2018 / 2019 Winter Warrior Postal Match

I’ll get out there at some point. Last few weeks have been nothing but deer hunting on my days off except Sunday which is family time.
I’m thinking I may shoot something besides the AR for an official entry in this. It’s just too easy with that rifle it’s kind of cheating. I’ll shoot 40 rounds through it regardless just to post up what it can do but it won’t be my submission.
I may have to finally get started on loading up .308 for my Garand and FAL. Pretty sure I’m almost out of factory stuff and I can’t afford to go buy 1000 rounds of .308 right now. Who am I kidding I’ve got a 15 month old and another on the way ETA: late May, so I’m not buying 1000 rounds of anything anytime soon. :D
Yes you are, 1000 rounds of diapers.
Make sure you prep your high capacity diaper genie.

A little warmer today, but plenty of snow on the ground. Danp sort of cold... made my hip ache.

Thought I’d go for the WOW factor...

1916 Danzig Gew98 MATCHED.....Saxon Depot repair 1917...

Problem here is that the Lange-Visier “roller coaster” rear sight is 400M minimum. Had to figure out the Kentucky elevation....

Broke out one of my 3 precious boxes Of PPU 200gr match ammo...

Lost some of the WOW factor as I mounted the target upside down...

92-1X

Target 1 - 97/4X Target 2 - 95/1X

I think I actually have mac to thank for this because 5 years ago he talked me into my first $630 Garand from the CMP. Once again, it was a race against the clock and I watched the sun all but set on my way from work to WP&R Club while racing down rt. 140.

IMG_1789.PNG

Ran my target down and loaded up an enbloc...tightened up my web sling and I was ready to rock! I REALLY took my time with my shots and concentrated on my breathing because 1.) I wanted a good gauge of where I was going to be at on paper so I could make corrections, and 2.) my glasses kept fogging up every time I would hold my 'respiratory pause' for too long (I think hot air comes up from my nose and it basically makes the target invisible).

Some of you may recognize this rifle as the one I shoot in Pembroke most of the time. It has zero modifications other than a barrel peening to get the gas cylinder to fit a little tighter...may have swapped out for a gas lock that timed better at one point too. Other than that, she's a bone stock Springfield with at least one rearsenal under her belt.

IMG_1799.jpg IMG_1804.jpg IMG_1805.jpg

No 'fouling' or 'settling in' rounds...I locked the trigger guard back up about 15 seconds before I started shooting.

IMG_1790.jpg IMG_1791.jpg IMG_1792.jpg IMG_1793.jpg IMG_1794.jpg

MIGHT just be my best score yet...like, ever! Looks like a 97 4X and I have NO idea how it happened! I think I might be trying to spend some more time this year on breathing though, because it's really the only thing I did differently.

REALLY chasing range 'closing time' by the time I was done fluttering over my score and pastying up my target...time to see if I can duplicate this phenomenon!

IMG_1795.jpg IMG_1796.jpg IMG_1800.jpg IMG_1801.jpg IMG_1802.jpg IMG_1803.jpg

Hot DAMN if I didn't come close enough to at least rule out my being temporarily possessed by Carlos Hathcock! It was a 95 1X and I realize it looks like 11 shots, but one of my outer 9 ring shots pulled a pasty inward with it and exposed an existing hole.

Looks like my breath control didn't work so well to keep my rifle stock from getting all moist :/

IMG_1798.jpg eeeeewwwwwwww!

By the time I found 19 of my brass it was so dark I couldn't see the ground. I had to turn my truck around and drive down the hill a little to find the last piece (yes...I'm a brass rat, tried and true). All this ammo came from a fresh batch of 250 rounds of Nosler 168CC's loaded with 43gr of Varget with Winchester LR Primers in Remington Commercial once-fired brass I bought off Big-Al a couple years ago.

IMG_1797.jpg

I never could have imagined I would have shot so well in the light I was working with (I know I still have my eye sight for the most part and I don't need a pill to get a hard-on so I'm preaching to the choir)...but still felt this was deserving of a little celebration :D

56635237301__6015D1FD-6E02-46C8-96B3-D00292C97C72.JPG

I know I'm going to spend the rest of the winter chasing that score, but I'll have fun doing it! Plus...there's a few in the back corners of the safe that need some love too!

Anyone else with a WWI veteran want to try to beat my 92?

I know daekken has my M17 Eddystone now...

I will try to improve my 91s from Monday with the Eddystone before the contest runs out.

Very nice, I might steal that recipe (other than the cases) just for fun. I have a few Nosler CCs left.

Nice,
breathing is a key to some better groups. It will almost certainly help if you get a lot of vertical stringing. Plus if you take a nice deep breath between shots you keep the Oxygen flowing to your eyes.
The use of decent bullets helps also. Also don't be afraid to try different powder charges. Especially for 200 yards target work. I really don't have much time to go to range and test loads so I'm basically using what worked from a few years ago. My most worn out M1 will cycle hornady load data minimum charges in the garand section with out issue.
My garand I use cast loads in cycles on 34 grains just not always, maybe 1-2 rounds out of 16 or so.

I'm planning on giving it a try with my Winchester M1917...maybe I'll even give it a go with my 1918 SMLE once I drift my front sight over. My SMLE is a really good shooter but it hits a good 4-5 inches to the left at 100 yards. I've been meaning to get to the range so I can post some scores but life has been pretty busy lately...hopefully once I get past Christmas I'll have a bit more free time

Box-O-Fun:D

Doesn’t show well; it’s a near full 500 rounds of Remington .30 carbine.

Nice shooting'!!! Definitely a very accurate load. A bit on the light side and would not have expected that. Go figure!

If you get some time off during actual daylight we should go shooting between now and New Year's. Your range or mine.

If I can get back to some solid testing I will run some 155s on the light side with H4895. its a powder that works well in reduced loads and I was getting some decent results with the 1903a4 clone with some light loads. I have to run that A4 more often.

I wonder how many of us have vintage sniper rifles?

Nice. I'm not too proud to admit I collected the brass from when you let me shoot the carbine; I actually tumbled it last night so I have a small starter stash if I happen to acquire my own. I'd say it's 3rd or 4th on the unofficial "list."

I would absolutely be into that. The Sako M39 is coming up in the lineup soon too!

It warmed up to 44F, no breeze, but snow still on the ground. 1919/1931 RIA M03 Springfield. One of the 10 official “oddballs”. Rock Island was closed after WWI, and the machinery and parts stored. Some receivers were finished and serialed, some not. About 1926 the parts were shipped to Springfield and slipped into production. Mine at 424K is the second highest serial number known and was built in a August of 1931. Unserialed receivers have shown up as late as 1938, but generally at the 1.2-1.5 million mark. The rifle was rebuilt in 1940, B2 bolt and “s” semi-C stock

The very first shot was the “X”, then things went down hill. Had a hard time seeing the target today. Might have done better if I took the sight hood off.

So 90-1X and 90-0. HXP: 1-76, 3-77, 8-78, and 8-82.

A lot of nice shooting here! I was starting to take notes on who was doing what but I think I'll have to start an Excel sheet!

For the random drawing, anyone have a problem with me assigning a number for each entry, in order of receipt, then using random number generator to pick a winner?

I'm thinking a range trip with either the M39 or the new to me Mosin PU but with the scope covered of course. I think the sights are still visible the way the scope is mounted- it's in the safe and I'll have to check.

Took the 1943 Izhevsk 91/30 today. Was hoping to try some new loads and the opened up the PPU box and...d'oh, I grabbed factory.
Pretty nice day out, still just tiny bits of snow here and there.
Settled for a 78-0x. Shot higher than I recalled, maybe it's the difference between factory and my loads.
20181214_192222.jpg

Now to decide on M1, Lee-Enfield, or K98 for the next trip.

If using the "army" front hood that thing is tiny vs the USMC front hood?.
When I get a 1903 if it does not have the USMC m1903 "10" sight set up it will have it shortly after
.100" aperture .100" wide front sight and the taller larger hood. The hood does not do much in the way of aiding target shooting but I leave mine on the 03a3.

A lot of us aren’t even in the running for prizes, but maybe we should standardize where in our post we put the scores? Like top left in bold text or something like that?

I believe Mountain said this would be a drawing for a winner instead of by score this year.

Yep- random prize drawing, one entry per score submitted. Top scores for bragging rights.

Anything to make the scores easy to find is appreciated.

Once a decade ammo check and reorganization. That's 607 HXP loose rounds, 130 boxed, about 38 Swedish Mauser strippers for the M03, 16 enblocs (small cabinet) with 4 more in the big cabinet, and 900 sealed rounds in the basement makes a little under 2000 rounds of 30-06....wonder if that's enough to cause my Garand a hernia? Hope to get 5 years shooting out of it.

Does this make me one of "those people of interest"?

My hands are black from handling all the loose ammo....

In my reorganization, I found Swedish Mauser, Carcano, .308, .303 Brit, .38 short, Danish Krag, and American Krag ammo that I no longer have rifles for......100 or so 7.62 Nagant blanks...

trade for more useful stuff...(not .30-06!) 8mm, 9mm, .32, .38 special, .380....almost totally out of .45

Fixed all my posts to reflect score at top left
Is this the format we want to use? Bolded score at the beginning of each post with targets?
Or, at the end, for suspense? ;)
Just want to make it easier for Mountain.
Looks like snow on Monday, possibly. I might try to beat the dark on Friday, but being c.54° + rain, probably not for score.
