right from wrong.
God im soo tired of this culture of absentee parents who couldnt raise a friggen hamster and expect the world to baby sit there kids .
I mean god dammnit due your f***ing job and raise your kids right and you wouldnt have to worry about little Timmy rolling with gang bangers .
I drive through parts of boston late at night and see little kids out on the corner at 12:00 am .Yeah thats some great parenting .
My old man would lite my ass up with a belt if i ever talked to my elders like i see kids today doing .

Teach them right from wrong and respect and they will get along fine in this world.

A brain indeed! The problem is the other side of the brain is having Davis's mouth say, "No unrestricted ALP Class A licenses to residents of Boston. All Class A licenses to the un-connected say NO Conceal Carry. The rational thought process doesn't carry over to respecting the rights of law abiding citizens.
Best regards.

1.) Recidivism rates being what they are they'd have no one or nothing to blame that would allow them to pass more legislation that would force everyone to hide under momma's wing and suckle solely at her teat.
2.) 'Cause they'd feel bad.
