I have my g21sf suppressor project cooking along just fine, and now I would like to complete (read: start[laugh]) my AR project to have it completed by the time I see my grandfather again down in TN in the spring/early summer.

So far this is the upper that I would like to order.

14.5 1:7 twist M4 profile Carbine length gas system
DD low profile gas block
Omega X rail 12.0 FSP
Battlecomp 1.5

This is my first AR an I am intent on building it myself. I know it can be done cheaper, but quality is my priority. I have Troy battle sights and an Aimpoint PRO that will ride atop this setup.

1. Is this setup a good idea?
2. What would you change?

Id appreciate it if your replies contained some sort of format answering like
1.
2.

Just makes it easier to read[wink]

The rail you selected, Omega X rail 12.0 FSP

Is made to be used with a fixed front sight post. But you also list a DD low profile gas block. These are conflicting parts, do you understand what I am trying to point out? It would look like this

If you plan on using flip up front and rear sights, you will want to go with the low profile gas block, and the Omega X Rail 12.0 (Rifle). It will completely cover the gas block and look something like this

change the rail and go with a midlength gas system. I personally would go with at least a 12 in rail as you will benefit with the longer iron sight radius also I like to get a driving grip as far up as I can on a carbine the longer rail helps with this.

1. I like the DD barrel and the Battlecomp
2. I would go with a midlength gas system. I like them better than carbine. I also use Troy TRX rails because they are both lighter and cheaper than the DD rails.

The BFH barrels from Bravo Company are very well rated. You may also be able to find preconfigured upper from them that saves you a lot of time - for instance, I bought my upper from them and was able to get a pinned muzzle brake on it direct, which saved me a lot of time dicking around with that...

Since you're in NH why not go for an AAC Blackout FH... that way you can run a can down the road if you want.

Glad I asked! I didn't realize that I had selected the wrong rail. I will probably be ordering this thing in the next week or two. I'll shoot them an email and see if the can give me a realistic lead time on when I can expect this thing.

I appreciate the help guys.

What's the benefit of the midlength? I didn't think it would matter much.

Softer recoil, different gas impulse.... less wear and tear on the rifle.... better reliability.

It also has the side effect of making the rifle look less ghey if you are using a 16" barrel. (depending on the furniture/gas block in use).
