SOMERVILLE -- A woman who was taken for a psychiatric evaluation this morning is dead and three Somerville police officers were stabbed after responding to a domestic incident today, police and neighbors said.
Police said in a statement that officers arrived on Sycamore Terrace around 6:30 a.m.
"As a result of this response three officers were stabbed by suspect and sustained non-life threatening wounds,'' police said. "The suspect is deceased...There are no additional suspects being sought at this point in the investigation.''
Neighbors said the woman was in her mid 30s and that she was involved in a turbulent relationship with a man. The couple often argued and police were also often called to restore peace, neighbors said. They also said that the woman had a history of alcohol abuse.
"I feel horrible for her I really do,'' said neighbor Becky Felhazy, 3, who lives across the hall. "One day I helped find her cat.''
The woman's boyfriend told neighbors that he had taken her to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation around 3 a.m. today. She returned to the apartment complex and tried to start a fire, neighbors said they were told.
It was not immediately clear how the woman was released from the hospital or how she returned to the Sycamore Terrace building.
This morning, neighbors said, they were awoken by the sounds of shouted voices. The smoke alarm then began to sound – it is not clear yet if the woman actually started a fire -- and residents started leaving the building, fearing it was on fire.
Somerville firefighters responded to the smoke alarm this morning, neighbors said.
A law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the incident said the woman was barricaded inside a bathroom in an apartment when the stabbings occurred.
The source said the woman stabbed two of the officers when they tried to remove her and when the third officer was attacked his gun went off, fatally wounding the woman.
Somerville police said the three officers are now being treated at area hospitals. "These officers have been transported to area hospitals for treatment,'' police said.
Neighbors said that while the woman had her challenges, she was also a generally peaceful person and a decent neighbor.
One neighbor, who asked not to be identified by name because of the ongoing investigation, said they entered the building after the smoke alarm began sounding. Lying in the hallway, the neighbor said, was a bloody knife.
Another neighbor reported seeing an officer stumble out of the building bleeding from a wound to one of his hands.
The sudden outbreak of violence has left residents stunned and saddened.
"I am little shaken up someone got killed above me,'' said Kevin Donovan, who lives below the apartment where the violence took place. "She had problems in general.''
Somerville and State Police are investigating the incident, along with the office of Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr.
