Over 60 and voted incorrectly, what, you didn't expect that? In my haste to educate, I voted in the under 40.
In 1968, half way through Basic, they took away our real rifles and gave us M-16's. Well at least it was something else to shoot the hell out of. Didn't have to clean it for 3 days in a row either. I was next to the youngest guy on the line (I was 2nd youngest) and when he missed the target, a disappointing amount of sand was kicked up. How could something that didn't hurt on the shooter's end hurt on the other end? MAGIC bullets is how. Right. Now admittedly at 17, my knowledge of ballistics was less than sparse.
Fast forward a year. Magic bullets seemed to work...... up close. But no more so than my M-60 bullets. No, let's change that to not even close to 7.62x51. How about at distance? Are you friggin' serious?
5.56x45, 55 grain bullet @ 3250 FPS, 248 ft. lbs. at 500 yards. Drop with 250 meter zero, 39 inches.
7.62x51 147 grain bullet @ 2750 FPS, 848 ft. lbs. @ 500 yards. Drop with 250 meter zero, 39 inches. (334 ft. lbs. @ 1000 yards)
Now, as a 63 year old man, I realize that the .223 is easier to shoot than a real, by-God rifle, but until I can no longer shoot said real, by-God rifle, I'll stay away, far, far away from an AR-15.
