One and a half hours, and nobody ganged up and tried to stop him? How old were the campers again? Even 5 14 year olds could probably peg him with rocks and storm him while he was reloading. I know, "Monday morning quarterback", but it just seems like such a long time there. What a terrible tragedy.

Sheep don't throw rocks.

These were a bunch of kids at a Labour Party (social-democrat - means socialist) "camp" of some form.

What kind of kids would be a POLITICAL PARTY camp? Especially a socialist political party.

I think this is a pretty good example of "beliefs have repercussions".

Not to blame the victims here - but imagine if you will the shooter went to the island - which had a bunch of kids at a Nazi party youth camp. Do you think the outcome would have been different?

From its roots as a radical alternative to the political establishment, the party grew to its current dominance through several eras:

The party experienced a split in 1921 caused by a decision made two years earlier to join the Communist International, and the Social Democratic Labour Party of Norway was formed. In 1923 the party left the Communist International, while a significant minority of its members left the party to form the Communist Party of Norway. In 1927, the Social Democrats were reunited with Labour. Some Communists also joined Labour, whereas other Communists tried a failed merger endeavor which culminated in the formation of the Arbeiderklassens Samlingsparti.

So at some point in time - the party was actually significantly leaning Communist.

Still a tragedy regardless of your political beliefs.

The summer camp for members of Labour’s youth group AUF (Arbeidernes ungdomsfylking) has launched the political careers of many a Labour Party leader. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg was a fixture at the camp in his youth and remains keen to visit every summer. Both he, Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and former Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland were due to make appearances at this year’s camp during its five-day run that began Wednesday.

Eskil Pedersen, current AUF leader, told newspaper Dagsavisen that this year’s camp will include speeches and debate over the upcoming municipal elections in Norway, the rival Conservative Party’s current policies, the even more conservative Progress Party’s asylum policies and the state of Norwegian schools. The latter is traditionally the issue of most interest to the young politically minded AUF members.

Pedersen, quite possibly a future Labour Party leader or government minister himself if Labour keeps winning elections, said the “best thing” about the camp is “meeting lots of folks who have the same values as you do.” Newspaper Vårt Land, however, recently put another slant on the Utøya camp, reporting that the Labour Party historically is run by a tight network of politicians linked by family relations, marriage and friendships who also have a tendency to take on key roles not only in government but in business and Norway’s powerful bureaucracy as well. Many tend to meet in their youth on the island midway between Oslo and Hønefoss.

He might have been packing a boxcutter or two. Could have turned out way worse.

Of course. I wasn't suggesting that 18-21 year olds would assemble a fighting force and conduct a counter-assault. I was pointing out that age isn't the only factor. You don't magically develop a fighting instinct at 27. We read posts on here all the time about children mounting a defense when needed.

I wonder if the difference is nature or nurture.

While nature has something to do with it, nurturing plays a greater role IMO.

I'm sure the unrelenting attempt to breed aggressiveness and competitiveness out of American boys is not lost on you.

Which is why my children will be leaders, not whiners waiting for others to solve their problems.
 
The more I think about it the less I am inclined to feel sorry for what happened to a highly liberal society run by a socialist elite.

I can no more accept this terrible action by someone who appears to be "a right-wing domestic terrorist" than I can the smaller but more numerous atrocities commited by adherents of the Islamic "religion of peace" such as this one:

They might try to ban semi-automatic rifles, since he used a Mini 14. The public will be screaming for blood after the dust settles.

It's the fault of teenagers that Europe's immigration policies or multicultural policies don't suit someone or their parents are left-wingers. So it's no big deal if someone massacres 90 of them?

Please tell me you aren't saying that.
