Girth is more important than length so .45 wins.
In all seriousness, I don't think there's any argument to be made in favor of 10mm over 9mm or .45 against human aggressors.

In all seriousness, I don't think there's any argument to be made in favor of 10mm over 9mm or .45 against human aggressors.
What do you have against the Shield .45? I never thought I would own one (polymer in a .45 was always painful to me, especially the Glocks). However, after an off-duty officer swore how good it was, I tried one. Wow! The recoil was very tolerable (especially compared to the Glocks I'd shot previously) and very accurate (free-state trigger, but it had a safety so it would probably be the same in MA).
That being said, I found the Glocks to be blocky/large for their capacity and unpleasant to shoot. YMMV.

I have 2 Shields. One has a safety and the other doesn't. I alternate so I don't beat the shit out of the gun but prefer no safety. They're reliable, very accurate and don't recoil badly for a small .45
