Doesn't look like it was done by pushing it in a holster. I would try the soldering iron idea to warm it up and try to get it down flat.

Heat up a large flat screwdriver with a candle. Gently press the scar in with the flat of the blade applying pressure and heat where needed to seal the gash. Take your time and finish off with sandpaper to match texture.
