Rifles at Dicks

Bought a Mossberg500 there once. It was on sale for a low price and it turned out that the box was marked wrong (even lower) so I got it for $220. However, the process took just shy of 3 hours with all the checking shit multiple times and no one knowing wtf they were doing. The sales guy had a short circuit because I wrote MA instead of Massachusetts in the residence box on the 4473.

hilariously i had almost an identical experience purchasing an identical firearm. standard 500? mine was the persuader.

If they have a sales associate wLk the gun out of the store in Ma, and does not have an LTC, isn't he breaking the law?

I've purchased a few rifles and shotguns from Dick's and never had an issue with the guys in Taunton. Besides the extra info they add in the their computer it's usually harmless. If you time it right with coupons you can get a pretty decent score in my experience too.

Have to agree, the perp walk outside to hand you your gun is actually pretty funny. You always get a few strange looks.

Bought a 10/22 two years ago in Worcester and it took about three hours. Go see Nick at the Leominster Dicks and he will take care of you. He knows his stuff and he got me out the door on Black Friday this year with 2 10/22's in no time at all.

I had a manager tell me they are not allowed to discount any firearms or accessories/ammo. I was like...ok...give me that box of clays. And he did.

Just think of it as them doing you a favor...who wants to carry out a 7pd ish rifle or shotgun anyways? Lol make them go all the way to the vehicle while they're there :p

The only two I've ever dealt with are Tom (young guy) and Ed (older guy). Both of them are awesome and will drop what they're doing to just to shoot the bull about hunting, targets, local news, etc. Not nitpicking, just curious to who it was, since I've only ever seen those two.

Young guy looked 21 maybe. I have not scene him since. Actually he said we need tougher laws in Massachusetts.
I told him he should transfer to the shoe department.

why are you buying so many 10/22's?
hahaha jk

Got halfway through the purchase process for a .22 there (years ago). I gave up. Submitting all my info to be put on file at the local PD (the stores local PD, not mine) outside of the normal checks is a deal breaker. No thanks.

That and the fact that they caved to the antis by suspending the sale of modern sporting rifles after sandy hook...i won't spend $1 there.

I've purchased a few long guns from Dick's. One some models their prices can't be beat. Other than one guy who didn't know how to do a special order, I didn't have any problems or hassle.

They do have some policies that you wont see in most gun stores. A manager will probably come buy to check over the paperwork, I'm sure this is just to make sure the clerk didn't screw up. They will probably carry it out to the front of the store for you, I can't see why anyone would see that as a hassle... I think it would be nice if someone carried my purchases outside every time.

For those that freak out when buying ammo when the cashier types something in after asking to see your FID: They are typing in your date of birth. Its doubt that its even saved. Its simply a policy put in place, a pop up window when ammo is scanned, that forces the cashier to ask to see your FID. Get over it, nobody cares how much ammo you buy, nobody is making a list of all the 22 you overpaid for.

That is RI law. All gunshops in RI do it
A person must complete a “Purchase of a Shotgun or Rifle Application Form” before any sale of a rifle or shotgun, whether through a licensed dealer or through a private party. The seller must conduct a background check on the potential purchaser through the local police or the superintendent of the State Police. One copy of the form is to be copy of the form is to be kept with the seller and retained for six years; a second copy is given to the law enforcement agency where the sale is taking place for the purposes of conducting the background check; and one copy is sent to the Attorney General. Upon the finding of no disqualifying information, the duplicate and triplicate copies of the form must be destroyed within seven days.

I've bought a lot of guns, i'm very familiar with the form you're referring to. I've never seen the extra docs they gave me. They had additional paperwork from their local PD (on the local PD letterhead) that had to be filled out and filed.

Department manager said that doc was to be kept on file at the local PD, which is totally different that the standard purchase form which is used for the BC then destroyed.

He did the BC separately.

My issue is they will not let you handle the firearm you buy. You touch & feel the demo unit on the rack, but can't field strip the one you buy. So when they hand it to you on the sidewalk, if it's defective, it goes back to the manufacturer for repairs (they ship it, sooner or later...). That was my experience with a shotgun that didn't rack out of the box when I checked it in my SUV after buying it. Quite the pisser to wait weeks for a functional firearm...

Oh - and my son (12yr old at the time) couldn't buy a airsoft handgun holster himself. I had to buy it. They don't sell toys to kids...only adults.

Maybe you look like a shady drug dealing thug.

I'm just kidding, please don't take offence.
H&R single shot rifles are known for having heavy sometimes gritty triggers, I was allowed to try the 2 that were instock and choose the one I felt was better. It happened to be the display model and I couldn't find a flaw on it so It came home with me
The Benelli I purchased came out of a sealed box, we fit the barrel and for-end and both fondled it before I left with it.

Danvers is hit and miss.
Never bought a gun there, ammo gloves, hunting stuff.
A couple of the guys are good and couple of pissers.
One young kid held me up for 20 minutes while he bullshitted on the phone with his girlfriend.
He kept holding up the finger like "Hang on".
At the 20 minute mark I held up a different finger and walked out.
There's another older guy who seems perpetually pissed at the world and will ignore you till you practically trip him.
The young hispanic guy is real helpful and seems to know his stuff.

I bought a Ruger 10-22 there. It took forever and after scratching the stock the salesman figured out how to put the factory lock on. I wouldn't buy from Dicks unless it was a super deal.

Is this wrong? I just bought these two about a month ago and I already have some.

When you guys are done with your 10/22s, can I have one for my 6 year old niece? She likes little toys that don't recoil.

I thought we were supposed to be boycotting Dick's because of their refusal to sell, " modern sporting
rifles"?
Being stuck in the past is one thing...forgetting is something else.
I'll pass on Dick's.

The Dick's in Portsmouth let me take down the shotgun I wanted before buying.

They are alright for 22 lrs and shotguns. Like everyone else said they can be a bit ridiculous with the paperwork.

It appears the consensus is that Dicks sucks except for the low prices.

Personally, I think they have to be given some credit for being one of the few "big box" chains in MA willing to navigate MA firearms sales laws so that they can continue to sell firearms, and cheaply at that. That's more than can be said for Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Sports Authority, etc.

I just think there's something to be said for keeping firearms sales in the mainstream...especially in a socialist republic like MA.

And yes, they've more than earned their rep for being ridiculous with the paperwork!

I bought a 10/22 from Dick's in Millbury. Took a hour and a half for the purchase. Every manager in the store had to get involved with it, because none of them knew what they were doing. A couple weeks after I bought the gun, I got a call from the store telling that I needed to come back because they messed something up on the paperwork. I told them I wasn't coming back, and the guy said something like, "ok we'll figure it out". Good luck to them.

Better off buying from a local shop.
