Questions about M1 Garand from a novice

Sales rep got back to me and said I'd need to submit a new notarized form 2a for the change of address. Definitely not doing that at this point. It will be much easier to notify fedex and have them hold it as others mentioned.

that thought had actually crossed my mind yesterday, I didn't think they'd just send it to another address that wasn't on the paperwork

Nope they won't. Easy enough to notify FedEx. Says my ammo shipped but no tracking number yet.

So let's just say you have recently acquired a CMP M1 Garand.

What would you do to recondition it without taking away from it's value?

Anyone recommend any websites to find parts, supplies, etc.

what did you acquire ? This could help a bit ? For the most part anything you do will most likely not increase value by leaps and bounds most anything. you would have to really do something aweful to decrease value in my mind anyway.

If you have a service grade M1 and you want to shoot it. 1. http://www.civilianmarksmanship.com/detailstrip.html 2. replace all the springs with something like this.http://www.m1garand.com/store/m1_garand_spring_kit.html
There are several parts sources including cmp. You can spend some money and time trying to make it "correct" for its receiver date ? wont hurt value much but might not get what you put into it back.

Springfield Armory service grade G3

The stock has a split on one side, I'd like to try to recondition it and see what it looks like. If not I'll need a stock.

Thanks for the reply and advice.
I have always wanted to acquire this service rifle for sentimental reasons.

So whenever my service grade shows up (hopefully this week, as the ammo will be here Wednesday) is it a must to replace these parts/springs you guys are talking about? I wanted to know if I'm good to go as soon as I clean and lube it.

do the detail strip and clean. I can give the specs for the springs. all but my 1955 HRA had op rod springs that where short/worn or broken....
Needed, no. Inspect and replace worn parts yes. Personally I feel all my garands sounded better mechanically and at least in my head a little more accuracy or consistency in the shot groups.
I think they are well deserved of a spring replacement

not a MUST but since you're detail stripping it anyway its a good idea to replace them so you know they're all new/good from the start

Clean, lube, shoot. Something breaks, replace it. No need to spend money on unnescessary parts.

This. I have never done anything except clean and grease mine. If I got the new wood I would put some linseed oil on it because the new CMP stocks only have one thin coat on them.

I've never replaced a spring and never had a problem. (I'm sure I will now because I opened my mouth)

My 43 springfield came with an op-rod spring that looked like new, so you might get lucky.
looks can be fine, need to measure length and to get real technical the set or distance between coils. If it functions then so be it.

this can be true.... although when I was shooting my M1s on a regular basis I needed to rebuild the bolts in the 2 guns I shot the most. One extractor broke the other firing pin. just think for the most part the parts in your M1 are 50yrs old or more?

This is why its easier to buy the spring kit and replace them all when you do your initial detail strip/clean/lube. Then you have a known quality of spring in every stage where one is used. Put the others aside for spares if needed someday.

Update

Detailed field strip is complete. Stock is stripped and refinished.
Operating spring is broken at its end, springs ordered.

The gas cylinder bluing pretty much is gone. So I'm contemplating a re-bluing. Is this a DYI job?

The gas cylinder is stainless steel so they take a special finish. It's this stuff.

I personally like the look of an in the white cylinder, especially if it it's on a "been there, done that" rifle. If I were to have one refinished I'd send it out to a specialist, but you're better off just purchasing a spare with a finish you like.

I've seen some refinishing kits out there, but I can't say how they look or stand up to operation over time.

You can get samples from Electrochemical Products Inc. I've used their Insta-blak 370 gel on stainless with good results. I also got a sample of Insta-blak 333 gel for carbon steel which works well.

Received my 2 hxp ammo cans today. Rifle has yet to ship though[angry] Hit estore on 9/3 and already have ammo, so rifle should be shipping next week I hope.

The rifles take longer to ship, although it's not nearly as long as it used t be.

By the way thanks for reminding me. My ammo arrived at my office almost two weeks ago. I've been traveling and need to go pick t up.

After the matches this year and the switch to Springfield from HRA, it looks like the times from hitting the store to shipping plummeted from 2-3 months to 1-2 weeks not sure how long that will last.
