Anyone else having this issue? I bought 100 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 158gr GDHP for my 357 Magnum. As usual I took the ammo to a friends pistol range at his house to be sure the ammo fed and fired correctly, at the same time I try to capture them by shooting them into gallon milk jugs filled with water. Rounds were fired from a Taurus 627SS with 4" barrel.
Most the rounds I ever did this with were stopped in jugs 3 or 4. I had five lined up and it shot right out of them all. Since I was out of jugs I brought 8 with me the next weekend. Again I shot them and the round passed through all 8 and kept on going. Before the water drained I shot again and the next round passed through the 7 jugs left that still had water in them. My friend had some 55 gallon drums there and we found one that had filled up with rain water. We set that up and shot into that. The round went all the way to the bottom, poked a hole in the bottom of the plastic drum but remained in the drum. For another test case I fired a Federal HST 9mm from my Glock 19 into the drum also. Both rounds were recovered.
Pics of those 2 rounds, Gold Dot on the left, HST on the right:
Something is not right there. I spoke with Speer and they said the party line that "We don't test our rounds in water". Well of course you don't but they should still be expanding in it. The first tech I had on the phone even said that when he shoots them into water balloons it only takes 3-4 to stop the rounds and that they do expand.
I noticed a difference in the rounds when compared next to a Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel for 9mm. GDHP recovered from barrel on left, GDHP-SB on right in magazine:
Also here are some pics of other rounds I have recovered from water jugs:
If anyone else has this ammo, please test it and let me know your results. Oh one more pic of the ammo and lot#:
