My computer has been bogging down lately. I'm running verizon DSL and have never had a problem with connection, speed, performance, etc. but lately I can't download images without it seeming like dial up. The Nintendo world series video that was posted a while ago, took me forever just to buffer it and watch the damned thing.
Getting custom maps from the auto download feature while playing Call of Duty is like pulling teeth. Even my in game ping has shot up 30 points, and anyone that plays PC games online knows the lower the ping, the better.
I ran AdAware anti-spyware, deleted temp internet files, cookies, etc. the usual computer clean up things, but still it feels like i'm towing an anchor.
Any ideas?

CTRL+ALT+DELETE

Look for un familiar programs runing in the backround, and close them.

Sorry if my spelling is like poop, not on my pc

whens the last time you defraged your hard drive?

I'm so proud of myself...I was actually going to ask that same question of him when I saw your post. [smile] Seems I'm not "blonde" all the time. [laugh]

I think your computer needs to be de-wormed, and you should stop allowing it to go to Mexico and eat all those nasty raw, unwashed fruits and vegetables.

+1 I still can't drink Tequilla

How much many mb of RAM do you have? How much space is left on your hard drive? Those can factor in on the speed as well.

+2, I can't drink Tequila, either.

When was the last time it was Rebooted? Makes a difference. Cleaning out old files helps free up space, too.

My daughter says "Real women don't drink Marguerita's, Real women drink their Tequila STRAIGHT". She means it.

If you are concerned about the line, check out these things.

You can do a speed test here

A more comprehensive series of test are here.

Do everything that people have posted, but you also you might want to check to see if it is a thermal problem. Get a monitor to measure the cpu and other chip temperatures. I know Pentiums will throttle back when they get hot. There are also other chips that can overheat if the sinks get loose. The northbridge or the video GPU.

Thanks for the replies, I plan on trying the ideas mentioned this weekend. If all else fails I can always take it shooting.
Its comon to see computer towers in the garbage bins where I shoot. Always wondered how so much pent up hatred towards a machine could lead to filling it full o' holes. [smile]

When I lived in L.A., our project team used to go out to lunch about once a week to talk over where we were and any problems that had come up or ideas that anybody had. We'd usualy hit one of two restaurants, one Szechuan, the other Mexican. At the Mexican restaurant, the drill always seemd to be the same. Everybody would order Margaritas until it got to me. I'd bitch about the salt and ice and order a shot of Herradura with a Dos Equis back. The division head, a woman in her mid 60's, would then go, "yeah, he's right", and switch her order. The rest of the afternoon we'd manage to get everything fixed and working well on the project, with most of the team sipping Margaritas, and the two of us throwing back boiler makers. [wink]

You mention running AdAware but are you running a good anti-virus program? It sounds like your computer is behaving the same way my old one did when it was taken over by spammers in Korea and turned into a spam robot spewing spam all over the internet - and you absolutely can't get rid of it without Format C, and even then it may not get rid of it, a low level format was the only way to try to save it. I tried everything and nothing would work, it got so bad I couldn't download anything that ended in .exe (software, stuff I knew was OK). The techie who came to my house to try to fix it said it wasn't worth it, the machine was an old Win98 first edition box, so we ended up getting a new computer.

Reinbeau is correct, you MUST have a good antivirus program and keep it updated at least weekly.

You should also run Microsoft Defender, an excellent free program that checks for spam/spyware, removes them and runs in the background to keep you from getting more. Get it here:

Unfortunately it may be my connection. I ran the test someone posted before and these are my results:

<<dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-04-15 16:35:53 EST:
367 / 128
Your download speed : 367 kbps or 45.9 KB/sec.
That is 72.6% worse than an average user on aol.com

Your upload speed : 128 kbps or 16 KB/sec.
That is 60% worse than an average user on aol.com>>

I'd like to just buy new hardware and rebuild the PC. The hard drive was redone with Windows XP last year, and I haven't upgraded anything since Medal of Honor Breakthrough came out and that was only some memory and a video card about 4 years ago. Running a demanding video game like Call of Duty 2 on here is like trying to tow a full size Ranger bass boat with an 84 Ford Escort with over 100,000 miles on it.
Unfortunately something like this finally breaks down AFTER you've spent the tax refund check on guns and ammo. [sad2]

Using AOL and an ancient computer, and comcast cable, my numbers are:

2178 / 332

Your download speed : 2178 kbps or 272.2 KB/sec.
That is 63.7% better than an average user on aol.com

Your upload speed : 332 kbps or 41.6 KB/sec.
That is 4% better than an average user on aol.com
